The karanga has gone out and the taki has been laid before the new students, staff and whanau, at our beginning of year powhiri. The class of 2016 has commenced their transition into secondary and another exciting year for our Bay College Whanau is underway. It is great to be back. Our juniors are aboard, looking dashing in their new uniforms. Our school calendar is stacked with new academic, sporting and cultural opportunities. We are exceptionally proud of the 2015, Year 12 cohort who achieved an 89.7% pass rate in their NCEA Level 2. This is the highest pass rate achieved to date by Bay College and puts our college ahead of both the national and decile average. Year 12 Dean, Mr Prakash, acknowledges the efforts of the subject teachers, parents and students’ mentors from within the school and from Ngati Hine Health Trust, who collaborated with him to achieve this result. Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini. Unfortunately, this success did not extend to our Year 11 cohort and, whilst there was an increase in the Year 13 achievement, they are still trailing the national and decile average. Staff have reviewed the data, and plans to share best practice to address the needs of these two cohorts are in place. The Year 13’s final year began with a memorable camp at Lonsdale Park in Matauri Bay. The intention was to re-group, to plan, to set goals, to discuss time management, to enhance team spirit and to listen to motivational speakers sharing their life experiences and words of wisdom. This intense learning was balanced with challenging physical activities that pushed these students beyond their comfort zone. In 2013 a Community Liaison Group (Te Ropu Whakakotahi) was established as a forum for parents and caregivers to have a voice in what goes on in our school. Each year this group has provided valuable feedback and that has informed decision making by our Board of Trustees and Senior Leadership Team. The first meeting of this group was held last Wednesday 17 February. I am aware that not all parents would have received notice about this meeting but it was sent electronically via email and/or text and a notice was sent home with your child. Students were also asked to write a reminder in their homework notebooks. The focus for this meeting was the School Strategic Plan and Charter for 2016. I am currently seeking comments and feedback from our school community. A draft copy is available for your perusal at the front office or you may request an emailed copy. Noho ora mai koutou. Our annual Surf School took place last week, involving 16 Year 10-12 students. For most of these students the two-day

coaching experience with O’Neill Surf Academy built on the skills they first learned last year. In this way we hope to build a

team of enthusiastic, competent surfers who may be able to compete at the Scholastics competitions in the future. We had

two great days of surfing – the first in strong winds and rain at sheltered Matapouri Beach. Day 2 was under hot sun and light

winds at Woolley's Bay, a reward for our perseverance the day before. A great experience for all with all students up and

riding, and passing our coaches assessment.

ALL year 9—12 students must wear correct school uniform everyday.

We have new and used uniform items

available for purchase in the school shop.

We also have black canvas shoes

available for purchase ($10).

We want all students dressed correctly and

ready for learning. Therefore, if students

arrive in non-uniform clothing or footwear,

the College will have second-hand gear

they can use for the day or until they can

purchase the correct uniform item.

Parents, please help to ensure that your

child is dressed correctly for school and

learning.

Thank you for your assistance with this

matter.
