Christ must be grieved to have so many Christians ignore all

the warnings He has sent and all the signs He has given.

Nineteen centuries ago the church was asleep, ignorant of

His birth, and unacquainted with the prophecies. Now, asanother important event is at the door, the church is

engrossed with the first coming and practically ignores the

second. Christ can do no more than He has done. The signs

we have been studying are so plain and evident that therecan be little excuse for any. We can only pray that the church

will yet awake to its great privilege and not fulfill the part of

the five foolish virgins in the parable. There is yet time, but

there is none to lose. May God grant the church power to

rise, shed its lethargy and drowsiness, and go forth to meet

This parable is spoken for the sake of the church. It is not the world

but the kingdom of heaven that is likened to ten virgins. And it is not

the church in general but the church living at the time when the

bridegroom is about to come-the church of today. Are we to conclude

that only half of the church are ready to meet the bridegroom and thathalf of them will be left outside? It is probably not safe to draw any

conclusions as to the exact number, but one cannot escape the

conclusion that Christ intends to point out that a large part of the

church is not ready to meet Him. And the further lesson should not beneglected: The five foolish virgins were not such as rejected the call to

go out to meet the bridegroom. They heeded it; they went out to meet

Him: but they did not have enough oil, and perished for lack of it. The

Spirit being the oil, the lesson is clear. We need and must have an

extra supply of the Spirit, or our lamps may go out. THE FAITH OF

us should be tardy in seeking a preparation for the coming

of Christ. Let none follow the example of the foolish virgins,

and think that it will be safe to wait until the crisis comesbefore gaining a preparation of character to stand in that

view the church living in the last days, the same that is

with a loud voice. It went forth withthe power thus indicated between the

years 1840-44, more especially in theseventh-month movement of the

latter year, bringing us to the end of

the 2300 days, when the work of

the close of probation, but only the period of the

investigative judgment. In this judgment we are now

living; and during this time other messages are

proclaimed, as the prophecy further declares. At

Involuntarily, this very phraseology was adopted: Behold,

the Bridegroom cometh. The cause of this sudden arousing

was the discovery that the great prophetic period of 2300

days (years) of Daniel 8:14 did not end in the spring of 1844,but would extend to the autumn of that year, and

consequently that the time at which they supposed they

were warranted to look for the appearing of the Lord had

not passed by, but was indeed at the door. At the same time,the relation between the type and the antitype relating to

the cleansing of the sanctuary was partially seen. The

prophecy declared that at the end of the 2300 days the

sanctuary should be cleansed; and as in the type thesanctuary was cleansed on the tenth day of the seventh

month of the Jewish year, that point in the autumn of 1844

was accordingly fixed upon for the termination of the 2300

years.

It fell on the 22d of October. Between the mid-

summer of 1844, when the light on these subjects

was first seen, and the day and month above named

when the 2300 years terminated, perhaps nomovement ever exhibited greater activity than this

respecting the soon coming of Christ, and in no cause

was ever more accomplished in so short a space oftime. A religious wave swept over this country, and

the nation was stirred as no people have been

stirred since the opening of the great Reformation ofthe sixteenth century. This was called the seventh

In 1844 our great High Priest entered the most holy place of the

heavenly sanctuary, to begin the work of the investigative judgment.

{Mar 93.1} (Rev. 14:7) (Dan. 7:9-10)

As the books of record are opened in the judgment, the lives of all

who have believed on Jesus come in review before God. Beginning

with those who first lived upon the earth, our Advocate presents thecases of each successive generation, and closes with the living. Every

name is mentioned, every case closely investigated. Names are

accepted, names rejected. When any have sins remaining upon the

books of record, unrepented of and unforgiven, their names will beblotted out of the book of life. . . . {Mar 93.2}

When Christ entered the most holy place of theheavenly sanctuary to perform the closing work of

the atonement, he committed to his servants the last

message of mercy to be given to the world. Such is

the warning of the third angel of Revelation 14.

Immediately following its proclamation, the Son of

man is seen by the prophet coming in glory to reap

1. The is clearly Gods people moving into marriage withthe LAMB. Where is the Bridegroom one may ask.

Well, he is in the most holy place (DANIEL 7: 10,13).

2. When and Where does the marriage take place?While Jesus had been ministering in the sanctuary,

the judgment had been going on for the righteous

dead, and then for the righteous living. Christ hadreceived His kingdom, having made the atonement for

His people, and blotted out their sin. The subjects of

the kingdom were made up. The marriage of the

Lamb was consummated. -Early Writings, 280:1.

