Noting BaylorTidbits

The Lady Bears are led by a trio of double-digit scorers as junior post Brittney Griner leads the team with 24.4 points per game while sophomore guard Odyssey Sims tosses in 18.8 per contest and junior forward/post Destiny Williams chips in 13.0 an out-ing.

Griner and Williams are the team’s top rebounders at 11.8 and 8.2 boards per game, respectively.

Today’s game marks Baylor’s fi rst time on the road this season after fi ve consecutive home games to open the 2011-12 campaign.

Our Last Meeting with Baylor Number six-ranked Tennessee was held to a pro-

gram-low 25.0 percent shooting from the fi eld, as No. 2/3-ranked Baylor slugged out a 65-54 victory in front of a sold-out crowd at the Ferrell Center in Waco on Dec. 14, 2010.

Despite making just 18-of-72 shot attempts, the Lady Vols were within nine points of the Lady Bears until the last minute of the game thanks to a 53-43 edge on the boards.

The Lady Vols dominated the glass, but could not contain Baylor’s sophomore star Brittney Griner who scored 16 points, grabbed fi ve boards and tal-lied six blocks by halftime.

Baylor led 23-21 before going on an 11-0 run to end the fi rst half and held the Lady Vols without a fi eld goal the fi nal 5:23 of the fi rst stanza to take a 34-21 lead.

After intermission, UT came out scored the fi rst six points of the half on a Glory Johnson free throw, a layup by freshman Meighan Simmons and a trey by Simmons.

UT’s last ditch eff ort came when Simmons was fouled twice while attempting threes in the last two minutes. She made all six free throws to cut Baylor’s lead to 62-53.

However, the Lady Vols didn’t hit another fi eld goal the rest of the way.

Simmons scored 22 points on 6-of-21 shooting, while senior Angie Bjorklund was the only other Lady Vol to reach double fi gures, scoring 10.

Junior Shekinna Stricklen had 11 boards, but shot 1-of-9 from the fi eld and committed six turnovers.

Tennessee’s 25 percent fi eld goal shooting night against Baylor on Dec. 14, 2010, was the lowest in school history.

The horrendous 18-72 shooting display eclipsed the previous all-time school record low of 27 per-cent (17-63) against North Carolina in the 2007 NCAA Final Four semifi nals on April 1, 2007.

In almost 1,300 games coached by Pat Summitt, her teams have dipped under 30 percent shooting just six times and fi ve of those times have occurred in the last seven years. In addition to the Baylor and North Carolina low marks, UT shot .278 vs. Rutgers (12-29-04), .280 vs. Duke (12-2-04), .286 at Minne-sota (12-4-83) and .296 against Rutgers (2-11-08).

The 4-1-1 on Baylor In the last outing for Baylor before facing Tennes-

see, Brittney Griner had 31 points and 10 rebounds, as the Lady Bears rolled to a 109-59 victory over Yale on Nov. 22.

Sophomore point guard Odyssey Sims had 13 points and 13 assists against Yale for her fi rst career double-double, along with seven steals with only two turnovers in 25 minutes. Brooklyn Pope had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Baylor, while Destiny Williams fi nished with 13 points.

She Knows the Big Orange As a player and assistant coach at Louisiana Tech,

Kim Mulkey faced the Lady Vols a total of 28 times. As a star point guard for the Lady Techsters, Mulkey played Tennessee six times, going a perfect 6-0 from 1980-84.

In 15 seasons as Leon Barmore’s top assistant at her alma mater, she had a record of 8-14 against UT.

In the postseason, Mulkey was 2-0 against Ten-nessee winning the AIAW National Championship game in 1981 and a National Semifi nal in the inau-gural NCAA Women’s Tournament in 1982.

From the assistant coach’s seat, Mulkey was 2-2 against UT in the postseason and is 1-1 as the Baylor Head Coach in NCAA play and 2-2 overall against the Lady Vols.

Sharing Some History When Pat Summitt was the head coach of the 1984

USA Olympic Team, her point guards were a pair of 5’4” fi reballs... UT’s Lea Henry and Louisiana Tech’s Kim Mulkey. The 1984 team captured the gold medal and was the fi rst USA women’s hoops team to bring home Olympic gold.

