Welcome Home When Tennessee hosts Western Kentucky on Tuesday, there

will be a familiar face in the opponent’s dugout as former Vol Matt Myers is in his first season as the Hilltoppers’ head coach after spending the previous four seasons as the team’s pitching coach. Myers pitched two seasons at Tennessee (1996-97), posting

a 13-4 career mark and helping the Volunteers to a pair of NCAA Regional appearances. The 1996 Tennessee team was one win shy of making the College World Series, the equivalent of being a Super Regional finalist. His .765 winning per-centage ranks fifth all-time at Tennessee. Also returning to Rocky Top is former Tennessee baseball media relations director Melissa Anderson. She

worked with the team during the 2009 campaign while earning her master’s degree in journalism. The St. Louis native previous earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management at UT in 2007.

Vols Earning Their Way On The Big Orange put its new-look “pressure” system on full display against Northern Illinois, outscoring the

Huskies, 24-8. UT was able to get runners on base consistently, getting at least one runner on in 22 of the 24 innings in which it came to bat, including a streak of 20 consecutive frames to end the weekend. Pacing the effort was new UT leadoff hitter junior Zach Luther who reached base to start an inning four

times in six chances. Also helping the effort was the team’s ability to earn free passes, walking 18 times and getting hit by pitches nine times.

any working member of the media following the game on the field at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Media are asked to conduct player interviews on the field, and media members are not permitted in the clubhouse area.

Interviews with visiting team members also may be done on the field, subject to the policy of the visiting team’s media relations representative.

YEAR-BY-YEAR COACHING RECORD

Following a nationwide search, Dave Serrano’s energy and passion for the University of Tennessee, combined with his impeccable track record of success made him the choice to become the 24th head coach of the Volunteer baseball program. A former UT assistant, he was welcomed back to the Big Orange fam-ily on June 15, 2011.

A veteran of seven College World Series and one of just 11 coaches to lead two different programs to Omaha, Serrano arrives at Rocky Top with a career record of 289-139-1 (.675) in seven seasons as a Division I head coach. After leading UC Irvine to the 2007 CWS in his third year at the helm of the Anteaters, he moved on to Cal State Fullerton where he averaged 43.75 wins per season in his four campaigns with the Titans, including an appearance in Omaha in 2009.

Serrano, 46, returns to the site of his first Division I job, as he served two seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee from 1995-96, following seven years at Cerritos Junior College. His first taste of Omaha came as a Volunteer, as he helped lead a Big Orange squad featuring all-time UT greats Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey to the College World Series for the first time in over four decades in 1995. During Serrano’s first stint in Knoxville, Tennessee posted an impressive 97-36 (.729) record, including a school-record 54 wins in 1995.

Serrano recently finished his fourth season as the head coach at Cal State Fullerton, where he earned Big West Coach of the Year honors for the second season in a row after leading the Titans to their 20th consecutive NCAA Tourna-ment appearance. He previously claimed Baseball America National Coach of the Year accolades after guiding UC Irvine to the first College World Series appearance in program history in 2007.

During his 17 seasons at the Division I level, Serrano has posted an impec-cable track record that includes continuous top 25 recruiting classes and 16 postseason bids. He has also tutored 161 draft picks, including seven first-round selections, dating back to the start of his coaching career at Cerritos College in 1988, a total of 23 of which have reached the Major League level.

Serrano graduated from Cerritos High School in 1982 and played two seasons at Cerritos College. In 1985, he went 12-1 and earned junior college All-American honors while helping the Falcons to a 39-5 record en route to the state championship. Serrano then pitched for Augie Garrido’s 1986 Cal State Fullerton squad, posting a 3-4 record with one save in 15 appearances.

In 2010, Serrano represented his country for the first time in his career, serv-ing as the pitching coach for Bill Kinneberg’s USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. He helped coach the team, which included Titan pupils Nick Ramirez and Noe Ramirez, to a V FISU Championship silver medal in Tokyo, Japan. Serrano has coached 19 players that have starred for USA Baseball National Teams, including Helton, Dickey and Augie Ojeda from Tennessee.

Serrano holds a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and University (2003) and was born on June 28, 1964, in Torrence, Calif. He and his wife, Tracy, have three sons, Kyle, Zachary and Parker.

Starting Pitchers Set the Tone In the opening weekend of play, Tennessee’s

three starting pitchers set the tone on the mound, throwing four shutout innings each. In those 12 scoreless frames, juniors Drew Steckenrider, Zack Godley and Nick Blount allowed just 11 hits and one walk while striking out five.

