Fair Day
Wow! What a fantastic day. On behalf of all the teachers, staff and children I want to
congratulate and offer a huge THANK YOU to our wonderful parents for their
amazing work in bringing together this marvellous event. So much happens behind
the scenes in large ways and small and all contributions come together on the day to
create an atmosphere which beautifully represents the values of our school. I hope
the new format made the day less onerous and more enjoyable for everyone who
participated. The children spoke incredibly fondly today, during assembly, of their
experience on the weekend and they are genuinely proud of the efforts their Mums
and Dads who make it all come together.
The new format provides a learning experience between the old and what the future
has to offer. Notwithstanding this, it will always be the quality of the people behind
the processes that lead to successful outcomes and in that regard I believe we are
blessed with an outstanding community who can pull together at the right times for
the sake of their children.
Bell Shakespeare Visit
Last week we had a visit from the Bell Shakespeare Company. Friday’s performance
was a delight. Four highly talented actors performed an adaptation of ‘A Midsummer
Night’s Dream’ (Bottom’s Dream) which the children thoroughly enjoyed. There was
much hilarity and the children were greatly inspired by the professionalism of the
production and the skill of the actors. Our own budding thespians were greatly
intrigued by the stagecraft they witnessed and asked many interesting and relevant
questions at the end of the performance. In return the actors spoke highly of our
audience who were attentive, appreciative and responsive, not always the reaction
they get in different places. All in all a great treat for everyone.
Regards,
Brian Dodd
Principal

** BELL SHAKESPEARE **
Bell Shakespeare performed two shows for Classes 4, 5 & 6 last week,
declaring the children to be a wonderfully engaged and receptive audience. It
was such a treat to see the talent and stagecraft of 4 wonderful actors, who so
willingly shared their love of Shakespeare and their love of acting with our
children. The children asked great questions and in turn gained insights into
the world of acting and what it really takes to get to their level through study,
persistence and getting over the nerves. 2 out of the 4 actors were born in NT,
one right here in Alice Springs! Our children are beautifully inspired. Bring on
our play season!

** AUTUMN FAIR **
Thanks from the heart....
I wasn't at all certain on Saturday if we would be having a fair following the
tremor that rocked my bed in the early hours. I thought well even if we have to
operate out of a crater, in the oval, the show will go on. And indeed the show
did go on, thanks to the hard work you all did.
A few months ago, we started climbing with passion and love to organise the
school's biggest annual event and it has been a lot of fun. We will lose a
number of dear and valuable people this year that I have had the pleasure of
working along side over the last few years. Each year they give themselves and
more; You know who you are - Thank you!
We are so very much in the reflective phase and I am certain many of you have
brilliant ideas and suggestions to ensure its success for future years. So we
welcome those ideas and intend to create an appropriate forum for that
purpose. We need to hear from you, I already have a plethora of ideas of
how we could/would do it better.

I truly hope you all had a great day. It's by no means over, we will start planning
and processing to get it ready for next year. So please feel welcome to join in
with that. It is a golden opportunity to form rich and invaluable friendships. And
did I mention, it is a lot of fun!
Thanks a million to the parents, staff, governing board and friends of The Alice
Springs Steiner School for a wonderful day!
Kind regards
Zoe Fisher

** MUSIC **
Hi All,
I hope you’ve all had a great week.
The Fair
I hope everyone enjoyed the fair!! I was extremely impressed with all those students
who busked at the fair, you all sounded wonderful and added a lovely ambiance to
the fair!! Well done!!
Well done also to the Quintet, the two pieces you played sounded wonderful and I’m
sure everyone who listened to your performance enjoyed it!!! Well done!!
The Winter Festival
Our attention now turns to the Winter Festival, where the orchestra will again be
performing the second movement from Vivaldi’s Winter. The orchestra has already
started working on this piece and it is sounding good. I’m sure we can make the
performance this year just as good, if not better than last year.
Until next week,
Emma