Summer Fun Lady Vol seniors Glory Johnson and Shekinna

Stricklen were gold medal teammates with Baylor’s Odyssey Sims this summer at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China.

The Series with Baylor

This will mark the fi fth meeting between the Lady Vols and Lady Bears and the second time on the UT campus. Last season, the two sides met in Waco for the fi rst time as Baylor won 65-54 in front of a sold out crowd.

The last meeting in Knoxville was the season-opener on Nov. 15, 2009, in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic (a 74-65 UT win). Lady Vol Shekinna Stricklen’s double-double of 25 points and 14 re-bounds in 40 minutes led UT to the victory.

A Hall of Fame Matchup

Tennessee has three Hall of Famers on its Lady Vol basketball staff .

Head Coach Pat Summitt was a member of the inaugural class in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999 and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000. Lady Vol assistant Holly Warlick was enshrined into the Women’s Hall of Fame with the Class of 2001 and Lady Vol Director of Character Development Daedra Charles-Furlow was enshrined in 2007.

Lady Bear Head Coach Kim Mulkey was a 2000 inductee into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. As a player at Louisiana Tech from 1980-84, Mulkey helped lead the Lady Techsters to the Final Four each of those years-- La. Tech won an AIAW national championship in 1981 and the fi rst NCAA national title in 1982 -- both after beating Tennessee.

Versus the BIG 12

The Lady Vols have faced 11 of the 12 current members of the Big 12 Conference, with the only exception being Iowa State. UT has a 49-16 record all-time.

That Full Circle Thing

Both Tennessee’s Pat Summitt and Baylor’s Kim Mulkey will tell you its family fi rst, and basketball second. Or in their case, family and basketball are conjoined.

Summitt’s son Tyler is a redshirt sophomore in his second year with the Tennessee men’s team after spending his freshman year with his mother as a Lady Vol practice player.

Makenzie Robertson is a 5-10 sophomore guard who plays for her mother as a Baylor Lady Bear.

Both Tyler and Makenzie wear uniform number 14 for their respective teams -- Summitt wears 14 because it was his mother’s 1976 Olympic jersey number.

Head Coach Pat SummittWe Back Pat

The Tennessee men’s and women’s basketball teams will host a pair of games to support Coach Pat Summitt after her announcement of early on-set dementia, Alzheimer’s Type in late August.

To coincide with National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month the matchup between the No. 6/7 Lady Vols and the No. 1 Baylor Lady Bears on Sun., Nov. 27th at 2 p.m. (ESPN) has been desig-nated as the fi rst of two, “We Back Pat” games.

Then in January, when Coach Cuonzo Martin and the Vols take on the Connecticut Huskies on Janu-ary 21st (CBS) additional eff orts will take place in conjunction with the campaign.

Fans attending the games are asked to wear the offi cial “We Back Pat” T-shirt. Shirts are available at The UT Bookstore and Stokely Athletics Center stores, as well as area Food City and Walgreens. The shirts are $10, with $4.25 from every shirt go-ing to research.

In a halftime ceremony at the Baylor game, checks will be presented to Alzheimer’s Tennessee and UT Medical Center, as the `We Back Pat’ T-shirts have already generated more than $150,000 in donations. The proceeds will help directly impact those living with the disease in the state of Ten-nessee.

Announcing the Foundation Since sharing her diagnosis of dementia in late

August, Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt has indicat-ed she would like to start a foundation. An an-nouncement will be forthcoming on Sunday at the Baylor game.

Summitt Receives Courage Award The United States Sports Academy presented

Lady Vol Coach Pat Summitt its “Courage” award at the Pepperdine game on Nov. 13.

Trustee emeritus of the USSA, Gene Policinski, was on hand in Knoxville to give Summitt one of the organization’s most prestigious honors -- the Mildred “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias Courage Award.

Citing that, Summitt, the seemingly unbeatable coach, has dementia and she vows to fi ght it, raise awareness and keep on coaching.