Steckenrider Named SEC POTW Junior Drew Steckenrider got the season off

to a scalding start, putting his enormous talent on display both offensively and on the mound in UT’s sweep over Northern Illinois en route to earning the first SEC Player of the Week honor of the season. Hitting out of the cleanup spot, the 6-5 switch-

hitting junior reached base 11 times in 14 plate ap-pearances, going 5-for-8 (.625) with a pair of dou-bles and his second career home run, in addition to walking four times, being hit by a pitch twice, steal-ing the first base of his career, scoring a team-high five runs and driving in two more. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native also served as the

team’s Opening Day starter, picking up the win after allowing just two hits and no runs and striking out two in his pre-determined four innings of work.

In Saturday’s doubleheader, Fritts had a com-bined seven RBIs, including a career high six in the first game of the day. His seven RBIs on the day marked exactly half of his entire total from the 2011 season.

Fellow outfielder senior Chris Pierce also had seven RBIs on the weekend, giving him three more than he had in 37 games last year.

Vols Unveil New Unis Tennessee unveiled a new set of uniforms de-

signed to create more of a traditional look for the Vols when they hit the field this season.

“It brings back a little bit of history to UT baseball and I think it gives us a sharp look,” Serrano said.

In addition to the team’s black batting practice top, Tennessee will also have separate orange and white tops with black piping and script Vols across the chest, as well as a traditional gray road uniform. The Big Orange will have their choice of plain white or pinstripe pants and will wear a black hat with an orange bill and an orange power T.

Vols Return to Houston College Classic Tennessee will make its third

appearance in the Houston Col-lege Classic when it makes the trek to the Lone Star State, March 2-4. The Vols will play Houston, Texas and Rice in the three-day competition held at the home of the Houston Astros, Minute Maid Park. The Vols previously partici-pated in the event in both 2005 and 2008.

All the New Faces In addition to an entirely new

coaching staff, the Vols have also welcomed a grand total of 18

newcomers to the squad as well. The revamped UT roster actually features more new players than re-turning (16). The group of first-year Vols is comprised of 13

true freshmen, four junior college players and one transfer from a four-year school. There are four out-fielders, five infielders, one catcher and eight pitch-ers, including six right-handers and two southpaws.

Vols Not Fazed by SEC Coaches Poll The Southeastern Conference released its annu-

al preseason coaches’ poll with Tennessee projected to finish sixth in the Eastern Division. While not the most ideal place to start the season, Serrano and his staff just see it as another opportunity and another challenge to overcome.

“We want to prove it on the field,” Serrano said. “You look at all the polls around the country, the Baseball America’s and all that, that’s someone’s opinion. The game is still played on the field. We get that opportunity 30 times in the SEC and 55 times over the course of the year. My approach and my coaching staff’s approach this year is every day that we suit up in a uniform, we get the opportunity to be the best team on the field that day.

Serrano to Coach USA Collegiate Na-tional Team Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano will don

the red, white and blue for the second time in his ca-reer this summer when he will serve as the manager of the 2012 Team USA Collegiate National Team. He previously served as the team’s pitching coach in 2010. The 2012 Collegiate National Team schedule

and the remainder of the coaching staff are cur-rently being finalized. An announcement will be made prior to the end of the year and details will be available on www.USABaseball.com. In 2011, the Collegiate team finished with an 11-2-1 record, and its season was highlighted by a 3-1-1 series win over Japan in the two counties’ bi-annual collegiate all-star friendship series.

Renovations Continue at Lindsey Nel-son Stadium Tennessee fans will notice a number of changes

to Lindsey Nelson Stadium when they return for the first time in 2012. The most noticeable will be the new black padded wall in the outfield designed to provide more protection for players and create a cleaner, more simple look. In conjunction, the bat-ter’s eye has been painted black as well. Another ad-dition at LNS is the new playground on top of the batting cages down the right-field line for young Vol fans to enjoy during the game.

Johnson Sets Example for Maddox Tennessee freshman second baseman Will Mad-

dox will look to follow the example set this fall by a fellow first-year Vol and Gainesville High School graduate, A.J. Johnson. Maddox’s former prep classmate was named a freshman All-American by five different publications, including the Football Writers Association of America, Yahoo! Sports, Phil Steele, The Sporting News and FoxSports, after racking up 80 tackles for the Vol football team as its starting weakside linebacker.

Woody Completes Second Tour in Italy For the second time in as many summers, Ten-

nessee baseball athletic trainer Jeff Wood traveled to Italy to assist in the Major League Baseball Acad-emy.

The 12-year Vol veteran ventured to Tierrenia on the country’s northwestern Mediterranean coast, near Pisa, where the Italian Olympic Training Center is located. The academy brought together promis-ing European and, in some cases, African baseball players, ages 15-19, for the best in U.S. major league coaching and instruction.
