origin and characteristics o f both classes of Turkestan art were forgotten. However, docu­ments o f the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth centuries are explicit and clearly indicate the two Turkestan culture zones.3 Through the revival o f ancient Turkestan religions brought about the Manichean Kara-Khata i rule and by the M o n g o l invasion, important works o f art of figurative character and of Buddhist and Manichean inspiration were produced, in East­ern Turkestan, u n t i l the twelfth century and probably later. The migrat ion o f the Seljuk Turks introduced characteristics o f this art into the Near East.5