The Courage Award is presented annually to an individual who demonstrates courageous action in overcoming adversity to excel in sport. This individual should exhibit the qualities of cour-age, perseverance, grace, and strength in sport achievement.

Zaharias’ spirit and zest for life, as well as her cour-age, strength, and achievement, are the qualities for which this award is named. The Babe’s fi ght to overcome life-threatening cancer and then return to the winner’s circle in women’s profes-sional golf has withstood the test of time.

Ranking WorldWhen Playing Number One Tennessee is 14-28 all-time when playing the na-

tion’s number one ranked team. The Lady Vols are 3-9 in Knoxville, an even 6-6 on the road and 5-13 on neutral courts.

UT is currently ranked number six in the AP poll. Tennessee is 0-3 when trying to upset #1 from that position.

UT is currently ranked number seven in the USA Today/ESPN poll. Tennessee is 0-1 when trying to upset #1 from that position.

The Numbers Game The last time Tennessee played the nation’s num-

ber one-ranked team was on Jan. 22, 2007 in Knoxville. The Lady Vols missed charity tosses

down the stretch to lose 74-70 to top-ranked Duke after mounting a furious comeback rally.

The Blue Devils opened the game with a night-marish 19-0 run-out, as the Lady Vols fell into a 21-point hole (28-7 at 9:23 in the fi rst half ) before rallying to narrow the halftime defi cit to 11 points (38-27).

Free throw defense stymied Tennessee, as the Lady Vols connected on just 8-17 (.471) for the game. All-American Candace Parker managed just 1-7 from the free throw line.

From the Chalk BoardControl the Glass Tennessee has managed to outrebound Baylor in

three of the four all-time meetings. In 2004, Baylor grabbed one more board than UT,

38-37. Since Brittney Griner has been the Lady Bears

mainstay in the paint, UT has managed to out-rebound BU 42-39 (on Nov. 15, 2009 in Knoxville), 42-41 in the 2009 NCAA Sweet 16 (Mar. 27, 2009 in Memphis) and 53-43 last year in Waco (Dec. 14, 2010).

Ball Security or the Lack Thereof Tennessee has been its own worst enemy turning

the ball over in the fi rst three games of the season. UT committed a total of 24 turnovers in the loss to

Virginia which led to 29 UVa points. On the season, UT has generated just 16 points off

of miscues per game while the opposition is bank-ing 20 ppg off of Orange mistakes.

Second chance points per game are dead even with the opposition at 12.7 ppg each.

Free Throw Defense is Killin’ Us UT has been very inconsistent from the charity

stripe in the early going connecting on 67.1 per-cent (47-70).

Free throws have felt like turnovers for some of the Lady Vols. Senior Glory Johnson has been sent to the line 21 times and connected on just 10 for a 47.6 accuracy rate.

Where have all the Handles Gone? And now for the no handles or feet-- the Lady Vols

had trouble hanging onto the basketball or not walking with it at Virginia. UT turned the ball over a costly 24 times which resulted in 29 points for the Cavaliers. Eight of the miscues were called as “traveling.”

To date, UT has seven more oops plays than the opposition (59-52).

Quick HittersPride in Board Play Coach Pat Summitt’s mantra of defense and

boards has been a staple of her nearly four de-cades of coaching.

In two 2011-12 preseason exhibitions contests, the Lady Vols outrebounded the opposition 52.0 rpg to 26.5 rpg.

UT started out the 2011-12 regular season haul-ing in 54 boards against Pepperdine while the Waves snagged 34.

Tennessee fell off the rebounding wagon in the very next game as Miami controlled the glass collecting 45 boards to the Lady Vols’ 38 total re-bounds. That was a vast improvement over UT’s 13-rebound deficit at halftime to the Hurricanes.

UT corrected the rebounding problem against Virginia, 45-38, with Shekinna Stricklen collect-ing 14 boards.

This season, the Lady Vols hold a +6.3 rebound-ing advantage, 45.3-39.0, in 2011-12.