HATS
Remember to bring your child’s hat we wear them all year.
ANGEL DOLLS
Please bring in your embroidered Angel doll. I have the stuffing and would like to
start sewing them up.
This week we started making felt necklaces. It was hard work. The needle had to be
pulled through the felt, then the felt had to be pulled along the wool. We were very
busy and we were able to maintain our concentration for quite a while.
Outside, we made grass and mud soup. It was lots of fun. First we cut the grass with
scissors. Then we put the grass it into the pot and using a large spoon we stirring the
soup. We had lots of fun discussing what could go into our soup and how to mix the
ingredients.
Have a good week,
Fran & Asta

** CASSIA ONE **
Dear Families,
The gentle breezes and chilly mornings in the last several weeks has livened us all.
Outside play has been a busy affair with sawing and sanding, digging great big
holes, making glue and constructing in mud play, gardening, swinging and climbing
the mulberry tree and lots and lots of running, playing games and having cuddles
with peanut the guinea pig. Inside play is a buzz with grinding nuts and stone,
playing with water in the kitchen, children snuggling into our dolly corner and playing
with dolls - undressing and dressing them. We’ve had children fishing and being
dogs, cooking, having foot baths, colouring in and craft. Always lots of construction
with blocks, cloths and play stands. Lots of scenes taking place in the River Corner
with cloths and props. We were lucky to have Jed and Eliza tell us about each scene
they built and Sonny and Alex tell as a Gnome Story. If children have set a scene
and would like to share their story with the class, I always support this by singing
“River Corner Story” and the children gather and sit around as the children say,
“Once upon a time….”
It’s very special and all the children enjoy listening to see how the story unfolds.
We had children working on their craft on Friday sitting outside around Edith basking
in the sunshine. Thank you Edith (Kaden’s Nanna) for rolling wool for the children’s
crafting projects.
In circle we have lots of movement, speech and singing. The children are enjoying
the challenge of utilising a bean bag around their bodies, over their heads, through
and around their legs, catching and throwing and balancing bean bags on their head
while walking, clapping, being on tippy toes and stomping. We’ve had Old Father
Yabby finding juicy toes, we’ve been jumping over stepping stones, listening to mice
tapping on our wee front door, playing peek a boo with a cheeky Bilby, looking
through our garden gate and waving to our friends upside down, lots of star jumps,
arms horizontal and vertical, pretending to be ants in ant hills and taking turns being
poor little ducks being stuck in the mud. These are great ques to ask your child about

their morning in circle. They have loved this circle, lots of challenges, balancing,
focus, singing, speech and lots of smiles and giggles. For me, a major work out!
A big thank you to all the families that bring in plants, flowers and things from nature
every week. The nature table and our dining table always looks lovely. We have a
few spots left, please put your name down.
One of the verses the children love saying:
There’s a mouse, there’s a mouse, and he comes to my house. (Tiny ‘m’ near
mouth)
He’s tap, tap, tapping at my wee front door. (Use two fingers to tap on palm of each
hand)
But when I finally open it, he isn’t there at all. (Look down and slide toes apart then
back together)
Please bring an Apple every Friday. We had several banana’s show up, we can’t
slinky banana’s, and I wish we could!
HIKE TOMORROW. Long pants and a hat.
Have a wonderful week.
Warmly,
Cherie and Neens
** CASSIA TWO **
• WHAT A LOVELY FAIR AND WHAT A GREAT LAWN SALE!
• THANK YOU TO ALL IN CASSIA AND OUR GREAT STALL
COORDINATORS.
• Snapshot of last week: Pax’s mum, brother, grandma and great grandma
came to school on Monday and Tuesday mornings. They are also Ngala’s
nanna and aunty. Together we went for a walk and picnic, picked eremophila
freelingii leaves (arrethe) on the hills and made bush medicine. We ground the
leaves and soaked them in nourishing oils. The next day we heated this and
added local beeswax. The room was filled with the astringent smell, well-
moisturized children and happy contented faces as we all enjoyed the
company of extended family, playing, eating, drawing and working together.
All the Cassia classrooms now have this lovely rubbing cream available to use
for sore muscles, minor abrasions and bruises. Thank you to our visitors!

