A MESSAGE FROM RABBI KAPLAN

Reform Jewish Outreach

Fay and I are both writing about Reform Judaism Outreach this month because it is so important. Outreach refers to the organizational and educational efforts by the Reform Movement to reach those potentially interested in Judaism and invite them into our Temple. We want to be inclusive and welcome all people who sincerely are seeking a spiritual path to religious wisdom. Reform Judaism's commitment to outreach and inclusion, both of Jews–by–choice and interfaith and multi–cultural families, is a core Reform Jewish value. The early pioneers of liberal Judaism – throughout the world --were embracing thinkers who sought to stress the universal message of our Torah and biblical prophets, teaching that the Torah's ethical ideals were meant to embrace all people. I wrote about Outreach in one of my books, so I know it well. Reform Outreach was first proposed by Rabbi Alexander M. Schindler, then president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC), the congregational arm of Reform Judaism in North America, at a meeting of the organization's Board of Trustees on December 2, 1978 in Houston, Texas. Speaking at the UAHC Biennial, Rabbi Schindler urged Reform congregations to intensify their educational programs to do "everything possible to draw into Jewish life the non-Jewish spouse of a mixed marriage." Rabbi Schindler believed that everyone could gain wisdom from Judaism. He called on the Reform Movement "to launch a carefully conceived Outreach Program aimed at all Americans who are unchurched and who are seeking roots in religion." He envisioned a "dignified and responsible approach" aimed at "those reared in non-religious homes or those who have become disillusioned with their taught beliefs, the seekers after truth who require a religion which . . . encourages all questions, and. . . who need the warmth and comfort of a people well known for its close family ties and of an ancient, noble lineage." Rabbi Richard Jacobs, the current president of the Union for Reform Judaism, has strongly affirmed Outreach. "We practice Outreach," he told delegates at the 2013 URJ Biennial "because it is good for the Jewish people." Rabbi Jacobs urged Reform temples to practice what he termed "audacious hospitality," because "the majority of [millennials] will be the children of intermarriag-es, and potentially our leaders.” We are not sure what he means by “audacious” but I think we all agree we at Temple Beth Shalom are friendly and welcoming! We want to now reach out and bring in new people who can benefit from the teachings of Judaism and can become part of our welcoming community!!! Are you ready and will you help us? I am happy to report that your Temple officers and Board is off and running this year.

We are planning an exciting year with programs for everyone. Speakers, concerts, Shabbat

dinners, and much more. We are so proud of the membership’s response to Rabbi Kaplan.

Our summer Shabbat services are now happening with a full staff and a large attendance

each week. It has been a pleasure to see the number of people who want this experience and

the fact that we can now offer this extension. We thank not only Rabbi Kaplan but our

Cantor Koritan and Beverly Fletcher for making summer services that we can all be proud

of.

Plans are being made for a speaker program which will include participating in the

educational speakers brought in by Valley Bet Midrash. We are looking to have a scholar in

residence weekend as well.

High Holidays will be fast approaching and plans are being made to continue the

excellent services that we have had in the past with Rabbi Moss. Spread the word with your

friends and neighbors that they should share the holidays with us.

Plans are also being made to celebrate our 50th anniversary in the valley. Our

membership and outreach committees are forming and will be working hard to increase our

membership this year.

While the heat is on this month, think of various ways that you can contribute to the

success of our programs. What committees would you like to work on? What events would

you like to help with? We cannot succeed unless we have full participation from our

membership. It is important that we recognize that at Temple Beth Shalom we stand out

from the rest because “we are a family”. We are all part of the Temple’s expanded family.

Let’s make plans for a special effort on everyone’s part to spread the word in our

community that we are inclusive.

The word for this year is “volunteer”. Help us make your experience at Temple Beth

Shalom this year a success for your personal as well as Temple growth. Join Brotherhood,

Sisterhood and Parenthood. Plan on joining in their activities.

Finally, we are always open to suggestions on how to improve your Temple experience. Let us hear from you. Enjoy the heat and we look forward to seeing you for Shabbat services during August where you can socialize with your Temple family at the ice

cream Oneg following the service.