6 LADY VOL BASKETBALL /// 2011-12 GAME NOTES

TENNESSEE VS. BAYLOR NOV. 27, 2011

Last season, in 37 games, Tennessee was out-rebounded only twice -- by Georgia Tech, 37-36 and vs. Kentucky in the SEC Tournament fi nal, 46-41.

Overall, the Lady Vols held a +12.4 rebounding advantage, 46.3 to 33.9, in 2010-11.

Going StreakingStreaking into 2011-12

The Lady Vols will carry a 38-game home court winning streak into the game against Baylor. It is the third longest in Lady Vol history. From Feb. 21, 1976 vs. Cumberland (a 90-42 win) until los-ing on Mar. 10, 1979 vs. Old Dominion (74-72), UT won 37 consecutive games. Tennessee’s best home court winning streak was 69 consecutive games from Feb. 2, 1991 to Jan. 6, 1996.

Lady Vol Streaks The Lady Vols last loss at home was against Duke,

62-54, on Feb. 16, 2009, since then UT has won 38 home games.

The last time UT lost on the road was on Nov. 20, 2011 at Virginia, 69-64 OT. Since then, UT has not played a road games.

The last time the Lady Vols lost on a neutral court was against Notre Dame, 73-59, in the 2011 NCAA Elite 8 game on Mar. 28, 2011. Since that time, UT has not played on a neutral court.

Shekinna Has It Going On Lady Vol senior Shekinna Stricklen has the na-

tion’s longest starting streak entering the 2011-12 season.

Stricklen has started 107 consecutive games and is joined in the elite club by a pair of players on upcoming UT opponent rosters.

DePaul senior forward Keisha Hampton has start-ed 106 consecutive games while Miami’s (Fla.) Shenise Johnson has been in the starting fi ve for 104 consecutive games.

Miami traveled to Knoxville for the State Farm TipOff on (a 92-76 loss). UT and DePaul meet in Madison Square Garden on Dec. 11 in the Mag-gie Dixon Classic.

TBA - The Place to PlayRocky Top, You’ll Always Be...

Home, sweet home, to me.... On good ole Rocky Top, Tennessee has already entertained the home fans to a scoring bonanza this season av-eraging 90.5 ppg on The Summitt while holding the opponents to 66.5 ppg. No wonder the Lady Vols average a nation leading 12,149 fans per game.

Toughest Place To Play The University of Tennessee’s Thompson-Boling

Arena is still the toughest women’s basketball arena in the nation to secure a win. The Lady Vols have fashioned a 343-20 all-time record on “The Summitt” for a 94.45 winning percentage since the doors were opened in 1987.

Welcome to “The Summitt” The playing court in the Thompson-Boling Arena

on the University of Tennessee campus donned a new look for the 2005-06 season.

After Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt passed Dean Smith for most NCAA collegiate basketball wins of all-time with a 75-54 win over Purdue on Mar. 22, 2005, UT named the TBA court, “The Sum-mitt.”

The fl oor had a complete overhaul with perma-nent logos of both the Lady Vols and Vols paint-

ed directly in front of the scorer’s table; the free throw lanes were painted orange with “SEC” re-versed out; the giant jump circle/mid-court TEN-NESSEE was given a new brighter color scheme, and “The Summitt,” Coach Summitt’s actual sig-nature adorns the sidelines opposite the team benches.

300 Wins in TBA Tennessee recorded its 300th win in Thompson-

Boling Arena when the Lady Vols defeated the Stanford Cardinal, 79-69 OT on Dec. 21, 2008.

Seven years earlier, UT grabbed its 200th TBA win over the University of Southern California on Nov. 18, 2001, 106-66.

UT has now amassed a 343-20 (.942) record since the Orange and White moved into the Thomp-son-Boling Arena to start the 1987-88 season 25-years ago.

Along the way, the Lady Vols have produced 10 fl awless home records: in 1988-89 (15-0), 1991-92 (14-0), 1992-93 (13-0), 1993-94 (15-0), 1994-95 (15-0), 1997-98 (16-0), 1998-99 (14-0), 2000-01 (15-0), 2002-03 (16-0), 2009-10 (17-0) and 2010-11 (17-0).

