• Many plastic items are mistaken as food by turtles when they end up in our waterways. Using reusable bags, straws and water bottles not only saves you money, but also helps protect our ecosystem.

• Litter on our beaches can be dangerous, especially to the 68,000 loggerhead turtles that nest on our coasts annually. Make it a goal to pick up any litter you find when having a beach day.

• Give nesting turtles plenty of space and never disturb a nest if you come across one. If you’re fortunate enough to see sea turtles hatching, maintain your distance and turn off all lights from your portable electronic devices.

• Having a turtle as a pet is a lasting commitment not just for you, but for the turtle. Only take responsibility for one if you have a long-term plan. Many unwanted turtles are released into the wild and cannot survive on their own.

to learn how you can be a friend to more than 30 species of turtles that call Florida home! With these little reptiles

being a staple of our lakes and oceans, it’s easy to forget how turtley remarkable they really are. Can you believe

some of your neighborhood turtles could possibly be older than you? These tough creatures may have shells made

of over 50 bones, but they still need our help to survive. With 61% of freshwater turtle species and nearly all sea

turtle species endangered, it’s up to us to take some easy steps to protect our favorite semi-aquatic neighbors.

The Chelonian Research Institute, Sea Turtle Preservation Society, The Central Florida Wildlife Center and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee are great community partners for anyone who wants to learn more about Florida’s turtles and what we can be doing to help save them. Visit some Florida turtles and tortoises in NatureWorks the next time you’re at Orlando Science Center!

InspiringTomorrow’s Space ExplorersThis summer we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing. It’s been five decades since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first set foot on the lunar surface and it remains one of humankind’s greatest achievements. Orlando Science Center in particular was born out of the space race. In the fifties and early sixties, the space race was heating up at Cape Canaveral and our institution was launched to reinforce the importance of science learning and encourage young people to reach for the stars.

Inspiring curious minds has always been at the forefront of our mission. As we look to the future with a return to the moon and a staffed mission to Mars, Orlando Science Center’s role in promoting science literacy and encouraging future space explorers has never been more important. We have a number of exciting programs planned to commemorate the anniversary of setting foot on the moon, and we are using this milestone to ignite curiosity and initiate discussion.

If you’re looking to honor the Apollo missions this summer, I encourage you to include Orlando Science Center in your plans. On July 20 and 21, we will host our big celebration, Moon Fest, a collection of live shows, films, and activities that will thrill all ages. Enjoy themed activities in Dr. Dare’s Lab and The Hive: A Makerspace, including making your own lunar colony or creating a constellation using LED lights. Our Flight Lab will host a Virtual Reality astronaut flight experience, and you can see the new giant screen documentary, Apollo 11, in the Dr. Phillips CineDome. You can also see the Neil Armstrong biography, First Man, in the Digital Adventure Theater, plus a 3D documentary on space junk.

Central Florida has an important connection to the space race and Orlando Science Center is honored to be part of that legacy. This summer gives us a great opportunity to share the story of the moon landing as we all prepare for what comes next. The astronauts who will walk on Mars one day are currently in elementary school, which means one of them could be exploring our exhibits right now.

It is the duty of every science center to ensure that our experiences launch visitors on a journey to find their true potential. By presenting activities designed to encourage skill building, creativity and critical thinking, science centers are supporting formal education and helping propel people on a journey that could lead all the way to the cosmos. The sky is no longer the limit.

SCIENCE IN OUR LIVES

Just over a year ago, Orlando Science Center, in a partnership with the Office of Naval Research, revealed a revolutionary new exhibit to kick off Otronicon v.13. Since then, the Flight Lab has “trained” more than 5,000 guests, with real flight simulations. As a steadfast supporter of Orlando Science Center since its inception, Lockheed Martin recently donated the latest version of their simulation software, Prepar3d, to commemorate the one year anniversary of our Flight Lab.

Referred to by a recent guest as “the best exhibit in the building,” the Flight Lab allows visitors to virtually climb into the cockpit and learn how to fly, navigate, communicate and collaborate. Each of the 13 stations use an Oculus Rift head-mounted display unit to provide a fully immersive flight experience. Various missions and tasks teach guests and students critical skills in aviation and engineering.

