“TRY TO BEA RAINBOW IN

SOMEONE’S CLOUD”- MAYA ANGELOU

Welcome to your Winter edition of Tenant Connect. We’re really excited about the new look and feel of our newsletter and would love to hear your feedback on the design, as well as the stories. Lots has been happening over the last few months. You may have seen a post on social media recently about Milli from To Keep or Not to Keep. She has done wonders helping some of our tenants declutter their homes. Milli’s first step always starts with a cuppa. For those of you who love gardening or fancy giving it a try, you’ll be pleased to know that last year’s Gardening Competition was so successful, we’re running it again this year! Plenty of time to get your garden looking fabulous for Spring.

The Big Dish Up participants have been cooking up a storm in Mitchell Park, meeting up weekly to cook meals in bulk that they can enjoy at home. You’ll find out more on this and other community cooking programs like Come Swish this Dish in our new What’s Cooking? section.

This newsletter is all about you, so if you’d like to promote your local business, or have a feel-good story to tell, or a helpful service to recommend, we’d love to hear from you.

Your Tenant Connect newsletter is now available in digital or email format. To receive your newsletter by email, please contact your Tenancy Officer and let them know so that you can receive a copy by email next time too.

NDISAs the transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in SA nears completion, all those existing SA clients unable to be transitioned fully by 30 June 2018 will have had their access to the Scheme determined by this date.

The focus for the next six months will be on developing quality plans with each participant. It is expected planning for SA clients will be complete by 31 December 2018.

Until participants receive an approved NDIS plan, there will be no loss in service as the SA Government has agreed they will maintain current funding arrangements to their clients and providers until then.

All cats and dogs born after 1st July 2018 must now be desexed by 6 months old. This will help drastically reduce the number of unwanted dogs and cats that end up in animal shelters. The National Desexing Network can help pension or concession card holders find low cost options. Call 1300 368 992 or email [email protected] for more information. Microchipping is also now mandatory in South Australia – all cats and dogs are legally required to be microchipped by 3 months old. The procedure is quick and painless, like getting an injection and it permanently identifies your pet, should they ever get lost or wander off. Not having money to buy food for your family is a devastating feeling. Foodbank runs Foodhubs to help those who are in need by providing a dignified experience with a general store environment that offers choice and provides much greater value for money.

Foodbank doesn’t give food directly to clients, their support partners assess and issue vouchers. You can call Foodbank to find your nearest support partner. There are Foodhubs in Bowden, Elizabeth, Edwardstown and Mount Gambier.

For more info visit foodbanksa.org.au or call 8351 1136.

Did you know that MarionLIFE is a Foodbank support partner and runs a FREE weekly bus to the Foodhub at Edwardstown? If you or someone you know has a Foodbank voucher and need help with transport, we would be happy to help. The bus leaves every Tuesday morning at 9.30am sharp.MarionLIFE, 877 Marion Rd, Mitchell Park. Bookings are helpful, but not essential.

Call MarionLIFE on 8277 0304 for more information.

KickStart for Kids believes that every child, regardless of their background, should have an equal chance to succeed in life and reach their potential.

If kids are hungry or under strain, they can’t fully engage at school. KickStart for Kids runs breakfast, lunch and mentoring programs in schools across SA. They serve around 50,000 breakfasts every week in 350 SA schools.

Since kids who come to school without breakfast often don’t have lunch, KickStart for Kids also makes 10,000 cheese and Vegemite sandwiches every week. All made by volunteers in the kitchens of Western Hospital. Check out kickstartforkids.com.au for more information or call Ian on 0400 005 880.

THINGS TO KNOWfor Winter

STORMS STAYING WARMWinter storms can be a pretty scary experience. There are some simple things that you can do to prepare your home and lessen the impact of storms.

⃣ Learn how to safely turn off your power, water and gas.

⃣ Remove tree branches that are close to your house.

⃣ Secure loose items around your property.

⃣ Keep gutters, downpipes and drains clear.

⃣ Secure outdoor furniture and gardening items.

⃣ Store garden chemicals well above ground level.

⃣ Tune into your local radio and TV station for storm

warnings and weather updates.

⃣ Check on neighbours and friends who may need

special assistance.

⃣ Shelter any pets or farm animals.

⃣ Park vehicles under cover or protect with secured

tarpaulins or blankets. Source: stormwise.com.au

Australian homes are often better at keeping us cool than warm. Constant exposure to low temperatures can increase blood pressure and increase our risk of heart and lung disease as our heart and lungs struggle to keep us warm. There are some really simple things we can do to make our home warmer and more energy efficient during the colder months.

⃣ If you’re just heating one room or living area, close the

doors and windows to keep in the heat. A simple door

snake or rolled up towel can help block out any draughts

coming through under the door.

⃣ Maintain your heaters - get them serviced professionally

every few years to keep them running more efficiently; gas

heaters in particular should be well maintained to ensure

safe operation.

⃣ Close up any rooms you don’t use and turn off the

heating there.

Step 1: Fry the chorizo until crisp. Set aside.

Step 2: In a separate pot, cook up the brown rice pasta as directed. When the pasta is almost cooked, add peas to the warm water for a minute. Strain.

Step 3: Place cooled pasta and peas in serving bowl. Stir in cherry tomatoes, onion and chorizo. *An alternative to a punnet of cherry tomatoes & herb-infused olive oil is a jar of sundried tomatoes in oil, and using a bit of oil from the jar.

In Partnership with MarionLIFE

The Big Dish Up is a community cooking program in Mitchell Park run every year in partnership with MarionLIFE. This year, we had 12 participants who met up once a week for 6 weeks in May/June to cook meals in bulk together, taking dishes home to enjoy for the week ahead. Bec, the program facilitator said that this year we had a vibrant bunch! “Each week, the group members led with ideas about new recipes to try. We’ve had kombucha, kefir, kangaroo and loads of Asian recipes. It’s been a really positive group with everyone keen to collaborate and try new things.”

Come Swish this Dish is a small free cooking workshop that takes place on the first Friday of every month.

Handy Tip: a cheaper option is a tin of tuna instead of chorizo.

For Amelia Balmer, her work generally starts with a cuppa. As the owner of To Keep or Not to Keep – Clutter Management Solutions, Amelia - or Milli - as she is known - said her first step is to understand her clients so she can help them. While Milli helps clients with recycling options, cleaning tips and the removal of smaller unwanted items, she said supporting clients to donate items was also very therapeutic for many.

“A lot of clients say they find it easier to give something away to someone or to donate it, which is really nice and where we can, we try to facilitate that,” she said.

Denise is a single mum and has lived in her home at MitchellPark for 27 years – 24 years as a Housing SA tenant and 3 years with Junction Australia.

Fondly known as ‘Haveachat’, Denise is a community champion, often hosting annual Christmas and Easter events bringing neighbours old and new together to supporteach other and form strong, resilient community ties.

In the last 12 months, Denise has had a number of homeimprovements, such as a new kitchen, new bathroom and newflooring throughout her home. “I was so depressed about my house before theupgrades and now it’s much brighter and easierto clean. It makes me want to do more to improvethe rest of the house and the garden.”
