TECHNOLOGY:USE VS. INTEGRATION
Emily Belcher
Use vs. IntegrationIs there a difference?
The debate is whether or not technology integration and technology use is the same thing.
How would you define technology use? How would you define technology
integration?
Technology Use
Use implies simply that; the students engaged in the use of technology
Could be seen as using technology for the sake of using technology
Need in schools to help students prepare for the 21st century (Wallis & Steptoe, 2006).
What does technology use look like? Computers available for student use. Digital resources available Technology use implies the physical use
of technology, not the educational implications (Gahala, 2001)
Technology Integration
Integration is used so that educational topics are supported and aided by the use of technology.
Integration is used to accomplish another educational goal (Leftwich, 2008)
Learning happens through integration because goals are established and students can reflect upon those goals (Unknown, 2008)
What does technology integration look like? Interactive white boards Blogs Podcasts Classroom performance systems
(Leftwich, 2008) It looks like students using technological
advances to further and support their education
Real Life Example
Technology Use: Using a computer to create a PowerPoint
Technology Integration: Using a computer to create a PowerPoint presentation that is able to convey a meaningful message and be used in a class to achieve a learning objective.
Summary
Technology integration and technology use are not the same
