¢ Tennessee (6-3) outrebounded Presbyterian (2-9), 42-22. The Vols had just six turnovers, the fewest in the Cuonzo martin era.

¢ reigning SEC Player of the week Trae Golden scored 16 points and dished out a season-high eight assists without a turnover. Jordan McRae (12), Skylar McBee (12) and D’Montre Edwards (career-high 11) also scored in double figures.

¢ mcrae, who had been challenged by martin be-fore the game to make an impact on the boards, tied a career-high with eight rebounds.

¢ UT took a 43-13 lead into the break. PC’s 13 points were the fewest Tennessee has allowed in a half all season and the fewest allowed in a first half since leading Georgia at halftime, 35-13, en route to a 77-48 victory on feb. 4, 1998.

¢ Three players scored in double figures for Pres-byterian, led by Khalid Mutakibbir’s 18 points.

GUArDS GoING To THE GLASS¢ Point guard Trae Golden is averaging a career-

best 3.7 rebounds per game, and his season re-bounding total stands at 33 through nine games.

¢ Jordan McRae is coming off a career-high-tying eight-rebound effort vs. Presbyterian and is averaging 3.0 rpg.

¢ Josh Richardson is UT’s top perimeter re-bounder, ranking third on the team with 4.9 rpg.

¢ In total, Tennessee’s regular perimeter starters — Golden, richardson and senior Skylar McBee (1.1 rpg) — combine to account for 9.7 rpg.

frEE THrowS fINALLy fALLING¢ During UT’s two-game road losing skid at

Georgetown and Virginia early this month, the Vols shot 42.1 percent from the free-throw line as a team (8-for-19).

¢ But in the two games since (both home wins), UT is shooting 80.8 percent at the foul line (42-for-52).

VoLS HELD foUr STrAIGHT UNDEr 60¢ from Nov. 26 through Dec. 13, Tennessee held

four straight opponents to 60 points or less, ty-ing for the program’s longest such streak in the shot-clock era.

¢ The Vols’ streak came against: oakland (50), No. 20 Georgetown (37), Virginia (46) and No. 23 wichita State (60). UT went 2-2 during that stretch, while its opponents averaged 48.3 ppg.

¢ In 1995-96, UT went 3-1 during a similar four-game streak, and the Big orange also put to-gether a four-game streak in 1985-86 while go-ing 4-0.

ComPArING UT’s wINS & LoSSES¢ The starkest statistical differences between UT’s

wins and losses are found in the team’s scoring, shooting percentages and rebound margin.

EmPHASIS of THE DAy¢ Prior to every Tennessee practice, Cuonzo

Martin gathers the Vols at midcourt and discusses the “Emphasis of the Day.”¢ The Emphasis of the Day rarely focuses on

basketball-specific skills or strategy, as martin typically uses it as a vehicle for character building and personal development. As such, it has become something that the members of the team look forward to each day.¢ martin typically begins by reading that day’s

“emphasis” aloud. He then asks one or two players to read it aloud before opening a team-wide discussion during which different team members are asked to interpret the meaning in their own words.¢ “Everyday when coach gives the guys the

emphasis of the day, it’s something that really makes them think and become closer as a team,” associate head coach Tracy webster said. “A lot of times, the things that he says really hit home with the guys. It can be about family life, it can be a scripture, it can be a quote from someone, but it’s all geared around ̀ team.’¢ Added webster: “If the guys are having a hard

time understanding the message, he breaks it down for them and makes sure that they do. It’s kind of like prayer before a meal. It’s to help you get off to a good start.¢ A few examples: my desire is that the people who know me the

best respect me the most. Success is not measured by how many people I coach or how many games I win; success is living life with such authentic integrity that those who know me best actually respect me the most. when someone does well, we all do well. when

someone makes a mistake, we all make the mistake. Let’s figure out the best way to constructively help each other. when we are reliable, others know that they can

depend on us. They know that we will make the effort to do our best, whatever the situation might be. They know we won’t run, cower or become paralyzed by fear.

VoLS PUT ToGETHEr HISTorICDEfENSIVE EfforT AT GEorGETowN¢ Tennessee fell at No. 20 Georgetown 37-36 Nov.

30 in the SEC/Big East Challenge. It was a game that was noteworthy for several reasons.