Flight Lab creates a fun and engaging learning experience for our visitors. Inspirational real-world mission scenarios teach STEM concepts and develop critical communication, decision-making, and team building. Developed as an experience for ages 13 and up, the Flight Lab is one recent effort on behalf of Orlando Science Center to further cultivate our older youth and adult audience.

Last summer, the Science Center launched an aviation-themed camp called “Aviation Adventures.” This program, with support from a Jet Blue grant, provided need-based free tuition to 13 girls from local area Title I middle and high

schools. “Our hope is that this program inspires people to pursue STEM and aviation-related opportunities in both their education and their careers,” said JoAnn Newman, president and CEO of Orlando Science Center.

Lockheed Martin’s donation of this upgraded software continues to enable the Science Center to provide cutting-edge learning experiences for older youth and adults during STEM-

focused programming and special events. Orlando Science Center is immensely grateful to have received this donation from Lockheed Martin so our visitors and students can use the same flight training software that is used to teach real pilots. Turtle Power! After three decades of battling evil and exemplifying teamwork, the beloved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) will make waves this summer at Orlando Science Center! The four funny “heroes in a half shell” will share life lessons, team-building skills, and their crime-fighting tactics in Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles™: Secrets of the Sewer™. Be transported to the underground home of the crime-fighting heroes to see what really happens in their secret hideaway. Meet TMNT brothers Leonardo (the tactical, courageous leader in blue), Michelangelo (the free-spirited jokester in orange), Raphael (the tough guy in red), and Donatello (the scientist and technological genius in purple) as they invite you to their New York City sewer lair to train and learn.

The Turtles are known and respected for their teamwork. As the TMNT’s sensei and adoptive father Splinter often tells them, “Together there is nothing you cannot accom-plish.” Through team-building challenges, collaborative games and mind-teasing puzzles, visitors will learn how to work as a team while completing mental and physical challenges like assembling electrical circuit puzzles, navigating a rope

maze, practicing ninja speed and slicing skills while playing a dexterity-based computer game, shredding up, and prac-ticing your balance on skateboards, and more!

So, put on your bandanas, eat a slice of pizza and get ready to work together to defeat evil! Whether you come with friends, family, or wannabe ninjas, you’ll put the strength of your teamwork and cooperation skills to the test. Your crew will be sure to walk away with a bond just as strong as the one between these supercool, super-powered heroes!

Lisa has been with Orlando Science Center for almost four years, and now oversees the Membership and Guest Services teams. Originally from the United Kingdom, she enjoys endless cups of tea, crying at This Is Us, and spending time with her two young children.

Originally from Michigan, Heaven came to Orlando as a member of AmeriCorps VISTA. Heaven has been the Member Relations Coor-dinator at OSC since September, overseeing our large Science for All membership program, as well as printing, managing and mailing out the membership cards for OSC members like you! You can even see Heaven interacting with the Central Florida community at events spreading the word about the Science Center.

Many of you may recognize Travis’ smiling face from the OSC Guest Services team. His favorite part of his new role as the Member Relations Lead is building relationships with our members and guests. When he’s not busy making membership magic, Travis enjoys gardening and working in his yard.

This is our third year as a finalist, and we know we could not have done it without the support and enthusiasm of our entire community. Being recognized by IMLS as a final-ist for the National Medal is just as much a celebration for all of Central Florida, as it is for Orlando Science Center. Promoting Learning Amongst Youth:

Lessons to learn in KidsTown

Orlando Science Center’s mission of inspiring science learning for life applies to even our youngest scientists! You may be all too familiar with the dreaded ‘Why?’ stage of childhood, and the under seven crowd are certainly capable of asking some real head-scratchers. We know that children have a natural curiosity, and nurturing that love of learning can help set them on a path for success.

In our early childhood exhibit, KidsTown, there are lessons to be learned everywhere. Here, we’ll explore some discussion topics that you can use to enhance the educational impact of your KidsTown visit. Even if you don’t know the exact answer to all of those inevitable ‘Why?’ questions, it’s valuable to talk about possibilities together. Children will see that, while grownups don’t have all the answers, you both can learn more about the world in which we live.