We also took in the story of little red riding hood, painted rocks for the fair at
the instigation of the dear children who badly wanted to contribute too(!) , ate
our dried apples, and exercised our whole body at circle time doing tricky
things with beanbags.
Love from Susanne and Jemma

"This week there is no newsletter contribution for your class."
** CLASS ONE **
On Friday we had a visit from two beautiful Chilean ladies, what a treat we
had with Marionette and her sister Carol coming in to share some
language, fashion, culture and sweet treats to eat from Chile. We danced
two traditional dances, asked how to say lots of things in Spanish, some of
my favorite requests were: in Spanish, how do you say: Guineapig ? Can I
have a sandwich? You have a beautiful dress. Socks? Toes? Gracias
Marionette, Carol and Ammon.
Thank you also to all the class one families for helping on the class one
pancake fair stall! What a delicious success!
Blessings on our week,
Trudi

HARVESTING THE 'GORDS' TODAY
** CLASS FOUR **
What a wonderful time was had at the fair! The magic of this day for the
children is so apparent in their faces. Many, many thanks to all parents for
their hard work before and during the day. Thank you also to those who
brought along last year's building projects for the display.

I was so proud of the class and their performance of Banjo Patterson's
'Mulga Bill's Bicycle'. Such a long poem to memorize is no mean feat, and
to deliver it with such passion and enthusiasm was a real pleasure to see.
I was pleased with the delivery of the Apusky Dusky song too. The
children managed well with their various instruments and both melody and
harmony parts.
Back in the open classroom I was also very proud of the Class 4 display of
work. The paintings, crafts and bookwork were favourably commented on,
and interested people kept wandering in all day, asking questions.
In friendship
Katy
** CLASS FIVE **
Thank you all for your wonderful effort in making the fair happen! It was a
great day and the kids enjoyed themselves immensely. What a rich story
is being woven into their childhoods through the fair. Thanks to all who
helped with the bow and arrow making, stall set up- especially the Maze,
manning our stall and making the notorious juggling balls. A special
thanks needs to go out to Dustin and Adlin, Terry, John, Ben, Rohan and
Kathleen.
I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing bath or sleep after it all! I certainly
was horizontal for a while. Till next year- we are on curries!
Last week the children enjoyed two performances by the bell Shakespeare
company. They were completely outstanding and the children saw just
what you can do with so few props and great acting.
We begin our ancient Egypt main lesson this week which the children

have been so keen for. At the end of the week I will send home their
research project which will be due in the last week of school.
Have a lovely week!
Saludos,

** CLASS SIX **
A huge thank you and congratulations to all the wonderful Class 6 parents,
students, siblings and friends for such a successful fair. The curries were
delicious, the set up and pack up amazing, the cakes and baked goodies
scrumptious, and the welcoming committee were wonderful. In fact, I was
very proud of the way Class 6 took on the role of the welcoming
committee. They had a roster to fill and a job to do. Some students went
above and beyond expectations this year with extra shifts and
volunteering to help at other stalls and at pack up time. Thank you Class
6. I was also very proud of the children in their performance as I’m sure
you were too if you had a chance to see them.
To bring our Business Maths Main Lesson into the real world, Class 6
went to NTLINK last week. Libby Prell and her wonderful staff offered us a
great opportunity to crunch some real numbers and get a perspective of
what business really involves. With high-vis vests on, the children were in
the yard counting stock and doing the math, with numbers longer than
phone numbers! It was hands on learning at its best, and the children
were completely engaged. A huge thank you to Libby, Nicole and
Charlotte from NTLINK for all the preparation and time they gave us, as
well as the well-devoured morning tea they provided.
This week we will return to Ancient Rome to follow some of the triumphs of
Julius Caesar. It is timely to return to Rome as projects start coming in to
be presented to the class. Please help your child/ren tie up loose ends
and practice their presentations. Everyone has to present before Friday
week (June 3). If you would like to be with us for your child’s presentation
please email me to book a time.
I will be away with the Alice Springs Region U12 Boys soccer team in
week 9. Melissa Kerl will be with the class from Monday to Thursday, and I
will be back in time for the Inter-school Athletics Carnival on Friday June
10 (more info on this next week).