¢ The game was the lowest combined score in a UT game since the Vols' 11-6 win over Temple on Dec. 15, 1973. That was the last time the Vols held a Division I opponent to as few as 37 points.

¢ UT’s 37 points surredered also marked the pro-gram’s best defensive scoring effort since hold-ing ohio Northern to 33 points in a 40-33 win on Nov. 25, 1983.

¢ The Vols held Georgetown scoreless for the final 4:09 in regulation. The Hoyas were held without a field goal for the final 10:17 of the first half.

SIXTH mAN SPArKPLUG¢ Just as he did during the second half of last sea-

son, junior wing Jordan McRae provided an of-fensive boost off the bench through eight games for Tennessee before starting for the first time this season Tuesday vs. Presbyterian.

¢ mcrae ranks third on the team with 10.1 points per game, and he is shooting a team-best .375 (12-for-32) from 3-point range.

¢ The midway, Ga., native came off the bench to score in double figures in six of UT’s last 14 games last season.

ProDUCTIoN INCrEASE for J-rICH¢ After averaging 2.9 points per game as a true

freshman last year, guard Josh Richardson is av-eraging 6.3 ppg through UT’s first nine games.

¢ Now a starter on the wing, richardson had 11 points and nine rebounds in the win over Umass.

STArTING SHorTHANDED¢ The Vols have begun the season with three

members of its 15-man roster sidelined by inju-ries. most notably, senior forward Jeronne May-mon, a second-team All-SEC performer and UT’s second-leading scorer last season, is out with a knee injury.

¢ fellow senior forward Dwight Miller also is still rehabbing following offseason knee surgery.¢ freshman guard Derek Reese had surgery in

August to address a labral tear. He started taking part in limited practice drills when the team was in Puerto rico in mid-November.

Travon (pronounced: tray-VAHN) Landry, A.J. Da-vis and Robert Hubbs III all signed National Let-ters of Intent to attend UT and play for the Volun-teers beginning with the 2013-14 season.¢ Landry is a 6-0 point guard originally from San

Antonio, Texas, who currently starts for the pow-erhouse program at Huntington St. Joseph Prep in Huntington, w.Va.

¢ Davis is a 6-8 guard/forward from Buford, Ga., and is the son of 13-year NBA veteran and 2001 NBA All-Star Antonio Davis.

LEAGUE mEDIA PICKS VoLS foUrTH¢ A preseason poll of SEC and national media

members projected Tennessee to finish fourth in the 14-team SEC this season.

¢ The Vols were picked to finish 11th in last year’s preseason media poll (the league had 12 teams), but went 10-6 to finish second in the final stand-ings in Cuonzo martin’s first season at UT.

¢ Twenty years ago, Allan Houston captured the 1993 SEC scoring title (22.3 ppg) – and he also broke Ernie Grunfeld’s school scoring record.

¢ And Ron Slay was the league’s scoring cham-pion 10 years ago, averaging 21.2 ppg in 2003.

Martin has never been whistled for a technical foul.

20 = 100 for mArTIN¢ If Tennessee reaches the 20-win mark this sea-

¢ martin entered this season with an 80-56 record in four previous seasons as a head coach (three at missouri State, one at Tennessee).

@Cuonzomartin on Twitter¢ Vols head coach Cuonzo martin is very active on

BIG orANGE GLoBETroTTErS¢ In the one-year period spanning from Nov. 19,

2011, to Nov. 19, 2012, the Vols have 10 days in Italy and close to a week in both maui and Puerto rico.

VoLS IN THE NBA¢ former Vol Tobias Harris (2011) is in his second

season with the milwaukee Bucks. Through the Bucks’ first 14 contests — each of which Harris has started — he averaged 7.6 points and 3.2 re-bounds per game.

¢ Veteran NBA point guard C.J. Watson (2003-06) entered his sixth NBA season with a new team: the Brooklyn Nets. Through his first five seasons, watson averaged 7.8 points and 2.6 as-sists per game.

¢ Vol legends Ernie Grunfeld (1974-77) and Allan Houston (1990-93) each hold NBA front-office titles. Grunfeld is in his 10th year as president of the washington wizards, and Houston is the as-sistant general manager of the New york Knicks.