UT also registered a former NCAA record 69-game home court-winning streak from Feb. 1, 1991 thru Jan. 2, 1996.

Just 20 TBA Losses The Tennessee Lady Vols rarely lose at home. In fact, since moving to the Thompson-Boling

Arena for the 1987-88 campaign, UT has lost two games in one season just seven times.

UT lost two games in TBA during the inaugural 1987-88 campaign, 1996-97, 1999-00, 2001-02, 2003-04, 2005-06 and 2008-09 seasons.

The 20 all-time losses at TBA have come at the hands of just 10 teams: Virginia (2008), Florida (2006), LSU (2008, 2006), Duke (2009, 2007, 2004), Connecticut (2004, 2002, 2000, 1996), Louisiana Tech (1999, 1989), Georgia (1996, 1991), Texas (2003, 2002, 1987), Stanford (1996) and Auburn (1988).

Home Sweet Home The victory over Georgia on Jan. 31, 2005, was

the Lady Vols 400th home win since Pat Summitt took over as head coach in 1974.

Summitt has won 91.6 percent of all home games in 38 years producing a 494-45 overall record.

Home losses (in the Summitt era) include: six in Alumni Gym from 1974-76; 19 in Stokely Athlet-ics Center from 1976-87; and 20 in Thompson-Boling Arena.

On the Court100 Point Games

Since 1974, the Lady Vols have gone over the century mark 76 times.

The 1987-88 team hit triple digits in seven games to lead the NCAA.

UT has a record of 73-3 all-time in 100-point games and a 51-0 record when hitting the cen-tury mark at Thompson-Boling Arena.

In Overtime Tennessee is 28-14 all-time in overtime games. UT’s most recent overtime aff air was a 69-64 loss

at Virginia on Nov. 20, 2011. The most OT games in a year was tied in 2003-04

with four as the Lady Vols went 3-1 in overtime losing to Georgia, 68-66, and defeating Auburn, 68-61, DePaul, 96-89, and Stanford, 70-66.

It tied the mark set in 1996-97, when the Lady Vols were 3-1 in overtime contests losing to

Georgia, 94-93, and defeating Texas, 68-65, Vanderbilt, 92-79 and LSU, 100-99.

UT’s 22 points in the OT against Florida (2-3-05), was the most ever scored by the Lady Vols in a single overtime.

UT’s most recent OT aff air in Knoxville was a 82-72 win over Stanford on Dec. 19, 2010.

Lady Vols Own All-Time Wins Mark Tennessee is the all-time wins leader in the NCAA

with 1,173 victories. The next closest program all-time in terms of wins is Louisiana Tech, which owns a 1,000-212 record (entering the 2011-12 season). The Lady Vols boast a 1,173-255-2 (.827) all-time record.

Staff ers Have, But Never a Player No former Lady Vol who has joined the collegiate

coaching ranks has ever beaten Head Coach Pat Summitt.

Elite CompanyRookie Starts

A true rookie got a starting nod on the opening day of the 2011-12 season.

When Coach Pat Summitt started freshman Ariel Massengale against Pepperdine in the opening game of the 2011-12 season, it marked only the 14th time in her coaching career that a freshman started her very fi rst game at Tennessee -- out of a total of 161 all-time Lady Vols who have played at UT.

The list of opening day rookie starters: Taber Spani, 2009, Glory Johnson and Shekinna Strick-len, 2008, Angie Bjorklund, 2007, Candace Park-er, 2005, Shyra Ely 2001, Ashley Robinson 2000, Gwen Jackson 1999, Kyra Elzy 1996, Chamique Holdsclaw 1995, Tiff ani Johnson 1994, Bridgette Gordon and Sheila Frost 1985.

The Nod With Ariel Massengale getting the opening day

start against Pepperdine, she became the 61st rookie all-time to earn a starting assignment at UT. Last season, Meighan Simmons, a 5-9 point guard from Cibolo, Texas, became the 60th rook-ie all-time to earn a starting assignment at Ten-nessee.

