P&C Update

Our Mums are SO Special! Sunday 12 May is Mothers’ Day. We would like to wish all

of our mums a very special day and we hope you are lav-

ished with gifts, hugs and a day filled with joy and happi-

ness. A special part of Mothers’ Day is the traditional giv-

ing of gifts that students purchase through school. Special

thanks to the P&C and Katie Gompertz and her team of

volunteers who coordinated this year’s Mothers’ Day stall

which was held yesterday. We hope all mums have a

wonderful Mothers’ Day, being spoilt by your children!

Opportunity Classes 2020 Applications are now open for Opportunity Class placements. Parents of students in

Year 4 are reminded that online applications opened 30 April and close on Friday 17

May. Late applications are not accepted. Opportunity classes are designed to cater for

the needs of students who are capable of working at an advanced level, well beyond

the scope of the regular classroom. The OC Placement Test will be held on Wednesday

31 July. If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class

entry in 2020, you need to apply now. Detailed instructions on how to apply online is

available. https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-

andopportunity-classes/year-5.

Cross Country Last Thursday we had our annual Cross Country carnival and it was an outstanding suc-

cess thanks to the excellent organisational skills of Mr Harpur, Mrs Donahue and Ms

Hayward. It was fantastic to see so many of our children striving to achieve their per-

sonal best. Congratulations to all of the age group winners, the children who have qual-

ified for the Zone PSSA carnival and to every student who just had a go on the day!

Huge thanks to all of the parents who helped the teachers set up on the day – you are

all champions! Well done everyone!

Teacher Training Our teachers work very hard each Wednesday afternoon after school participating in a

range of training programs to ensure they remain abreast with current thinking and

practice in education. They also participate in training on school development days.

This year the students last day of the school year will be Wednesday 18th December.

There are 2 scheduled training days for teachers on Thursday 19 December and Friday

20 December. However teachers have opted to reschedule our last training days to

after school sessions throughout the year, from 3pm to 6pm. We feel this is more effec-

tive as teachers can immediately plan and trial research based strategies within their

classrooms, rather than waiting for next year to implement these. The teachers will

attend school on the 19th December to finalise classes and communicate student pro-

gress to the next years teacher. This will assist in planning for student learning in 2020.

Building Works around the school As you are aware there is a lot of work that is being carried out around the school. This has had a huge impact on access to a number of areas. Structures have been put in place to support the school community. At this stage it appears the work will take 2-3 weeks to complete.

Wideview Choir Performances

Primary Choir have been working hard learning numerous songs to participate in the Sydney North Arts

Alive performance at the Sydney Opera House later this year. At assembly in week 3 Primary Choir will be

showcasing their talents by performing a set of these wonderful songs. Come along and enjoy!

Infants choir have gotten off to a great start this year! They are excited to perform their first song for 2019

at assembly in week 4 this term. I’m looking forward to seeing you there!

Baseball State Championships

We are proud of our students! It is always a pleasure to hear about the wonderful events and activities that students from our school our involved in. Jordan L and Christian M were selected in the Little League U10/11 Allstars Baseball team to compete in the State Champi-onships which took place over the school holidays. At this level of competition all games are extremely close and many results are reflective of the errors. The boy’s team was very competitive and were unlucky not to make an appearance in the final which was won by Cronulla 10-1 against Macarthur Orioles.

The boy’s team finished a fabulous 3rd in the State.

New Library Books – by request

Students across the whole school have been busily making contributions to the library book suggestion box.

Requested books are ordered if they can be located through our suppliers and are deemed suitable for the

library. Boxes of new books arrived late last term and have now been catalogued and covered and ready for

borrowing. As you can see from the photos there is a diverse selection of junior fiction, senior fiction and

nonfiction books to keep the children inspired.

Have a suggestion for a new library book? Visit the library and ask for a suggestion slip.

Chinese K-2

1 This year as an extra-curricular activity for K-2 we will be offering Chinese. Chinese will be held at second-

half lunch on Tuesday and Thursday in Mrs Shaw’s classroom.

2 Chinese will begin on Tuesday in Week 3 of Term 2 and students must be prepared to attend on a weekly

basis until the end of the year.

3 The focus of this extra-curricular activity will be celebrating our Chinese connections: 4 The Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia priority provides the opportunity for students to celebrate the social, cultural, political and economic links that connect Australia with Asia. This priority has been devel-oped around three key concepts: 5 Asia and its diversity

6 This concept highlights the diversity within and between the countries of the Asia region, from their cultures, societies and traditions through to their diverse environments and the effects of these on the lives of people.

Achievements and contributions of the people of Asia 1 This concept examines the past and continuing achievements of the peoples of Asia, identifies their contribution to world history and acknowledges the influences that the Asia region has on the world’s aesthetic and creative pursuits.

Asia-Australia engagement This concept is about the nature of past and ongoing links between Australia and Asia, and develops the knowledge, understanding and skills, which make it possible to engage actively and effectively with peoples of the Asia region (ACARA, 2011).

Mother’s Day Stall

As I am writing this our Mother’s Day Stall in in

action! Thanks to all our volunteers who gave

up an hour or more to help on the stall. Katie

Gomperz has done another amazing job at co-

ordinating, I particularly love how she sources

many products from small, local businesses.

Due to the renovation work happening around

the school the Mother’s Day stall has been on

the stage in the hall which has worked quite

well. Wishing you all a wonderful day on Sun-

day with the fabulous women in your life.