Here are some conversation starters for your time in KidsTown:

• At the sorting station, sort ripe and unripe oranges. How many ripe (orange) oranges do you count? How many unripe (green) oranges do you count? Are there more ripe or unripe oranges in our Orange Grove?• At the packing station, you can pull one lever at a time to move the oranges up the ramp. What do you think will happen if you pull two levers at once? What happens if you pull three or more at once? What do you notice?• The plants that we eat need a few things to grow big and healthy – can you think of anything that’s important for plants in a farm or garden to have? What do you think would happen if the plants didn’t have those things?

• Use the blue panels to create a path for the water. If we make a thin pathway, do you think the water will flow faster or slower? What if we make a wide pathway?• How do you think we can get the water to flow in a different direction? Are there any tools we can use? Let’s try that together and see what happens!• I’m noticing that some of the toys in this area float, and others sink. I wonder why that is. What do you think?

• Your heart does an important job in your body. Do you know what job your heart does?• Test your heart rate. What do you think will happen to your heartbeat as you climb and play?• Do you notice any differences in how your body feels after playing or working hard? VOLUNTEER THIS SCHOOL YEAR

Orlando Science Center is looking for students ages 13–17 (18 if still in high school) to support us in our mission to inspire science learning for life!

The Catalyst Youth Volunteer Program is a unique way for students to learn critical 21st century skills, such as collaboration, critical thinking and cultural awareness that are needed for them to navigate potential challenges they may face when entering college and our modern workforce. Through our Catalyst Youth Volunteer program, students become increasingly engaged and comfortable with STEM and workforce related skills they need to succeed.

During the school year we invite first-time applicants to join our Youth Event and Exhibit Hall Team. Students receive training to become knowledgeable about the content taught within our exhibits, and how to become effective communicators of scientific information to the museum’s 670,000+ visitors.

Along with volunteering, Orlando Science Center offers a premier teen engagement program. Catalyst Academy, Catalyst Internship, and Catalyst Scholars is a three-tiered program designed for teen development, supporting students ages 13-17. In the Catalyst Academy, students build STEM and 21-Century skills through a series of engaging workshops. Upon successful completion of the Academy, students are able to apply for the Catalyst Summer Internship where they gain enrichment with a deeper dive into project-based learning. Interns are exposed to a variety of STEM career options through collaborative mentoring teams at Orlando Science Center, research-based field trips through a partnership with UCF, and field trips to other community partners. The third tier, Catalyst Scholars, gives students the opportunity to focus on specific STEM content and how the Orlando Science Center engages our community through science education. Our mission in this endeavor is to build and strengthen the STEM career pipeline for the future.

DIRECTIONS1. To get started, find a space in your home that can get a little

messy or set up a work space outdoors.

2. Next, place the six clear cups in a row next to each other.

3. Fill each cup with ½ cup of vinegar.

4. Add 2 tablespoons of dish soap to each cup.

5. Stir with a spoon.

6. Now, add 1 tablespoon of liquid watercolor. (different colors for each cup)

7. Stir again with a spoon until combined.

8. Measure out 3 tablespoons of baking soda per cup and add baking soda to each cup.

9. Gently swirl to combine.

10. Watch as the colorful foam builds and overflows from the cups!

FREE EXTENDED CAREThe Science Center offers extended care from 7:30 – 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at no additional cost. A fee of $1.00 per minute is charged per camper/ per minute after 6:00 p.m.

REFUND & CANCELLATION POLICYCamps may be rescheduled for a $10.00 fee up to two times but no refunds will be processed for rescheduled camps. Refunds will only be issued on cancellation requests made two weeks prior to the start of your camp session. A 20% processing fee is deducted from all refunds. There are no partial refunds for missed days of class.

OPEN HOUSESaturday, May 11, 2019 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Parents will have an opportunity to ask questions, register for camp, meet camp staff and explore the classrooms.