The marriage concludes the investigative judgment.

In the parable of Matthew 22, the same figure of the

marriage is introduced, and the investigative judgment isclearly represented as taking place before the marriage.

Previous to the wedding the king comes to see His guests, to

see if all are attired in the wedding garment, the spotless

robe of character washed and made white in the blood ofthe Lamb. Matthew 22:11, Revelation 7:14. He who is found

wanting is cast out, but all who upon examination are seen

to have the wedding garment on are accepted of God and

accounted worthy of a share in His kingdom and a seat upon

His throne. This work of examination of character, of

determining who are prepared for the kingdom of God, is

that of the investigative judgment, the closing work in thesanctuar above. Great Controvers 428:1.

Great Controversy, 426:1-2.

I saw that while Jesus was in the most holy place He would be

married to the New Jerusalem; and after His work should beaccomplished in the holiest, He would descend to the earth in kingly

power, and take to Himself the precious ones who had patiently

waited His return. Early Writings, 251:1.

They (Christs followers) were not to be present in person at themarriage; for it takes place in heaven, while they are upon the earth.

The followers of Christ are to wait for their Lord, when He will return

from the Wedding but they are to understand His work, and to follow

Him by faith as He goes in before God. It is in this sense that they are

said to go in to the marriage. . And all who through the testimony of

the Scriptures accept the same truths, following Christ by faith as He

enters in before God to perform the last work of mediation, and at its

close to receive His kingdom, all these are represented as going in to

And five of them were wise, and five [were] foolish.WISE :The latter class (wise virgins) had received the grace of God, theregenerating, enlightening power of the Holy Spirit, which renders His word a lamp

to the feet and a light to the path. -Great Controversy, 994:0.

That oil is the righteousness of Christ. It represents character, and character is nottransferable. No man can secure it for another. Each must obtain for himself a

character purified from every stain of sin.-Testimonies to Ministers, 294:0.

But some will have delayed to obtain the oil for replenishing their lamps, and too

late they will find that character, which Is represented by the oil, is not transferable.

FOOLISH:The class represented by the foolish virgins are not hypocrites. Theyhave a regard for the truth, they have advocated the truth, they are attracted to

those who believe the truth; but they have not yielded themselves to the Holy Spirits

working. They have not fallen upon the Rock, Christ Jesus, and permitted their old

nature to be broken up. This class are represented also by the stony-ground hearers.They receive the word with readiness, but they fail of assimilating its principles. Its

influence is not abiding. . They do not know God. They have not studied His

character; they have not held communion with Him; therefore they do not know how

to trust, how to look and live. Their service to God degenerates Into a form. . This is

the class that in time of peril are found crying, Peace and safety. They lull their hearts

into security, and dream not of danger. Christs Object Lessons, 411:1-2.

The state of the Church represented by the foolish virgins,

is also spoken of as the Laodicean state. The True Witness

There are many among us who are deficient in spirituality

There are many among us who are deficient in spirituality,

and who, unless they are wholly converted, will certainly be

lost. Can you afford to run the risk? Pride and weakness of

faith are depriving many of the rich blessings of God. Thereare many who, unless they humble their hearts before the

Lord, will be surprised and disappointed when the cry is

heard, Behold, the Bridegroom cometh. Matthew 25:6.

(remember, the parable of the ten virgins is a parable of theadvent experience) They have the theory of the truth, but

they have no oil in their vessels with their lamps. Our faith

at this time must not stop with an assent to, or belief in, the

theory of the third angels message. We must have the oil ofthe grace of Christ that will feed the lamp and cause the

light of life to shine forth, showing the way to those who are

While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.

Just now we are in the waiting time - but too many are sleeping.

The reason why the Bridegroom delays is because He is longsuffering

to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come

to repentance. 0 the precious long-suffering of our merciful Saviour!

SD, 118:2. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and

slept. By the tarrying of the bridegroom is represented the passing of

the time when the Lord was expected, the disappointment, and the

seeming delay. In this time of uncertainty, the interest of the,superficial and half-hearted soon began to waver, and their efforts to

relax; but those whose faith was based on a personal knowledge of

the Bible, had a rock beneath their feet, which the waves of

disappointment could not wash away. They all slumbered and slept;one class in unconcern and abandonment of their faith, the other class

patiently waiting till clearer light should be given. Yet In the night of

trial the latter seemed to lose, to some extent, their zeal and devotion.