The previous year, rookie Kamiko Williams (59th all-time) started against Arkansas while her class-mate and fellow rookie Taber Spani, became the 13th frosh to start her very fi rst game at UT and the 58th rookie overall.

In 2008-09, a record number of players – FIVE – were called on to start for the Lady Vols as rookies: Shekinna Stricklen (starter number 53), Glory Johnson (number 54), Briana Bass (55), Ali-cia Manning (56) and Kelley Cain (57) all earned starting assignments.

Angie Bjorklund became the 52nd all-time Lady Vol to start during her freshman season –she started in 30 of 38 games.

Previously, Cait McMahan earned a start at point guard versus Louisiana Tech during her freshman season.

Prior to Cait’s starting nod, then-redshirt fresh-man Candace Parker played and started in all 36 games her rookie season in 2005-06.

A season earlier, Tennessee coach Pat Summitt liked what she saw out of the 2004-05 rookie class as two players earned starting nods during the season. Nicky Anosike played in all 35 games with 25 starting assignments and Alexis Horn-buckle played in all 35 games with 21 starts. This duo became the 48th and 49th rookies all-time to earn starting assignments at UT as rookies.

TENNESSEE VS. BAYLOR NOV. 27, 2011

Glory -- Maybe This Season? It’s a fact that Tennessee has produced some of

the greatest players ever in women’s collegiate basketball.

It’s a little known fact that there has only been one double-fi gure rebounder in the history of the program -- Olympian and Kodak All-Ameri-can Patricia Roberts.

Roberts hauled in 14.2 rpg (467 total) in her only season as a Lady Vol in 1976-77. She also claimed scoring honors with 29.9 ppg (987 points) in her single season on The Hill.

In 2006-07, Candace Parker came the closest to a double-fi gure rebounding average but had to settle for 9.8 rpg.

Last season, Glory Johnson fl irted with the elu-sive double-digit and managed 9.7 rpg.

Johnson started out the year with 13 boards against Pepperdine.

Johnson Could be the Fourth UT senior Glory Johnson needs just 109 rebounds

to pass the 1,000 rebound plateau. Only three other Lady Vols have managed to

grab 1,000 rebounds -- Chamique Holdsclaw (1,295), Sheila Frost (1,038) and Tamika Catchings (1,004). Six other UT players snagged over 900 career rebounds.

Lady Vol HonoreesStricklen Honored as AP A-A Lady Vol senior guard Shekinna Stricklen was se-

lected as a First Team Associated Press Preseason All-American.

Also joining Stricklen on the fi ve player team were Baylor’s Brittney Griner, Notre Dame’s Sky-lar Diggins, Stanford’s Nnemkadi Ogwumike and Miami’s Shenise Johnson.

Tennessee and Stricklen will face each of those teams this season.

Johnson Named a Lowe’s Nominee Tennessee senior forward Glory Johnson has

been named one of 30 women’s basketball nominees for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, presented to student-athletes who excel on and off the fi eld.

Johnson is one of three nominees from the SEC. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete

must be classifi ed as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence -community, classroom, character and competition. The CLASS award is an acro-nym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School and focuses on the total student-athlete.

“Glory is an ideal candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award,” Head Coach Pat Summitt said, “blending the perfect balance of excellence in the classroom, on the court and in the commu-nity. She is our fi rst player ever to graduate in three years and that shows her dedication and discipline toward her academics.”

Johnson captured All-SEC First Team honors in 2010-11 and was a fi nalist for the 2011 State Farm All-America Team.

A Master of Science in Communication candi-date, Johnson completed her undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Programs with a Con-centration in Global Studies and a Specialization in Global Politics and Economy in only three years.

We Love a Happy Meal The Tennessee Lady Vols must lead the nation

with the number of McDonald’s High School All-Americans on their roster in 2011-12 with eight players.

Tennessee’s McDonald’s All-Americans: Vicki Baugh, Glory Johnson, Alicia Manning, Meighan Simmons, Shekinna Stricklen, Taber Spani, Cierra Burdick and Ariel Massengale.