WHY ARE CAMPS BROKEN DOWN BY GRADE LEVELS?Orlando Science Center Summer Camps have been designed to provide our campers with a fun, safe and developmentally appropriate program. To promote teamwork and provide the best experience for all campers, please register children for camps offered to the grade level they will enter in Fall 2019. OSC reserves the right to move campers into camps appropriate for their grade level.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF A CAMPERWe want every camper’s experience at camp to be positive and memorable. To provide that experience, campers should be able to:

• Move independently from place to place• Have effective interactions in our group-based environment

(ex. buddy systems, group projects, etc.)

• Take care of their own personal needs • Abide by the Camper Behavior Expectation Agreement

SEED, SOIL, SUN June 3 – 7 What do we need to have a garden grow? Can plants grow without soil or water? Let’s explore how we use different methods, tools and experiments to grow fruits, vegetables and plants in our world.

MIX IT UP! May 27 – 31 Prepare concoctions using a pinch of kitchen science and a dash of chemistry. Together, we will create all kinds of slimy, fizzy, colorful creations with everyday materials as we investigate solids, liquids and gases. Put your safety goggles on and get ready for messy fun.

INVISIBLE FORCES June 10 – 14 Join us as we investigate the science you can’t see – gravity, static electricity, magnetism and sound to name a few. Using simple machines, everyday objects, and STEM resources, we’ll explore and observe these invisible forces.

I’M A WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST June 17 – 21 Explore the different animals and their habitats that make up the wondrous world – planet Earth. Join the OSC wildlife team as we investigate similarities and differences in the ecosystems, collect data and use science tools. Don’t forget your binoculars and journal.

MOTHER GOOSE ON THE LOOSE June 25 – 29 Check out classic nursery rhymes and explore the science behind the stories… like what happened to Humpty Dumpty’s shell? After Jack and Jill went up a hill, why did they tumble down? And more!

OUR BIG BACKYARD July 8 – 12 Using binoculars, bird guides and other exploration tools, we’ll check out our big backyard and learn who shares our space. We’ll explore the environments of birds, insects, animals and plants and discover where they live, eat, and more!

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND July 1 – 5 Prepare to blast off as we venture into outer space with the stars, Sun, moon and planets. Buckle up in the OSC rocket ship as we count stars, explore constellations, journey to other planets and check out our own planet Earth.

MY BODYWORKS July 22 – 26 What would happen if we didn’t have any muscles or bones to support us? What’s under our fingernails or lives on our skin? Is our heart shaped like a heart? Along with our five senses, we will explore how our body works to keep us fit, healthy and together.

OH THE PLACES WE’LL GO! July 15 – 19 Ready, set, go! Working together we will set off on an adventure around the world using different modes of transportation, exploring the sights, sounds, natural wonders and cultures we encounter. Pack your passport and backpack for one exciting trip.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Northrop Grumman for their support of our Mobile Digital Planetarium. Bringing astronomy, the stars, and space directly to five Central Florida Title I schools and community centers has enabled Orlando Science Center Educators to reach youth from low-income families while educating, inspiring, and providing a stellar experience for more than 500 students and teachers. Orlando Science Center and the Early Learning Coalition of Osceola County have been chosen by the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation (OMYF) as recipients of their 2019 collaborative grant. Their generous award to our early childhood learning initiative, Ignite Discovery, will enable us to enhance STEM learning of young children from low-income households as we provide professional development training for early childhood teachers and caregivers over the course of three years. Community partners like OMYF that support important STEM learning programs, help contribute to a more equitable future for children in Central Florida.

HELPING US GROW

Orlando Science Center is proud to announce that the Office of Naval Research (ONR) has chosen to award OSC, in partnership with GBL Systems Corporation and TEQGames, a generous grant supporting interactive STEM learning experiences at the Science Center. This support will develop the FutureOrb for STEM Learning project utilizing Beacon Technology to be installed in select areas of the Science Center. This project will enhance visitors’ STEM learning and exposure to USMC and Naval applications of the technology. We are immensely grateful for the wonderful partnership we have with ONR and truly appreciate the commitment they have to bringing engaging and relevant STEM content to the public.
