IF YOU HAVE BEEN IN MY OFFICE, you will have noticed three posters on the wall. My grandmother used them to teach Hebrew 50 years ago, both here at Temple Beth-El and other places she worked. They serve as a reminder that while she was a visionary in her time for Hebrew instruction, we have come a long way. The latest research has dramatically changed the way we teach in the world of Jewish education, particularly Hebrew instruction. I am proud to say that our new approach has been highly successful. At the Rabbi Leslie Yale Gutterman Religious School, the goal of our Hebrew curriculum is for our children to become Shabbat literate. We strive to have our students excited about and engaged in their Hebrew studies. We want our students to see Hebrew as a living language and provide them with a solid foundation in reading and decoding. Our hope is that they become comfortable enough in the language to participate in Jewish prayer and Jewish life.We accomplishs this through multiple layers of learning which start in PreK and continue throughout their entire student journey.Hebrew through Movement is a program that allows students to learn Hebrew by hearing and responding to commands. It introduces the language in a playful and meaningful way, creating an aural foundation and positive connection to Hebrew. Students in PreK to Grade 4 have Hebrew through Movement for 15 minutes every Sunday.Jewish life vocabulary teaches our students key words and phrases like shalom, mazel tov, tikkun olam and more. This allows our students to connect Hebrew to Jewish values. Students hear these words in their classrooms each week.Tefilah (prayer service) offers students an opportunity to build community while learning the prayers meaningfully. Our students meet in age appropriate cohorts (PreK-Grade 3, Grades 4-7 and Grades 8-10) most Sundays, and periodically together at All School Tefilah. The best way to learn is participation with support of clergy, songleaders and peers.K’tantan Shabbat allows our youngest congregants to experience Hebrew in an age-appropriate experiential Shabbat.Family Shabbat allows students in PreK-Grade 6 to lead Shabbat for the congregation on a Friday night. Each grade prepares with clergy and songleaders to express how they interpret different prayers, in addition to leading us in the Kabbalat Shabbat service.Kabbalat Siddur is a ceremony we hold for our 4th grade students when they receive their own personal siddur. This consecrates the beginning of their studies in our Small Group Hebrew program that will take them through their B’nei Mitzvah.Small Group Hebrew allows students starting in Grade 4 to meet weekly in groups no larger than five students for an hour to master the alef bet, decode Hebrew words and learn the prayers that will allow them to lead us in worship in celebration of them becoming b’nei mitzvah. B’nei Mitzvah Preparation begins in earnest approximately one year before a student’s celebration. They migrate into a special Small Group Hebrew session with our clergy and with b’nei mitzvah tutors where they continue to polish their prayers, learn Torah trope and prepare a d’var Torah.In the three years since we started teaching Hebrew this way, we have seen a major improvement in our students’ confidence, peer support and overall love of learning Hebrew. I look forward to collaborating and exchanging ideas with my colleagues across the country to insure the best practices for our continued progress.

TU B’SHEVAT Trees and Judaism

TU B’SHEVAT, once a very minor observance, has become a important celebration in the Jewish calendar. Today, the holiday is celebrated with its own seder, the most positive expression of celebration in the Jewish lexicon.

Tu B’Shevat literally means the fifteenth day of Shevat. It is not mentioned in the Torah, yet where the Talmud describes it as “the new year of the trees,” it mandates no rituals, no blessings and no synagogue observance.

Historically, Tu B’Shevat was a way of maintaining a connection with the land of Israel - a hot, arid place where trees are the essence of life, providing food, shade and water. In Israel, during the month of Shevat, the winter rains end and the first signs of spring appear, renewing the trees. The only observance of Tu B’Shevat among Askenazi Jews was the eating of fruits, especially those grown in Israel.

Beginning in the 1970s, American Jews rediscovered the Tu B’Shevat seder, which originated in the 16th century. Modeled after the Pesach seder, it featured four cups of wine and much eating of fruit, along with singing and praying.

The modern focus for Tu B’Shevat has broadened to include the relationships between people and the natural world. In Jewish tradition, the primary symbol of this relationship is the tree. The Torah itself is called a tree of life and the rollers around which the scrolls are wrapped are also called trees of life, atzei hayim.

The planting of trees was seen as a holy activity. According to Rabbi Yohonan ben Zakkai, if you are holding a seedling in your hand and someone says, “Look, here comes the Messiah!” you should first plant the seedling, then go see the Messiah. The Torah forbids the cutting down of an enemy’s fruit trees in times of war, even if trees are needed to siege a city.

The ancient Jewish reverence of trees combined with and the modern concern for our world’s forests and other natural resources gives us new opportunities for the observance of Tu B’Shevat.

