Greenhouse Effect What is the Greenhouse effect? Greenhouse gasses:

Carbon dioxide (55%) Chlorofluorocarbons (24%) Methane(~10%)

Page 3: Technology in the Environment and Medicine

Causes of the Greenhouse Effect 57% - Energy Use and Production (fosill

fuels) 17% - Emissions of CFC’s (aerosol cans) 14% - Agricultural practices (cultivation

and burning of prairies) 9% - Modification of land (clear cutting) 3% - Other industrial emissions

Genetic Engineering How would you feel if you were Terry Connelly? Would you want a family if you knew you had

Huntington's Chorea or another genetic disorder? Would you tell your family and friends? Do you think money should be spent on mapping

genes? Should Douglas planned on having children? Would you pick the traits of your children in the

future if that was available? What if they were suspect of a defective gene? Could this technology be used maliciously?

Medical Technology Product Testing (medical and consumer)

Is testing on animals ethical? Are there some animals that should be used and

others that should not? How reliable are these tests? What if everyone tested their theories on animals? Is it ethical to raise animals for testing? What are some other options?

Medical Technology Fetal Testing

Is it ethical to use the tissue of a fetus for research? If you or your parents had Parkinson's disease, how

would you feel about fetal testing? If you or your partner had an abortion, how would

you feel about the use of the fetus for testing? Would this effect the decision to abort? What about farming fetus’?

Medical Technology RU-486

If RU-486 can cure cancer should it be used? If RU-486 is available to treat cancer it culd

be used for abortions, is this ethical? Because RU-486 is non-surgical, is it more

ethical than surgical abortion? Is it ethical for the government to only fund

non-abortion uses for RU-486? What about other government funding?
