Yes, I liked the book. My favorite part was the bet between

the main characters Amanda and Jake (the bet was who could ride Jake’s horse better).

Amanda scared Jake by pretending she didn’t know how to ride a horse.

Jake got mad but apologized by taking Amanda back home on his horse.

I would tell a friend that this is a good book if they like action and romance.

The main characters are Amanda and Jake. Amanda lives in Lockwood, Pennsylvania,

but is visiting Clark Island. She meets Jake who is close to her age, but is deaf.

Their first encounter is a bit awkward, since Amanda doesn’t understand Jake’s situation, she acts hostile towards him.

Soon, however, they become buddies.

Amanda vs. Jake – Amanda and Jake have conflict with conversing due to Jake being deaf.

Todd and Eric (Amanda’s younger half-brothers) meet Jake and Jake teaches them how to sign.

Jake and Amanda have a bet to see who can ride Jake’s horse better (it ends in a draw).

When Amanda and Jake go clamming, Amanda loses her ring. Jake finds it when Amanda isn’t looking, and keeps it for a while.

When Jake returns the ring, Amanda is overwhelmed with joy and cries into Jakes shoulders. Jake kisses Amanda right then and there.

Amanda’s boyfriend Christopher King comes to visit for a few weeks. He has changed since Amanda last saw him and is no longer the boy she once thought he was.

One day, Jake and Amanda use Jake’s ship, the Runaway, to check Jake’s lobster traps. When they head home, a storm gets them and they fall off the boat.

Amanda successfully contacts the harbormaster.

Help comes and Jake and Amanda are safe.

They talk about the nightmare in Jake’s stall while he grooms his horse, Lightning.

Amanda and Jake go on a “real” date.

They dance together to the music being played at a party at a marina.

They go back to the beach. Amanda tells Jake she will come back sooner than or next summer, and they dance one last time under the moon.

Amanda Alden is a teenage girl (15 years old), has blonde hair of different shades and pretty blue eyes.

She is persistent and never gives up. Jake Hackett is a teenage boy (16

years old), has dark brown hair and dark brown eyes.

He is deaf and very confident, although Amanda’s refusal to give up makes him self-conscious.

Todd and Eric are Amanda’s half-brothers.

They are both much younger than Amanda, and on occasion they encounter Jake and ask him how to sign different objects.

Amanda hates to admit it, but having Todd and Eric around helps ease the tension between her and Jake.

Amanda and her family are visiting Clark Island. On the third day of her visit she sees Jake Hackett, a clammer and lobster catcher. Their first encounter is a bit awkward, as Amanda doesn’t know that Jake is deaf. They go their separate ways but bump into each other again at Pilgrim Rock near the center of a forest.

Page 17: Tell Me How the Wind Sounds Book By: Leslie D. Guccione Presentation By: David B. Ayscue, Jr

In the forest Jake is able to explain to Amanda that he is deaf. Amanda is really embarrassed by this point. All she wants is to be at home with her boyfriend Christopher King.

Amanda then decides to go visit Jake. She finds him in his barn brushing his horse, Lightning.

Page 18: Tell Me How the Wind Sounds Book By: Leslie D. Guccione Presentation By: David B. Ayscue, Jr

Amanda feeds Lightning a carrot and refills her feeding trough. Then Amanda and Jake exchange their names and have a short conversation. It isn’t much, but it is a step forward toward their friendship.

The next day Amanda takes her half-brothers out to the beach. When she fixes them lunch, Jake is with the brothers.

Jake teaches the brothers how to sign a few things. It helps ease the tension between Amanda and Jake. When Jake leaves, it leaves a void. Amanda wanted to converse with him longer.

Amanda’s parents approve of Jake, saying they are glad there is another person around Amanda’s age on the island.

Amanda and her brothers visit Jake’s family. Jake’s parents are not deaf, so it is easier to communicate with them. Amanda and company leave before Jake arrives.

Amanda’s family goes to the mainland to check out ancestral stuff, shop, and to collect mail.

After Amanda learns a little more sign language, she and Jake make a bet on who can rides Jake’s horse better.

Amanda wants a saddle, but Jake interprets it as “Amanda can’t ride a horse” and gets extremely worried.

Amanda can ride fine, Jake gets mad but takes her home anyway.

Jake and Amanda go clamming. During this time, she loses her ring from her boyfriend, Christopher King.

Jake finds it away from Amanda and keeps it for a while.

Eventually Jake returns the ring, and Amanda is overcome with joy. Jake kisses Amanda right then and there.

Page 23: Tell Me How the Wind Sounds Book By: Leslie D. Guccione Presentation By: David B. Ayscue, Jr

Amanda’s parents arrange for Christopher King to come visit. She tells this to Jake and orders him not to kiss her anymore. Jake teases her terribly, but he obeys.

Once Chris comes she introduces him to Jake. They each say hi and that’s it. Christopher spends more time looking and talking about other girls than he does Amanda. He isn’t the Christopher that Amanda remembers.

Page 24: Tell Me How the Wind Sounds Book By: Leslie D. Guccione Presentation By: David B. Ayscue, Jr

Once Chris leaves, Amanda returns to Jake again. She discusses her sadness about how Chris has changed. She wants to talk with Jake more, so he takes her along in his boat Runaway to check his traps. They talk some, but on the way home a storm starts brewing. Amanda and Jake have to work together to save themselves

Page 25: Tell Me How the Wind Sounds Book By: Leslie D. Guccione Presentation By: David B. Ayscue, Jr

Amanda and Jake successfully contact the harbormaster before the boat overturns and help comes. They are escorted to Jake’s house and are nursed back to health. Amanda and Jake agree that they saved each other. They agree to spend the rest of the summer together as well.

Amanda and Jake go on a “real” date. They go to a marina party and Jake reluctantly agrees to dance with Amanda. Jake then realizes most of the other guys aren’t so good at dancing either! After the party they head down to the beach. Amanda tells Jake she will come sooner than or next summer. They dance one last time under the full August moon.
