Use tener + que + an infinitive to say that you have to do something.

3. We have to wear a dress to the wedding.

Tener ganas de…

Use “tener ganas de” + an infinitive to talk about what you feel like doing.

Tener + ganas + de + an infinitive.

1. I feel like eating something.

Tengo ganas de comer algo.

2. Do you feel like going to the movies?

¿Tienes ganas de ir al cine?

Tener Idioms

Tener idioms do not directly translate, but we use tener for these expressions!

That's because tener, the verb meaning "to have" in the sense of "to possess” is frequently used in idioms to refer to a wide range of emotions and other states of being.

While we may say in English that you are hungry or a person is thirsty, in Spanish we say the equivalent of you have hunger or someone has thirst.