The 2011 meeting with Miami in the State Farm TipOff Classic marked the Lady Vols eighth ap-pearance in the State Farm TipOff Classic and the fi fth time to host the event. Tennessee now has a 6-2 record in TipOff games.

Making a Claim In the fi rst TipOff in 1993, Lady Vol coach Pat Sum-

mitt picked up her 500th career victory. In the TipOff in 1998, Purdue and Coach Carolyn

Peck halted the Lady Vols school record 46-game consecutive winning streak.

Tennessee’s last opening game home loss to start a season came against Louisiana Tech in the 1999 TipOff Classic, 69-64, as UT failed to convert free throws in the waning seconds.

In Tennessee’s most recent TipOff appearance in 2009 in Knoxville, the Lady Vols spoiled Brittney Griner’s fi rst collegiate game with a 74-65 victory over the Lady Bears.

Going into the Hall Lady Vol Olympian and All-American Nikki Mc-

Cray Pinson will be a member of the 2012 Wom-en’s Basketball Hall of Fame Induction Class. Also being inducted are: Nancy Fahey (Coach), Pamela McGee (Player), Inge Nissen (Player), Robin Rob-erts (Contributor), and Dawn Staley (Player). Mc-Gee was introduced at the 2011 TipOff in Knox-ville.

Fourth Earliest Opener The game against Pepperdine was the fourth

earliest date the Lady Vols have ever opened the season. UT’s earliest opening game was during the 2002-03 season with fi rst tip on Nov. 10, 2002, taking on #22/19-ranked Oklahoma and register-ing a 94-68 win.

BREAKING IT DOWN

GAME 2 UT vs. Miami // Nov. 15, 2011

KNOXVILLE -- It took over two minutes for the first shot to finally fall. Pepperdine never led, but kept within two baskets until an 8-0 run capped by Meighan Simmons’ jumper with 10:32 left in the first half gave Tennessee a 20-9 lead.

Summitt played her entire bench in the first half, including freshmen Cierra Burdick and Isabelle Harrison, and the Tennessee reserves scored 20 points.

Glory Johnson led the Lady Vols with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Shekinna Stricklen and Simmons each had 13 points, Taber Spani contributed 11 points and Briana Bass had 10.

Pepperdine’s tough defense came at a cost. The Waves had 14 personal fouls in the first half, though the Lady Vols were uncharacteristically sloppy at the charity stripe, making just two of six foul shots before halftime.

Still, it forced Rousseau to go deep into her bench, which was responsible for just four points in the first half and 19 total. Jazmine Jackson had 17 points for the Waves, who shot 28.4 percent to the Lady Vols’ 49.2 percent shooting.

Tennessee outrebounded Pepperdine 54-34, but couldn’t turn them into points. The Lady Vols gained control of the game with their 20 fast-break points and by sinking eight of their 10 3-point baskets in the second half.

Summitt gave a starting nod to point guard Ariel Massengale, making her just the 14th Lady Vol to start her very first career game. The coach was so convinced of Massengale’s talent and frustrated by a lack of a bona fide point guard last season that she dubbed Mas-sengale a starter back in March.

Massengale sat for more than 13 minutes in the first half after picking up two fouls and finished with just one field goal, but had five assists to just one turnover and came up with two steals and three rebounds in 20 minutes.

KNOXVILLE - Junior Taber Spani hit a game-high four three-pointers, but none bigger than the one she drained from the top of the key as the shot clock expired with 6:36 remaining in the game. The swish ignited an 11-0 Tennessee run and ultimately helped lift the No. 3 Tennessee women’s basketball team (2-0) to a 92-76 victory over No. 7 Miami (1-1) on Tuesday eve-ning at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The pair of top ten teams were tied, 42-42, at halftime before Tennessee scored the second half’s first nine points and 18 of the first 22 to take a 60-46 lead.

But the Hurricanes came storming back, eventually getting as close as 73-68. That’s when Spani saved her best for her last shot.

After her three-pointer, the Lady Vols forced a shot clock violation on the other end, and freshman Isabelle Harrison scored her first points of the evening off of on an offensive rebound.

