Day 1: Depart U.S. for Delhi, India
Day 2: Arrive Delhi We arrive in India’s hyper- active capital late evening and transfer to our hotel.
Day 3: Delhi After a morning briefing with our tour director, this afternoon we tour Delhi, includ-ing the 16th-century Tomb of Humayun; Qutab Minar, the 234-step tower dating to 1193; and India Gate, honoring the 90,000 Indian soldiers who died in World War I. Tonight we enjoy a welcome dinner at our hotel. B,D
Day 4: Delhi Today we explore Old Delhi, beginning with the Gandhi Memorial, the simple black marble slab honoring Mahatma Gandhi. Next, two renowned 17th-century landmarks: Lal Qila, the Red Fort palaces where we stop for photos; and the red sandstone and marble Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque. Then we ride rickshaws through Chandni Chowk market; visit a Sikh temple; and tour the National Museum. B,L
Day 5: Delhi/Pushkar Today we depart Delhi very early by express train for the half-day jour-ney to Ajmer. Continue by motorcoach for the 45-minute trip to Pushkar on the shores of sacred Pushkar Lake. Mid-afternoon we reach our deluxe resort. Later we gather for a camel cart ride and orientation tour of the Pushkar Camel Fair, where Indians come from near and far for this part bazaar and trade fair, part religious pilgrimage. Return to our resort for dinner together tonight. B,L,D
Day 6: Pushkar Camel Fair We start our day with a morning tour of Pushkar village, where thousands of devotees experience a religious resurgence by swimming in the sacred waters of Pushkar Lake. Then we return to our resort for lunch before an afternoon at leisure to explore Pushkar independently. Again tonight we dine together at our resort. B,L,D

M ystical and spiritual, chaotic and confounding, India overflows with riches. While staying at excellent hotels, we travel the classic Golden Triangle: bustling

Day 8: Jaipur Our first stop is the stunning Hawa Mahal, the elaborately carved pink sandstone “Palace of the Winds.” We continue on to Amber Fort, built by the Kachhawah Rajputs as their capital from 1037 to 1728; Jantar Mantar, the open-air observatory; and City Palace Museum, housing the magnificent art collections of the Maharajahs of Jaipur. Day 9: Jaipur/Sanganer This morning we visit the village of Sanganer to see traditional block print- ing and handmade paper industries. Later we tour a local market and then take a traditional rickshaw ride. Tonight we are dinner guests in the home of a multi-generational Rajasthan family. B,D
Day 10: Jaipur/Ranthambore We travel today to Ranthambore National Park, the former hunting ground of the Maharajah of Jaipur and now a 512-square-mile natural preserve that is home to hundreds of species of birds, reptiles, mammals and, of course, Bengal tigers. This afternoon we take our first game drive through the park. B,L,D
Day 11: Ranthambore We take both morning and afternoon game drives today to see not only game (though tiger and leopard sightings are not guaranteed) but also picturesque ruins of forts and palaces. B,L,D
Day 12: Ranthambore/Kalakho We depart early for Kalakho, where we embark on a camel safari to meet local Meena tribespeople in their homes. B,L,D
Day 13: Kalakho/Agra En route to Agra today, we stop in the ancient village of Abhaneri to see
the fortified Chand Baori stepwell (c. 800), whose 3,500 steps descend some 13 stories into the ground. Continuing on, we reach the ancient Mughal stronghold of Agra early this afternoon. B,D
Day 14: Agra This morning we visit the Taj Mahal, the magnificent tomb built by Emperor

Day 15: Agra/Varanasi We depart by coach this morning for Delhi, where we board a late afternoon flight to Varanasi, the holiest city in Hinduism. We dine tonight at our hotel. B,L,D
Day 16: Varanasi/Sarnath Today we visit nearby Sarnath, where the Buddha first taught after achieving enlightenment. One of Buddhism’s four holiest sites, Sarnath draws pilgrims from the world over. We see some of the temples and stupas then tour Sarnath Museum, housing a superb collection of Buddhist artifacts from excavations here. Highlights include a statue of the Buddha turning the wheel of law, and the
celebrated Lion Capital of Emperor Ashoka, dating to 250 bce. Back in Varanasi tonight we attend a traditional aarti offering ceremony as we cruise along the Ganges. B,L
Day 17: Varanasi Early this morning we return to the Ganges where Hindu pilgrims perform their rituals along the ghats (steps)
leading to the river. We visit several ghats by boat as we experience for ourselves the spiritual aura of the hallowed Ganges waters. Then we return to our hotel with time to rest before this afternoon’s walking tour. Tonight we celebrate our journey at a farewell dinner at our hotel. B,D
Day 18: Varanasi/Delhi We fly this afternoon to Delhi, where the evening is at leisure. B
Day 19: Return to U.S. Early today we trans-fer to the airport for our return flight to the U.S.

Meet Your Temple Faculty HostHoward Spodek has been teaching at Temple since 1972, specializing in the History of India, Urbanization, and World History. He was awarded Temple’s Great Teacher Award in 1993. He has spent thirteen
years studying and teaching in the subcontinent, with numerous publications, most notably Ahmedabad: Shock City of Twentieth Century India (2011). He has been the subject specialist and executive producer of two documentary films: Ahmedabad: The Life of a City in India (1983) and The Urban World: A Case Study of Slum Relocation (2013).
Howard led a university faculty tour of urban India, sponsored by the US Department of Education and administered through the Fulbright Office, New Delhi, in 1981. His college textbook The World’s History (5th edition, 2014) is widely used in universities, colleges, and AP world history courses.