The half-hearted and superficial could no longer lean upon the faith of

their brethren. Each must stand or fall for himself. GC894:1, 895:0.

In the parable as slumbering because their Lord delayed His

coming; but the wise roused themselves at the message of

His approach, and responded to the message, and theirspiritual discernment was not all gone, and they sprang Into

We are in the waiting time; let your loins be girded about,and your lights shining, that may wait for the Lord when he

returns from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks

you may open unto him immediately. -4 Testimonies, 128:8-

the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him

The coming of the bridegroom was at midnight--the darkest hour. So the coming of

Christ will take place in the darkest period of this earth's history. The days of Noah

and Lot pictured the condition of the world just before the coming of the Son ofman. The Scriptures pointing forward to this time declare that Satan will work with

all power and "with all deceivableness of unrighteousness." 2 Thessalonians 2:9, 10.

His working is plainly revealed by the rapidly increasing darkness, the multitudinous

errors, heresies, and delusions of these last days. Not only is Satan leading the world

captive, but his deceptions are leavening the professed churches of our Lord Jesus

Christ. The great apostasy will develop into darkness deep as midnight, impenetrable

as sackcloth of hair. To God's people it will be a night of trial, a night of weeping, a

night of persecution for the truth's sake. But out of that night of darkness God's light

will shine. He causes "the light to shine out of darkness." 2 Corinthians 4:6. When

"the earth was without form, and void, and darkness was upon the face of the

deep," "the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let therebe light; and there was light." Genesis 1:2, 3. So in the night of spiritual darkness,

God's word goes forth, "Let there be light." To His people He says, "Arise, shine; for

thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee." Isaiah 60:1 "Behold,"

says the Scripture, "the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the

Those who are living upon the earth when the intercession of Christ

shall cease in the sanctuary above are to stand in the sight of a holy

God without a mediator. Their robes must be spotless, their characters

must be purified from sin by the blood of sprinkling. Through the grace

of God and their own diligent efforts, they must be conquerors in thebattle with evil. While the investigative judgment is going forward in

heaven, while the sins of penitent believers are being removed from

the sanctuary, there is to be a special work of purification, of putting

away sin, among God's people on earth. {RH, January 17, 1907 par. 4}

To what searching of heart and putting away of sin this

present hour calls us! With what earnestness must the

King's highway be cleared! With what diligence should we

be engaged in the study of the Word which is soon to judgeus! What deep. repentance, confession, -and humbling of

heart should characterize us in this present hour! Have we

on the wedding garment? Have we oil in our vessels with

our lamps? The awakening message has called us to go forthand meet the Bridegroom . Like the ten virgins, the waiting

people of God have responded to the call to the most holy

place .We have seen how that the Sabbath test brings the

sifting to the church . Inspiration is clear that the latter rain willonly fall after the church has been thoroughly sifted. There will be no

latter rain outpouring of the Spirit on a mixed multitude . Foolish

virgins will not participate in the loud cry (see Testimonies, Vol. 5, pp.

81, 82 ; Ibid ., Vol. 1, pp. 180-183 ; Hosea 5 :14, 15 ; 6 :1-3) .

John was shown these things in holy vision. He saw the company represented by the

five wise virgins, with their lamps trimmed and burning, and he exclaimed in

rapture, "Here is the patience of the saints; here are they that keep the

commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. And I heard a voice from heaven

saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth:

Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow

them." {16MR 269.2}

Many who heard the first and second angels' messages thought they would live tosee Christ coming in the clouds of heaven. Had all who claimed to believe the truth

acted their part as wise virgins, the message would ere this have been proclaimed to

every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. But five were wise and five were foolish.

The truth should have been proclaimed by the ten virgins, but only five had made

the provision essential to join that company who walked in the light that had cometo them. The third angel's message was needed. This proclamation was to be made.

Many who went forth to meet the Bridegroom under the messages of the first and

second angels, refused the third angel's message, the last testing message to be

given to the world. {16MR 269.3}

were trimmed and burning. Apparently there was no difference

between the five who were wise and the five who were foolish. To

outward appearance all were prepared, robed in white, and carrying

their lighted lamps. But only five of these virgins were wise. Theseanticipated delay, and filled their flagons with oil, ready for any

emergency. Five of the number had not this foresight; they made no

provision for disappointment or delay. All the virgins are watching for

the bridegroom. Hour after hour passes, and they are still anxiouslylooking for his appearing. But at last the weary, watching ones fall

asleep. And at midnight, the very darkest hour, when their lamps are

most needed, the cry is heard, "Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye

out to meet him."

