Charter CommentaryCharter overview:The Charter allows the team to set and communicate specific parameters of the project. While a centerpiece for many experienced Project Managers, small details are easy to overlook.

Why use & benefits:When used properly, the Charter guides the entire project. The tool allows a clear summary of the problem, the vision, key stakeholders, and scope. By utilizing the Charter in the ideation process or early in the Scoping phase, uncertainty and conflicting opinions on project direction are avoided.

How to use:The Project Manager along with the Sponsor of the work effort can draft a version of the Charter. As a project team is identified and allocated, a review and refinement of Charter elements is appropriate. The content of a Charter may change as the team works in the Scoping, Diagnostic, and Development phases.

CICoaches.com perspectiveA Charter is commonplace in the continuous improvement world. Remember to be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely) in the Problem & Vision statements. Avoid completing the Charter and filing it away. Projects encounter new and unforeseen developments throughout their lifecycle. Be sure to revisit and refine (if appropriate) your Charter often.
