(L-r) U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) presented the Congressional Gold Medal to a Springfield, IL, member of the Montford Point Marines - Corporal DeLoyce McMurray, Teresa Haley, President Springfield Branch, and State Senator Andy Manar. The U.S. military was segregated from 1942-49 and Montford Point was the training site for African-American Marines. Last summer President Obama presented the Congressional Gold Medal to 300 surviving members of the Montford Point Marines. Corporal McMuarry was unable to attend due to health challenges. McMuarry joined the Marines in 1942 after graduating high school in Edwardsville, IL. In World War II Corporal McMuarry served in Guam, Wake Island, and Saipan and in the battle of Iwo Jima he helped evacuate wounded soldiers.