ROSH HODESH SHEVAT Rosh Hodesh Shevat is Monday, January 27. Shevat is the month when the very first trees in the State of Israel begin to bud and bloom; a reminder of the rebirth and beauty of the land, and our responsibility as God’s partners to care for and appreciate it. The holiday of Tu B’Shevat, the 15th of Shevat (when the moon is full) reminds us of this sacred obligation and gives us the opportunity to plant seeds and trees that will grow here and in Israel.

ROSH HODESH ADAR Rosh Hodesh Adar is Tuesday, February 25. Look for the new moon Monday night. In Adar we celebrate Purim, a time when storytelling, costumes, sweet treats, special drinks and general frivolity help reveal the blessings hidden in the world around us. Our tradition teaches, “when the month of Adar begins, we increase our joy.” This new month is an opportunity to uncover and increase the blessings of hope and happiness, love and laughter in our lives and in the world through our words and actions.

BROTHERHOOD OFF TO A STRONG START TO 2019-2020• Your Brotherhood was proud to receive the first MRJ (Men of

Reform Judaism) annual Stuart Aaronson Award for Best Program for our Men’s Seder Hagaddah

• In September, Providence Police Chief Clements shared his security expertise during our Stuart Aaronson Memorial Breakfast

• In October, more than 50 Temple members enjoyed the live interactive Murder Mystery Dinner “Killing Hamilton” with special cast appearances by our very own Rabbi Howard and Rabbi Sarah all feasting on Katz deli items

• In November, Brotherhood joined Sisterhood to prepare a home-made chicken dinner for families staying at Ronald McDonald House

• Continuing into December and every Sunday during religious school, parents, students, teachers, clergy, and visiting guests enjoy our re-vamped Bagel Café atmosphere, menu, bistro-style tables, soft comfy chairs, quiet room for working and a few surprises coming in 2020.

IN RECOGNITION OF THE SPECIAL HISTORIC PLACE of Temple Beth-El in our families’ lives and in the life of our community, the Board of Directors established The Temple Beth-El Legacy Society about 10 years ago. For the past 165 years, our Temple has passed on Jewish values from generation to generation. How moving to see confirmands enter the sanctuary. How meaningful to witness the Bar or Bat Mitzvah of a child whose parents were married in Temple Beth-El. How significant for a grandchild to pay honor to a beloved grandparent at a time of grief. How energizing to gather as long-time Beth-Elder friends and view the next generation in our holiday festivities, religious school, youth groups and youth choir. We are truly a multi-gener-ational congregation with a strong and meaningful legacy.

THANKS TO GENEROUS DONATIONS from the Winkler Children’s Library Fund and Temple Beth-El Sisterhood, the Children’s Reading Room in the Braude Library opened this autumn. With his creative eye and careful direction, Temple Beth-El’s Building Manager George Hetu oversaw the renovation of an unused office into a beautiful and welcoming space. He and his team removed an unused desk, file cabinets and shelving that had once blocked windows. They built child-sized benches and acces-sible shelving for books and installed new carpeting. Thanks to handiwork, the sunny and spacious Children’s Reading Room provides Religious School students and teachers to read together during Religious School and welcomes families browsing for books to check out and read at home. Please stop by on a Sunday or whenever Temple Beth-El is open to see the Children’s Reading Room; it’s a wonderfully welcoming space for the young and the young-at-heart.

Reuven Firestone is the Regenstein Professor in Medieval Judaism and Islam at Hebrew Union College, Los Angeles and a� liate professor of religion at the University of Southern California. Author of eight books and more than 100 scholarly articles on Judaism, Islam, their relationship with one another and with Christianity, and phenomenology of religion, Professor Firestone lectures at universities in Europe, Asia and the Middle East as well as throughout North America. He is active on the boards of numerous scholarly journals and boards and commissions treating interreligious relations and dialogue. An ordained rabbi, Firestone received his Ph.D. in Arabic and Islamic Studies from New York University, served as Vice President for Program of the Association for Jewish Studies and as President of the International Qur’anic Studies Association.

Ruth H. Sohn is a rabbi, spiritual director and writer based in Los Angeles. She directs the Spirituality Initiative and the Arono� Rabbinic Mentoring program at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles and teaches adults in local and national venues. Her articles, Biblical commentary, midrash and poetry have appeared in various anthologies and periodicals, including � e Torah: A Women’s Commentary and Chapters of the Heart: Jewish Women Sharing the Torah of our Lives, ed. by Sue Levi Elwell and Nancy Fuchs Kreimer. In Crossing Cairo: A Jewish Woman’s Encounter with Egypt, Rabbi Sohn shares her compelling personal story of living in Egypt with her family in 2006, and explores the question of what it means to genuinely listen to the “other’s” narrative and use it as a lens for examining one’s own.

Tomer also feels that he has learned a lot of self discipline through the process of B’nei Mitzvah, as no one but himself is forcing him to practice his Torah portion. “As Paula, my B’nei Mitzvah tutor, reminds me, ‘You have to want it more than I do, ...and I want it a whole lot!!!!’”
