A MESSAGE FROM RABBI KAPLAN
Beginning to Read the Torah Over Again- The Search for Meaning and Purpose
This year it seems that most of the Jewish holidays are falling on Friday night and Saturday. Just a few weeks ago, we
celebrated Rosh Hashanah on a Friday night and Saturday and this coming week we will celebrate Sukkot on a Friday night
and Saturday as well. The following week we will have Simchat Torah in which we celebrate the concluding of the reading of
the five books of Moses and the beginning of the process all over again.
On Friday night October 16, 2020, we begin reading the Torah from the beginning. Parshat B’reishit is one of the most
exciting portions in the entire Torah (Genesis 1:1 - 6:8). Indeed there is so much exciting material in it that it is unfortunate
that it is all crammed into one single week. I could see focusing on dozens of episodes that occur all within this single portion
each one significant enough to study on its own or have its own sermon.
To briefly recap the highlights, God creates the world in six days and six nights and then rests on the seventh (Genesis 1:1-2:3)
thereby creating the Shabbat, one of Judaism’s central themes. The human race is created with Adam and Eve who are placed
in the Garden of Eden where they are to have an idyllic life. They are told not to eat from the fruit of a certain tree. They do so
anyway, and as a consequence they are exiled from the Garden (Genesis 2:15-3:4) and forced to toil for their existence. Life
outside the Garden for humans turns ugly when their son Cain kills his brother Abel (Genesis 4:1-24). By the end of the
portion, God is becoming increasingly uneasy with aberrant human behavior, although God recognizes that some people are
behaving better than others.
The Book of Genesis begins with the myth of creation of the world and mankind, a myth is usually a traditional story of
ostensibly historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or natural
phenomenon. When we talk about a ‘myth’ or ‘mythology’ in religion, we are talking about a story that is passed from
generation to generation because it has metaphorical meaning to the people doing the telling and retelling enough to make it
part of their history. It may be historically accurate or it may not, but that is irrelevant to us since what does matter is that it
resonates deeply and emotionally over the course of multiple generations to the point where it is adopted as a part of the history
of the people. As it is said “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” The Torah with all its component parts, myths,
legend, history and nationhood with its laws and regulations for social survival has become central to the Jewish people.
As reform Jews, we continue to play a role in the continuation of the centrality of the Torah and its meaning for our people.
This is the essence of what we are trying to do in our synagogue. We are taking our sacred myths found in Genesis that have
been told and retold, discussed and rediscussed, over thousands of years and teach the existential meaning in them which may
be applicable now to each of us in our daily lives.
As reform Jews we are not required to come to the table with the same set of beliefs as our fellow members of the temple and
we do not have to leave the table with any consensus either theologically, culturally or historically touching upon every subject.
Rather, especially in the study of this portion of the Torah, it is the process of understanding the beginnings of humanity and
how we then developed an established organized society with social mores, laws, commerce, and religion that is so important
to us today, and helps us to enrich our lives with meaning and purpose.
Let us find the time and commit to the effort during the coming new year to study Torah for the enrichment of our lives and
soul and to make certain that the study of Torah remains central in our religion so that it may continue for generations to come
for the good and welfare of our people and all mankind.

NOTES FROM CANTOR KORITAN
Since Yom Kippur has ended, according to our atonement which has been granted and is now a memory, a new commitment begins. We have prayed to reconnect with our essential inner self. Done! Our indubitable core has remained faithful to God throughout this trial and soul-searching inquest. Happily, less than two weeks after we endeavor to incorporate all this newfound strength of purpose, we are invited to celebrate and rejoice by dancing and singing. Thus, the 48 hours of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are most precious and should be treasured accordingly. There are glorious moments of opportunity for growth and fun, along with barrowsful of spiritual goodies (less caloric than those at onegs). The keys to accomplishment will be prayer and musical participation. In this time of corona virus, if one sings or dances alone, please remember that there will be no consequences or critics. The rewards may be pleasantly surprising. The first day, known as Shemini Atzeret, is reserved for the joy of the festival and for the prayers for rain. As in Israel, we always enjoy more rain here in the Sonoran Desert, so we sing, “Ush’avta mayim b’sason.” (With joy shall you draw the waters of salvation.) Aha! It’s not just about the rain! Yizkor, the memorial service, is recited on this day as it is during all four annual festivals. If we cannot honor those who shaped our lives, who are we? This precious time of homage is for us as much as it is for those whose love we have known. The melodies just blow me away and bring me back. We pray, we sing, and usually eat in the sukkah: “Pit’chu li sha-arei tzedek avo vam odeh Yah” (Open for me the gates of righteousness. I will enter them and give thanks to God.) Okay, this year the sukkah may be virtual and so are the gates but what different does it make if we really feel that our God has welcomed us to the abundance of life? The second day, Simchat Torah, is reserved to celebrate the final reading from the Torah scrolls -- and then we begin reading again! What a thrill it is to be there, to start anew, to hold back the tears or not, and to begin hearing our story all over again. It’s an incredible feeling, knowing that we made the cut! The highlight of this day is the hakafot, held both on the eve (and, traditionally, on the morning of Simchat Torah), when we are invited to sing and dance with the Torah scrolls and parade around our synagogue with unbridled spirit, hoping for those brand new blessings of the new year. This year, 5781, we may also choose to add prayers (please, sing them!) that include our fervent desire –even our need – to be together. If we learned anything in 5780, it’s that we truly want to be one people, “framily,” as some say. We miss each other and we care about each other, so, may we sing in virtual harmony… until the real thing comes along.
Baruch Koritan

MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT
We start the new year as we have done each year before with hopefully a clean slate. Our conscience is
clear we have forgiven and have been forgiven. Truly a blessing in and of itself.
We have seen that our beloved Temple Beth Shalom through our charitable contributions and Yom
Kippur giving will continue to survive for another year. We are comforted in this knowledge.
Our outreach during the High Holiday season and the response that we were given to our open- door
policy brought us great rewards. We have met and inspired many new people in our neighborhood who
hopefully have found as well that Temple Beth Shalom exists for their benefit and they will join our family
during the coming year. We await them.
Our children are back in school under the direction of Andre Ivory and Rabbi Kaplan. The teaching staff
is hard at work as well with the supporters of the school to see that even during these trying times of the virus
that the education of our children, in the goodness of our religion, is of paramount importance. We will survive.
Unfortunately, at the present time we cannot see an end to the scourge of the virus and how it has
affected our Temple family to gather. We have prepared a plan to, at some future time, to begin sanctuary
celebrations but must await a decision to be made when it can be safely implemented. The initial plan is for a
few to attend and then as it becomes safer to increase the ability to have our membership attend. We monitor
the situation.
Fortunately, we have found the means for our Congregation in the meantime to be together if only
online or on the phone. We have instilled in our members the need to continue to remain close and to
communicate the best that we can by phone, skype, facetime, zoom to name just a few. Text messaging has
become an artform with emoji’s doting our texts. In addition, we have found ways to continue our education,
skills, commitments, and socialization through online activities. May they continue to grow in numbers and
ways.
The season is upon us when we as a nation are called upon to make one of the most important decisions
of our lives, how and who will govern us during the next four years. As you know our Temple has been
historically neutral in that regard but this year of all years it is important that we all exercise our right to make
this decision and enforce it by making sure that we vote and that our vote is counted. Therefore, if you need
help, not in choosing who to vote for, but in exercising that right, let us know and we will help you file that
decision whether in person or by mail. Vote for the future of the country by November 3.
Above all, I as President and for the Board, thank everyone in advance for doing what will be necessary
this year, join in when called upon or volunteer, to help our Temple sustain its membership, grow its
membership and perform Tikkun Olam for another year. We will all be blessed.

BIBLICAL GARDEN UPDATE
“On the first day you shall take the fruit of majestic trees, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook; and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days.” Leviticus 23:40
Sukkot begins at sundown on October 2 through October 9. Four species of plants are taken in hand and
waved during the holiday prayers. These plants are in our Biblical Garden. You will see the identifying plaques as
you walk around the Garden.
Etrog is a yellow citron with a bumpy surface. We have two etrog trees in the Garden, one near the front
door of the Temple and one next to the pomegranate trees. Currently there is no fruit on them but as the stars
of the Garden these “majestic” trees get special attention so we will have fruit in the future.
One of the two etrog trees was donated by Jeannie Green in 2016 in honor of her daughter Addison.
Lulav is the closed date palm frond. We have several palm trees other than date palms which predate the
Garden.
Hadass is the myrtle plant. Our myrtle bushes are located on 101st Avenue by the entrance to the rear
driveway.
Aravah is the willow tree. We have a member of the willow family by the rear driveway.
Our Temple sukkah will probably not be used for gatherings this year. Please come celebrate Sukkot with
a walk around the Biblical Garden.