80 = TIPPING PoINT¢ In five seasons as a head coach, Cuonzo Mar-

tin’s teams are 16-2 when they score at least 80 points. That’s not surprising given the emphasis martin places on unrelenting defensive pressure, tenacity and technique.

UP NEXT: XAVIEr¢ Tennessee continues its six-game homestand

and plays its final game of 2012 on Dec. 29 when it hosts Xavier at Thompson-Boling Arena (6 p.m. ET, ESPNU).

¢ The Vols lead the all-time series with Xavier 10-4, dating to 1936.

Cuonzo martin took the Tennessee basketball team on a 10-day, four-game exhibition tour of Italy Aug. 5-15. The tour began in rome and progressed north through florence, Pisa and The republic of San marino before concluding in Como.

The Volunteers plowed through each of their four exhibi-tion opponents en route to a perfect 4-0 record. The com-petition included All-Star Italy (a collection of Italian profes-sional players), the Lithuanian second-division champion BC Atletas, BC Zeta Golubovci from montenegro and Amici del Campetto.

BC Atletas provided the biggest test for Tennessee — the Lithuanian pros defeated Georgia just days before facing the Vols. Atletas also added a victory over Purdue two days after playing UT. Tennessee handed BC Atletas an 82-68 defeat in what would prove to be the Vols’ lowest-scoring game of the tour.

In total, the Big orange boasted an average margin of vic-tory of 49.3 points in its four outings. Twice, in a display of sportsmanship, the Vols requested a running clock during the second half.

In an effort to make the trip an educational opportunity for a team with numerous players who had never traveled abroad, martin called upon UT professor Dr. Robert Bast, who crafted a three-credit course (History 491) appropriately named “renaissance men.” The class met for several on-cam-pus lectures before the trip, preparing the student-athletes for the culture, cities and landmarks they would encounter once they stepped foot on Italian soil.

Highlights of the trip included visits to the roman Colosseum, the ruins of the roman forum, Vati-can City — including St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel — michelangelo’s famous sculpture of David in florence, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the three towers of San marino and a cruise on Lake Como (the first-ever boat ride for four team members).

The $19 million first phase of renovations in-cluded the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities.

The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball prac-tice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an ath-letic training room, weight room and film-study room.

The athletic department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs.

And new to Thompson-Boling Arena last year was the 360-degree LED ribbon board that runs along the bottom of the upper deck.

It’s so much MORE than justwinning ballgames.

DEVELoPING wELL-roUNDED yoUNG mEN¢ Cuonzo Martin is genuinely just as passionate about the development of his players

off the court as he is about their athletic development. As such, he relies on Marco Harris, the basketball team’s student-athlete welfare coordinator, to conduct year-round seminars that educate the team on topics that will benefit them later in life.

¢ Harris was a two-sport athlete in college (basketball and baseball), and he also is a successful private business owner, operating a pair of Subway franchises.

¢ Harris regularly schedules guest speakers and team seminars focused on topics such as “Dressing for Success,” AIDS awareness, credit score education, how to keep a budget, balance a checkbook and more.

¢ Harris also oversees the team’s community outreach efforts. The team has visited patients at UT medical Center and St. Jude’s Children’s research Hospital and also has assisted with Habitat for Humanity building projects (2011 and 2012), race for the Cure and several other events.

PErSoNAL BrANDING THroUGH SoCIAL mEDIA¢ rather than banning his players from using various social media services, Cuonzo Martin believes in educating them on how to effec-tively use social media as a positive personal branding tool.

mEN’S HooPS HAS woN foUr of UT’sLAST SIX CommUNITy SErVICE AwArDS¢ The Tennessee men’s basketball team has won four of the last six men’s Community Service Team of the year Awards, presented annu-ally at the “Volscars” ceremony.¢ The Volscars (wordplay on “oscars”) is UT’s annual year-end ath-letic awards show.

“Eventually this ball will stop bouncing. So I’ve got to help you find your way in life. And I want you to walk with your head held high and your chest out because you’re a man.” - Cuonzo martin

Blue collar. Smothering defense and imposing physicality are among the mantras accompanying the dawn of the martin Era on rocky Top. However, as his previous teams have proven, those principles do not prohibit the prevalance of a powerful offensive attack. Discipline and effort will lead to productivity on both ends.
