Use vs. IntegrationIs there a difference?

The debate is whether or not technology integration and technology use is the same thing.

How would you define technology use? How would you define technology

integration?

Technology Use

Use implies simply that; the students engaged in the use of technology

Could be seen as using technology for the sake of using technology

Need in schools to help students prepare for the 21st century (Wallis & Steptoe, 2006).

What does technology use look like? Computers available for student use. Digital resources available Technology use implies the physical use

of technology, not the educational implications (Gahala, 2001)

Technology Integration

Integration is used so that educational topics are supported and aided by the use of technology.

Integration is used to accomplish another educational goal (Leftwich, 2008)

Learning happens through integration because goals are established and students can reflect upon those goals (Unknown, 2008)

What does technology integration look like? Interactive white boards Blogs Podcasts Classroom performance systems

(Leftwich, 2008) It looks like students using technological

advances to further and support their education

Real Life Example

Technology Use: Using a computer to create a PowerPoint

Technology Integration: Using a computer to create a PowerPoint presentation that is able to convey a meaningful message and be used in a class to achieve a learning objective.

Summary

Technology integration and technology use are not the same

Technology use means that students are actually just using technology

Technology integration implies blending technology into a curriculum to give it purpose