At the call, the sleeping eyes are opened, and every one is aroused.They see the procession they are to join moving on, bright with

torches and glad with music. They hear the voice of the bridegroom

and the voice of the bride. The five wise virgins trim their lamps, and

go forth to meet the bridegroom. {RH, October 31, 1899 par. 5}

And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us

of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.The foolish virgins made no provision for their lamps; and when

aroused from their slumbers, they found that their lights were goingout. They now see the consequences of their carelessness, and plead

with their companions for a supply of oil: "Give us of your oil," they

say; "for our lamps are going out." But the waiting five, with their

freshly trimmed lamps, have emptied their vessels. They have no oil

to spare, and they answer: "Not so; lest there be not enough for us

and you. But go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves."

But while they went to buy, the procession moved on, and left them

behind. The bridal train entered the house, and the door was shut.

When the foolish virgins reached the banqueting hall, they receivedan unexpected denial. They were left outside in the blackness of the

night. This parable is not a representation of open sinners, but of

those who profess Christ. The bride is the church who is waiting for

the second appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. {RH,

The season of distress and anguish before us will require a faith that can endure

weariness, delay, and hunger--a faith that will not faint though severely tried. Many

of all nations and of all classes, high and low, rich and poor, black and white, will be

cast into the most unjust and cruel bondage. The beloved of God pass weary days,

bound in chains, shut in by prison bars, sentenced to be slain, some apparently left

to die of starvation in dark and loathsome dungeons. . . . No human hand is ready tolend them help. {CC 369.5}

The time is not far distant when the test will come to every soul. The mark of the

beast will be urged upon us. Those who have step by step yielded to worldly

demands and conformed to worldly customs will not find it a hard matter to yield to

the powers that be, rather than subject themselves to derision, insult, threatenedimprisonment, and death. The contest is between the commandments of God and

the commandments of men. In this time the gold will be separated from the dross in

the church.--5T 81 (1882). {LDE 173.6}

In the absence of the persecution there have drifted into our ranks

men who appear sound and their Christianity unquestionable, butwho, if persecution should arise, would go out from us.--Ev 360 (1890).

When the law of God is made void the church will be sifted by fiery

trials, and a larger proportion than we now anticipate will give heed to

seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.--2SM 368 (1891). {LDE 174.2}

Testing times come to all. How do we conduct ourselves under the

test and proving of God? Do our lamps go out? or do we still keep

them burning? Are we prepared for every emergency by our

connection with Him who is full of grace and truth? The five wise

virgins could not impart their character to the five foolish virgins.Character must be formed by us as individuals. Review and Herald,

October 17, 1895.

Note: the Crisis is the Sunday Lawthis is the place the church is

purified, this is where our probation comes to an end and its at thiscrisis that our character is revealed to the world either for or against

God. This is the crisis that is coming at blinding speed, and what she is

saying is that we have to have our character prepared before this

crisis. It will be too late to seek for the righteousness of Christ whenthe guests are called in and examined. Now is the time to put on the

righteousness of Christ,the wedding garment that will fit you to

enter into the marriage supper of the Lamb.

While Jesus pleads as our High Priest, there is hope for every

repentant sinner; but when He at last comes forth from the

sanctuary, mercysdoor will be forever closed. There will be

no intercessor then (Isaiah 59:16). In the type, when thehigh priest came out of the sanctuary, he had made an end

of reconciling. When our High Priest comes forth from the

sanctuary, He will proclaim, He that is unjust, let him be

unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: andhe that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is

holy, let him be holy still(Revelation22:11). Every case is

decided for eternity. Probation is forever ended. All who

wait until that time, hoping to be saved, will find no one toplead their case before the Father; they will be eternally

A sifting among SDA during NSLThe Lord has shown me clearly that the Image of the beast will be

formed before probation closes; for it is to be the great test for the

people of God, by which their eternal destiny will be decided.-2 SM,81:0. As the storm approaches, a large class who have professed faith

in the third angel's message, but have not been sanctified through

obedience to the truth, abandon their position and join the ranks of

the opposition. By uniting with the world and partaking of its spirit,

they have come to view matters in nearly the same light; and when

the test is brought, they are prepared to choose the easy, popular side.