NOTES FROM CANTOR KORITAN

“Life’s sweetest reward” is often so obvious that it can be overlooked. I still am awed and humbled with leading the songs on the bimah -- even though I wanted to do just that since I was a child. Along the way, however, I sang in many venues and styles. It is truly a marvel to me how many composers and lyricists have been able to express the same ideas we venerate on the bimah through other milieus. So many of our Broadway and Hollywood geniuses use popular vernacular and current musical styles to convey lofty ideas and directives, echoing our Biblical teachings. Many of the creative people are, themselves, worthy of admiration. I quote Paul Williams, the diminutive lyricist of the title song of TV’s, “Love Boat:” ‘Love, life’s sweetest reward, let it flow, it floats back to you.’ When I met him here in Arizona, several years after having sung his song every night as a band leader on the ship where, “Love Boat, was filmed, I confronted him gently: “You’re not really that short. Why do you always call attention to how short you are?” He answered me that he says it to help other people who are self-conscious about being short and makes them feel better. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II wrote, “South Pacific,” the musical, based on Pulitzer Prize winning short stories of James Michener about his experiences in World War II. One of the stories they wove into the musical’s plot was about a Philadelphian Officer, who falls in love with a beautiful young Polynesian. He experiences prejudice from his co-workers and has misgivings about his own family’s stance and social position. In Act Two, Lt. Cable eventually capitulates and sings, “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught,” a virtual anthem dispelling hatred that only lives because it is propagated by our parents when we are still innocent children. The producers of the forthcoming Broadway show pleaded with the artistic team, which also included Josh Logan, to remove the song. The show had enough fine songs and intriguing material without risking financial disaster with an overtly ‘liberal’ song (“You’ve got to be taught to be afraid of people whose eyes are oddly made and people whose skin is a different shade”). Their response was that if you take that out of the show, the whole book would be futile. The entire story is about acceptance and love. Nellie from Arkansas, a WAC nurse, falls for a European widower, only to find out that his late wife was a native islander Polynesian and that he has two French-Asian children. Before the final curtain, she realizes that she was prejudiced. That flaw could have cost her happiness. The show was a success in 1949, despite its stance. The movie, released in 1958, also retained the necessarily preachy song. Some movie theaters in the southern United States either cut Cable’s ‘blaming’ song or chose not to show the movie at all. The film did well at the box office and garnered many honors. Creativity, I believe, does come with a price. One must strive to inspire, or our creative juices will expire. We are indubitably renewed by listening to the many sounds as imagined by our Creator and proliferated as our legacy. Simply put, as Oscar Hammerstein II wrote for his last show in 1959: “My heart will be blessed with the sound of music and I’ll sing once more.”

REFORM JEWISH OUTREACH

Over fifty years ago, Reform Jewish leaders became increasingly concerned about the diminishing Jewish

population throughout the world in general, and in North America in particular. The combination of

declining birth rates, intermarriage and assimilation was, and continues to be, cause for serious concern. In

the 1970’s, in response to the challenges that intermarriage has created in the Jewish community, the

Reform Movement, under the leadership of Rabbi Alexander Schindler, initiated the UAHC/CCAR

Commission on Reform Jewish Outreach.

While we have historically recognized the centrality of the synagogue and Jewish education for Jewish

survival, today there continues to be a third essential ingredient necessary for Reform Jewish survival –

Outreach. As a result of the work of this commission, Reform Jewish Outreach was defined and charged

with reaching out to “communities” of persons who could be critical to the challenge of a potentially

shrinking Jewish community. Judaism is a wonderful religion, culture, and peoplehood that brings out the

best in humanity and offers to all of us as individuals an infinite amount of wisdom and support for our

daily lives. Through outreach efforts, we are able to share what Judaism brings to the world and our daily

lives.

These communities include people in interfaith romantic relationships, intermarried couples, and children

of intermarriages to learn more about Judaism. Outreach to these populations is not intended to disregard

or diminish the importance of the religious or secular beliefs of the partners of Jewish members of our

congregations. Rather outreach efforts are designed to provide programs and opportunities for these

families that will enable them to understand the basics of Judaism, to make them feel welcome and a part of

our congregation, and to fully participate in temple and family activities.

Other important elements of Reform Jewish Outreach is to identify and bring unaffiliated born Jews back

into Judaism and our congregation and to welcome and integrate new “Jews by Choice” into synagogue life

and Jewish peoplehood.

The Board of Directors of Temple Beth Shalom (TBS) has made a conscious decision to initiate outreach

programs at TBS, beginning in the fall of 2019. To this end, I was asked by the Board of Directors to

organize an Outreach Committee which, in conjunction with the Rabbi and temple leadership, will develop

programs and activities directed at our interfaith families, new Jews-by-Choice, unaffiliated Jews in the

west valley, and other individuals interested in learning more about Judaism.

