TERRAFIL TECHNOLOGY FOR IRON REMOVAL

Terrafil filters are used for removal of sediments, suspended particles, iron & bacterial contamination in drinking water.

This Technology is developed by the Institute of Mineral and Materials Technology, Bhubaneswar ( CSIR) and transferred licence to our company for manufacturing the units both community & house hold units.

TERAFIL WATER FILTERS

The Terafil water filter is especially for those

areas where drinking water is drawn from

both surface & ground water sources like dug

wells, ponds, tube wells and rivers where

water is rich in sediments, suspended

particles, iron and microorganisms.

MAKING TERAFIL DISCS:

Terafil is a burnt red clay porous media produced from

mixture of red clay (silt clay), river sand and wood saw dust,

without using chemicals. The dough of the mixture of these

materials is sintered at high temperature in a low cost

coal/wood fired furnace to make the terracotta disc porous.

Sand particles form nuclei, over which clay particles get

embodied thus leaving pores in between them due to

burning of wood particles during the process of sintering

The dimensions of the disc :

Thickness - 50mm, diameter – 100 & 220 mm

AT OUR MANUFACTURING UNIT

PROCESS OF FILTRATION

Terafil is rigidly fixed at the bottom of the top

container and raw water is allowed to pass

through the Terafil disc.

All the sediments ,impurities, bacteria and

iron are left on the surface of the Terafil disc.

The clear & purified water is collected in

the bottom container.

EXTENT OF TREATMENT

About 99% of turbidity, 90-95% of micro-organisms, 90-95% of soluble iron, colourand bad odour are effectively removed from the raw water during filtration process through the Terafil.

100% bacteria can be removed when a pinch (0.01 gm) of bleaching powder is added to a liter of filtered water.

MAINTENANCE OF THE FILTERS

The iron, sediments and other impurities

gets precipitated on the surface of the disc

and clog the core of the disc which reduces

the efficiency of the filtration over a period of

time.

These impurities should be cleaned from to

time to increase the life of the disc and also

to get good filtration rate.

EFFICENCY OF FILTRATION

Average rate of filtration is 13ml/hour/unit

area (cm2 ) of top surface of the disc with

raw water having 50 NTU turbidity and 250

mm water head.

Rate of filtration is dependent upon turbidity

and pressure of raw water over the Terafil

disc

CLEANING OF THE FILTER

The top surface of the disc shall be cleaned

by scrubbing with a soft nylon or coir brush

or with water jet to remove the sediments

deposited on the discs and to open up the

clogged pores of the disc for rejuvenation of

the filtration process.