Men of talent and pleasing address, who once rejoiced in the truth,

employ their powers to deceive and mislead souls. They become the

most bitter enemies of their former brethren. When Sabbathkeepersare brought before the courts to answer for their faith, these

apostates are the most efficient agents of Satan to misrepresent and

accuse them, and by false reports and insinuations to stir up the rulers

from heaven. Souls that were scattered all throughthe religious bodies answered to the call, and the

precious were hurried out of the doomed churches,

as Lot was hurried out of Sodom before herdestruction. God's people were strengthened by the

excellent glory which rested upon them in rich

abundance and prepared them to endure the hour of

temptation. I heard everywhere a multitude of

voices saying, "Here is the patience of the saints:

here are they that keep the commandments of God,

A Shaking in the World

Servants of God, with their faces lighted up and shining with holy consecration, will

hasten from place to place to proclaim the message from Heaven. By thousands of

voices, all over the earth, the warning will be given. Miracles will be wrought, thesick will be healed, and signs and wonders will follow the believers. Satan also works

with lying wonders, even bringing down fire from heaven in the sight of men.

[Revelation 13:13.] Thus the inhabitants of the earth will be brought to take their

stand.

The message will be carried not so much by argument as by the deep conviction of

the Spirit of God. The arguments have been presented. The seed has been sown, and

now it will spring up and bear fruit. The publications distributed by missionary

workers have exerted their influence, yet many whose minds were impressed have

been prevented from fully comprehending the truth or from yielding obedience.

Now the rays of light penetrate everywhere, the truth is seen in its clearness, andthe honest children of God sever the bands which have held them. Family

connections, church relations, are powerless to stay them now. Truth is more

precious than all besides. Notwithstanding the agencies combined against the truth,

a large number take their stand upon the Lord's side. {GC88 612.1}

I also saw that manydo not realize what they must be in

order to live in the sight of the Lord without a high priest in

the sanctuary through the time of trouble. Those whoreceive the seal of the living God and are protected in the

time of trouble must reflect the image of Jesus

fully. {Early Writings page 71.1}

"Said the angel, "Deny self; ye must step fast." Some of us have had

time to get the truth and to advance step by step, and every step we

have taken has given us strength to take the next. But now time is

almost finished, and what we have been years learning, they will haveto learn in a few months. They will also have much to unlearn and

much to learn again. Those who would not receive the mark of the

beast and his image when the decree goes forth, must have decision

nowto say, Nay, we will not regard the institution of the beast.{Early

"Time is almost finished. Do you reflect the lovely image of Jesus as

you should?" Then I was pointed to the earth and saw that there

would have to be a getting ready among those who have of lateembraced the third angel's message. Said the angel, "Get ready, get

ye have ever yet died." I saw that there was a great work to do for

crown. Surrounded by the angelic host, He left heaven. The plagues

were falling upon the inhabitants of the earth. Some were denouncing

God and cursing Him. Others rushed to the people of God and beggedto be taught how they might escape His judgments. But the saints had

nothing for them. The last tear for sinners had been shed, the last

agonizing prayer offered, the last burden borne, the last warning

given. The sweet voice of mercy was no more to invite them. When

the saints, and all heaven, were interested for their salvation, they hadno interest for themselves.Life and death had been set before them.

Many desired life, but made no effort to obtain it. They did not choose

life, and now there was no atoning blood to cleanse the guilty, no

compassionate Saviour to plead for them, and cry, "Spare, spare thesinner a little longer." All heaven had united with Jesus, as they heard

the fearful words, "It is done. It is finished." The plan of salvation had

been accomplished, but few had chosen to accept it. And as mercy's

sweet voice died away, fear and horror seized the wicked. With

terrible distinctness they heard the words, "Too late! too late!"

Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour

wherein the Son of man cometh: Warning, admonition, promise, all

are for us, upon whom the ends of the world are come. "Therefore let

us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober" (1

Thessalonians 5:6). . . . Watch against the stealthy approach of theenemy, watch against old habits and natural inclinations, lest they

assert themselves; force them back, and watch. Watch the thoughts,

watch the plans, lest they become self-centered. Watch over the souls

whom Christ has purchased with His own blood. Watch for

opportunities to do them good. If you draw close to Jesus and seek to

adorn your profession by a well-ordered life and godly conversation,

your feet will be kept from straying into forbidden paths. If you will

only watch, continually watch unto prayer, if you will do everything as

if you were in the immediate presence of God, you will be saved fromyielding to temptation, and may hope to be kept pure, spotless, and

undefiled till the last. If you hold the beginning of your confidence firm

unto the end, your ways will be established in God; and what grace

has begun, glory will crown in the kingdom of our God. {AG 332.6}