Tennessee went on to score 19 of the game’s final 27 points to notch its second win in as many tries this season.

After Miami’s Riquna Williams went off for 17 first-half points, UT limited her to just seven in the second. Although she finished with a game-high 24 points, the Lady Vols made her use 28 shot attempts to get there.

Tennessee had five players in double-figures. Joining Spani were Meighan Simmons (18), Johnson (16), Shekinna Stricklen (15) and Ariel Massengale (11). Johnson also chipped in a team-high nine rebounds, while Massengale led the game with the second-highest assist total by a UT freshman all-time with nine.

In the first half, it was the Hurricanes that got off to a strong start. After Baugh scored the game’s opening bucket on a layup, Miami went on a 10-2 run for its largest lead of the contest, 10-4.

The Hurricanes made four of their first six three-point attempts, and led until a try from Simmons put the Lady Vols back ahead, 18-16, with 13:41 left in the first half.

After UM’s Stefanie Yderstorm responded with a three-pointer of her own complemented by a Krystal Saunders layup, the Lady Vols scored eight consecutive points to take a 26-21 lead with 10:21 left in the first half and would not trail again.

UT matched its biggest lead of the first 20 minutes, 38-31, on a jumper from Spani, who led the team with 13 first-half points. UM closed the first half with an 11-4 run to tie the score, 42-42.

GAME 3UT at Virginia // Nov. 20, 2011

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Chelsea Shine scored 18 points, including a key basket in over-time, and Virginia stunned turnover-prone No. 3 Tennessee 69-64 on Sunday.

The Cavaliers (4-0) came into the game allowing just over 42 points a game under first-year coach Joanne Boyle, and dictated the pace against a Lady Vols team averaging 90.5 points.

Taber Spani led the Lady Vols (2-1) with 22 points, including a 3-pointer 59 seconds into overtime that gave Tennessee a 61-58 lead, but the Cavaliers scored the next 11 points, the crowd at John Paul Jones Arena getting more excited with each basket.

China Crosby had 13 points and Ataira Franklin 12 for Virginia, which beat Tennessee for just the third time in 16 games. Lexie Gerson and Ariana Moorer each scored 10. Shekinna Stricklen had 16 and Glory Johnson 15 for the Lady Vols, who missed 10 of 21 free throws.

In the overtime, after Spani’s 3-pointer, Moorer hit a pair of free throws, and then a foul-line jumper, one of only three baskets she made in 16 tries. Shine followed a turnover the Ten-nessee with a short baseline jumper, and Crosby hit 3 of 4 free throws to make it 67-61.

The Lady Vols never had an answer, and each time they failed to score and Virginia came away with the ball, the crowd of 6,450 at John Paul Jones Arena got louder and more excited.

Stricklen had a chance to give the Lady Vols the lead near the end of regulation when she was fouled while scoring, but she missed the free throw, one of 10 misses in 21 tries for Tennessee. The Lady Vols also had 24 turnovers that the Cavaliers turned into 27 points.

Crosby broke a 56-all tie with 36.6 seconds to go in regulation, hitting a desperate shot from the baseline with the shot clock running down. After a timeout, Spani calmly swished a 12-footer from the left baseline with 22.8 seconds to go, pulling Tennessee even again.

Moorer’s last chance drive in regulation was cleanly blocked just before the buzzer. The Cavaliers tightened their defense and Tennessee continued to be sloppy early in the sec-ond half as Virginia opened the half on a 14-6 run. The Cavaliers led by as many as nine and by 47-40 when the Lady Vols began asserting themselves on the offensive glass and rallied.

Tennessee scored eight straight points, taking its first lead since the first half, but Shine scored inside and Crosby’s three-point play boosted the Cavaliers’ edge back to 52-48.

The Lady Vols pulled even three times, but only led once thereafter.

Virginia used a 12-2 run to take a 24-20 lead in a sloppy first half. The Lady Vols turned the ball over at least seven times in the drought, and went almost 5 minutes without scoring.

Spani, who hit the floor hard at one point and went back to the locker room, led Tennessee with 12 points in the half, and Gerson led the Cavaliers with eight.