Later this month, information will be provided to our membership about the new Outreach Committee,

including a “call for volunteers” to serve on the committee. It is our hope that some of the non-Jewish

partners of our Jewish members, along with our Jewish members, will step forward and volunteer to serve

on this very important committee.

Edith Mattal Memorial Library

IN MEMORY OF LARRY A. MATTAL For all of you who didn’t know Larry Mattal, you missed out on having a wonderful friend. Larry was a long time member of TBS who loved our Synagogue. As you can tell from the title of my article every month, Larry dedicated our library in his wife’s memory. With his support and dedication we have been able to purchase new furniture and lots of new books over the last few years. I met Larry and Russ 6 years ago when I moved to AZ and began volunteering in the library. I think his beautiful speaking voice really got to me. He could have been great on the radio or doing commercials on TV. Every Yom Kippur morning he would read the Haftorah with such feeling that I was mesmerized listening to him. And, at our Passover Seder, he had a special part to read as well. No one will ever be able to read these parts with as much feeling as he did. Larry and I had many great and long personal visits. We spent time talking about his teaching career, family events, as well as other things. My heart is so sad and I will miss him more than I can put into words. Rest in peace my dear friend. I will never forget you and will always love you. For the summer, the library and the office is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and before and after Shabbat Services on Fridays. Our summer hours will end in the fall when we will be back full-time Monday through Friday. Please come and take advantage of our beautiful library. There are many interesting, informative and fun books to read for all ages. I hope you all have a very happy, cool and safe summer.

This is Sisterhood's major fundraiser. We use it to make donations to local food banks, but the major portion is given to our temple whenever a need arises, such as a copier, a computer and new kitchen appliances such as a refrigerator and dishwasher. photocopy information, file, type, or staple – WE NEED YOU!!! Nice office with

Also needed: * Front Desk Reception Friday Nights from 6:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

* Key Committee people to help open and close the building

* Additional people to be on the Emergency Call List to respond to the occasional off hours alarms

As most of you know, the success of Temple Beth Shalom has always been

dependent on the efforts of our dedicated volunteers. Within the next twelve months

there will be openings on the board for nearly all positions. Please don’t wait to be

asked! Schedules can be flexible and you will have the satisfaction of contributing to the

Temple Beth Shalom invites you to participate in the life of our congregation by being a volunteer. Every successful congregation has special people who give of their time and talent. While we are grateful for financial contributions, we are equally grateful for the dedicated volunteers who offer their valuable time and energy. To volunteer, to be active, is the way to meet people and be part of our Jewish family community.

Jewish Seniors need your help! As you know, the Friedel Family Foundation Senior Transportation

Fund was generously established by Alan and Randi Jablin to provide transportation for Jewish adults over

the age of 65 who are no longer able to drive themselves.

Last Week, the Jewish Federation boosted the available funds for this program by $58,000.

We are reaching out to the religious leaders in the community to help spread the word so that every Senior

in need of this service is aware of the program. Please help us reach every Senior in your congregation and

community that needs help getting around and with activities of daily living outside the home.

As Mrs. R told us, “The program is a gift to the Jewish Seniors of the Phoenix area. I can now schedule my

doctor appointments on my own schedule and not have to depend on someone else to take me as a favor. Thank

you very much to the underwriters of this wonderful program”.

All the rides are provided through Envoy America, a company that provides accompanied ride services and

companionship for Seniors. The Envoy America team will assist the Senior from their home to the car and help as

needed during the trip. Seniors can travel with friends or other Seniors at no additional cost.

The cost of a ride for the Senior will be only $5.00, $10.00 or whatever the Senior is comfortable paying.

Rides can be used for any purpose. For example, to go to Jewish events, the theater, a doctor appointment, grocery

store, visit family members or friends, or other destinations. For a home bound Senior, or one with limited mobility

options, the chance to get out and about can be a life changing event.

This program is now available all across the Valley—from Sun City and Glendale to Apache Junction—from

Cave Creek to Chandler. But it only works if the word is out! We need your help!

To schedule a ride, a Senior or family member simply needs to call Envoy America at (602) 687-6345 and

mention the Friedel Transportation Fund or Smile on Seniors. Rides should be scheduled at least 24 hours in

advance.
