Dubbo South Public School Respect, Care, Cooperation & Responsibility From Sharon’s Desk Schools are opening up Due to COVID restricons and physical distancing, many events have been put on hold. With great excitement we are able, with the approval of the Department of Educaon and the NSW Health Department, to now allow the following acvies: School assemblies for 15 minutes only (no parents) School choir and performing arts within school External providers to support students Students can aend other schools eg. debang Day field trips—Environmental Educaon Centres School photos Moving forward for the rest of the term—parents are not allowed onto the premises during the school day (we sll operate with parents/carers picking up from 3pm on school premises) and drop off in the mornings. All visitors must sign in through the front office and adhere to physical distancing and hygiene. I am looking forward to further relaxing of the restricons in Term 3. Thank you so much for your full support with the implementaon of these restricons etc across the COVID period. Please read aached paperwork on the new updates. Any concerns please contact me at school or your childs teacher. Its important that all students bring a water bole to school to curb the use of bubblers. The students can fill boles in classes throughout the day. This is a healthy pracse for our students to get used to. Road Safety is essenal around the perimeter of our school. We are surrounded by very busy roads—Fitzroy and Dalton Street. Please help us educate our children to use the crossings at all mes. Meet your children of an aſternoon in the school yard, or park and walk to the gates. DO NOT call your children across the busy roads, or walk diagonally across without using the crossing. Last week I witnessed a car stop at the crossing and children were asked by parent to walk onto the road in traffic to get in the car!! Nobody wants an accident. As adults please role model best pracces to your children. Tree Removal—we are blessed that we have so many wonderful trees on our premises which provide shade and shelter to our school. Sadly at mes some of the trees need to be both trimmed and removed depending upon their health. The trees are checked yearly by an arborist for professional advice. Over the last few weeks quite a few trees have been trimmed and some in fact removed; this is all in the safety for our students. We love trees, but we value our students lives more. I try and keep a happy balance—our school is looking good at the moment regarding trees and gardens. Aendance is important, everyday, especially coming out of the COVID period where the majority of students have not been able to aend school. Now, as we are slowly geng back to normality, the expectaon is that students aend school everyday unless they are sick. Do not send your children to school if they are sick. If your child is tested for COVID-19 you need to let myself or your childs class teacher know of when the test occurs and the outcome. Thank you for your support with this. Tree Removal—we are blessed that we have so many wonderful trees on our premises which provide shade and shelter to our school. Sadly at times some of the trees need to be both trimmed and removed depending upon their health. The trees are checked yearly by an arborist for professional advice. Teaching and Learning Tales Mr Timothy Cassell – 3C Learning, fun and Mr Cassell all go together. His high expectations and positive energy lift up everyone around him. Originally from Parkes, Mr Cassell said he “was always going to become a teacher.” His path to Dubbo South Public School in 2018 has been a varied one. Once he graduated from Charles Sturt University, Mr Cassell spent two years teaching in the Parkes community before he ventured abroad to work in England for a teaching supply company. “It was very interesting work and I enjoyed the corporate side of education,” he said. Mr Cassell then spent time in the midlands working with refugees whilst frequently visiting Europe. Mr Cassell has also worked in the United States of America for a Summer Camp Company. “I was the director of an Equestrian Camp. It was a great position because it combined my two loves – horse riding and education.” Closer to home, Mr Cassell has worked for a travelling show school which roamed from the top of Queensland down to Tasmania following the National Show circuit. “It was a fantastic opportunity to share my love of learning with children who trained and rode show horses or were on the road with their families businesses.” With so many fascinating and diverse experiences to draw on, Mr Cassell hit the ground running at Dubbo South Public School. Currently the Relieving Stage 2 Leader, Mr Cassell is not afraid of a challenge. “I am learning a lot about leadership and enjoying working with the amazing team of teachers in our school to improve student outcomes.” In the classroom Mr Cassell’s care for the students is fully displayed as he explains to them the value of understanding themselves as learners more clearly. The children listen intently to his explanations for why they need to reflect on where they are in their learning to drive their growth. “I am always learning and I am always trying to be better,” he said. The children are given clear instructions and support to plot where they are on learning progressions for numeracy place value, writing vocabulary and reading processes. Mr Cassell showers his students in positive feedback for their quiet work ethic and neat organisation. His words are met with big smiles. It is clear Mr Cassell is in his element in the classroom.

Student Voices: Will Baker, 8 years – “Mr Cassell is an energising teacher.” Campbell Edmunds, 9 years – “Mr Cassell is funny. He smiles a lot and lets me be creative with my journal writing.” Abby Taylor, 8 years – “Mr Cassell is fun. He has helped me with my subtraction, multiplication and division.” Ainslie Dunn, 8 years – “Mr Cassell is nice and I can remember things he has taught me.” Lilah Sutton, 8 years – “Mr Cassell is really happy all of the time which makes me happy.”

5/6C Questacon On Thursday the 4th of June 5/6C had lots of fun doing the Questacon activities and experiments via Zoom. We learnt how things float in salt water and in fresh water they sink. We used potatoes for our experiment to see what would happen and the potatoes sunk in the fresh water while in the salt water the potatoes floated because of the density in the salt particles mixed with the water, as water on its own has less density for things to float. We also enjoyed making rafts and boat, seeing if they floated and what they could hold, the boat floated better than the raft because the boat had edges and the raft was flat so when you placed an object on the raft, it would fill water in the edges and cause the raft to sink. Shona told 5/6C how liquids hold whatever shape they are contained in, and how some stack on top of each other. She used maple syrup, water and oil, we then saw how some things floated on different levels of the liquids, some floated on the syrup, and some floated on the oil. She studied in university for 5-6 years. Corey explained to us how in the ocean the salt mixes because of currents and tides, though in a cup or container with water that isn’t active. He also said how he was studying science in university for 3-4 years. This was a great opportunity for 5/6C to learn about how things float and how fun science really can be! The rest of Stage 3 will also be participating in Questacon zoom activities over the rest of the week. Lara Wykes and Nayte Ramien

Growth Mindset This week we are focussing on being thankful, and showing appreciation and gratitude. This week we are thinking about reasons to be thankful and grateful, such as having a good friend, having clean air to breath and rain to break the drought. We are encouraging an attitude of gratitude, where we think positively in a kind, loving and generous way.
