"The school's best ally in the task of nurturing a student's innate 'urge to learn' is, first and foremost, the parents," saysBernie Poole. Parents play a pivotal role in building a positive mindset for learning in their children. We know that praising the process, childrens effort or strategies creates eagerness for challenges, persistence in the face of difficulty and improved performance. When you are talking with them about their learning, take the time to appreciate the effort they have put into their work, ask them about what strategies they used and value their choices, thinking processes or persistence. Children need to hear comments such as You worked hard to get that right!(effort), That was a good idea to tackle the hardest task while you were fresh!(strategy) and You recognised the first few steps were the most important but then after that you were right,(action). This type of praise, also known as encouragement, helps kids develop the belief that success has more to do with what they do than innate smarts and talents. Ask them about what didnt work, how they struggled and talk with them about how to use mistakes as an expected part of learning. Providing your child with honest feedback about their performance not only helps them improve, but also promotes a positive mindset. We often shy away from giving feedback for fear of harming self-esteem. Confidence can be maintained by being sensitive to how we provide feedback. For instance, focusing on two or three things kids do well before giving constructive feedback is one way you can keep young a learners head up while giving pointers about better performance. Building a strong partnership between the home and school is crucial if we are to encourage our students to be successful learners, citizens and people. At our last Assembly Nat Cook, local member for Fisher, presented our school with two new flags. Peter Dinan from Credit Union SA presented us with a cheque for $7000. I trust you all enjoyed a relaxing break with your children and they feel energised to start another term of engaging learning. We have a few new staff members for this term: Sharyn Darrell is deputy principal taking over from Karen Matthews

We are working very hard with our students to shift our mindsets and give everyone the best opportunity to make great progress and be successful. Our Mindset for Learning is being embedded across our school and to support and consolidate this even further we are introducing “Mindset Morning Tea” with Ms Russell every month. This is an opportunity to acknowledge those students who are consistently demonstrating our mindsets: Resilient, Responsible, Focussed, Reflective and Collaborative. ART GALLERY EXCURSION On Wednesday 26 July D1 and D6 went to the most amazing place ever, the Art Gallery in the city. First we got on the bus and got driven to the city. We had to walk about 5 minutes when we got to the entrance so we walked through the Fish Gate. Then we sat down to eat recess. After recess our class was split into two groups. Our guides showed us around the Ramsay Art Prize exhibition. We saw Forgiving Night for Day, eight TV screens singing, it was awesome. We Built This City was a huge tent made from salvaged smaller tents all sown together, all of us had a turn in it! Soon we went into a studio and sat down. After the guides showed us some photos about Gladys Reynell. Next we did a little warm-up by doing some sketching in our looking log. I copied the sheep painting. We also looked at some of Gladys Reynell’s paintings. Finally we did an activity by using movement lines and covering

them with geometric shapes. This was one way Gladys created her art work. My favourite part was copying the pictures because everyone got to have a go at being an artist. At first I was nervous about doing it but I just did it! By Hadley and Lachlan

Feedback…..What did we learn?..... I learnt that even though the tent wasn’t a picture it is still Art work. I also learnt that some artists paint their emotions. Mia I learnt about contract. You should keep trying until you get it. Art can help express your feelings. Hadley It took 4 years to create the huge quilt. The pottery tells different stories. Gladys signed her work with a G Elizabeth Gladys Reynell used geometric shapes in her movement art work Lyla Pottery can be your diary Jack

Hello Parents, Staff and Students, My name is Lambros, and I am currently studying my masters in social work at Flinders University. You will be seeing me around Reynella Primary School as this is where I am currently doing my placement for the following semester. I have a huge interest in personal development and mindfulness, and I enjoy working with people to help assist them to recognise their strength and figure out which solutions are available to them. I believe we can all learn so much from children and I look forward to using the following theories such as strength and solution based theory, empowerment theory and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help assist the students that may be suffering to reach their full potential with the time that I have here at Reynella. Please don’t hesitate to say hello or talk to me in the yard and I’ll try my best to answer any questions you may be having. Kind regards, Lambros.

Hello, I am Lina, a master of Social Work student at Flinders University. I am doing my first placement here to learn and practice. You probably will see me around for the rest of this semester, trying to connect what I have learnt and put theories into practice while hopefully making progress to assist people to make a little difference. I am quite interested in working with children and families with a focus on attachment theory and art therapy. I do believe parents are the first and best teachers for the children and arts have the magical power to heal wounds. Please feel free to come and say hello if you see me around in the yard make friends with me. Cheers, Lina
