Pump room oil-in-water monitoring devices

AtZ Marine was asked to provide three Zone II hazardous area oil-in-water monitoring devices for location in the pump room.

We designed, installed and commissioned two Deckma OMD-7MKII air purged cabinets for measuring oil in the produced water and one Deckma OMD-17A for measuring oil-in-water in the VOC overboard line. We continue to provide dedicated service support with annual calibration and safety system checks for the equipment.

Deckma Hamburg GmbH, based in Hamburg Germany, is the world’s leading manufacturer of oil-in-water monitors and systems to the marine and industrial markets. In addition to a range of monitors conforming to the IMO-regulations for shipboard discharge of oily water Deckma also design and manufacture systems for such applications as: Boiler Condensate, Process Water, Cooling Water and General Effluent Discharge from Power Stations, Chemical Plants, Tank Farms and Offshore Platforms.

AtZ Marine Technologies are the official UK supplier of the full range of Deckma Oil-In-Water monitors. The range includes IMO MEPC107(49) approved monitors and spares for OMD-24, OMD-2008 and OMD-2005.

We provide annual calibration and service for all the UK leading fleet operators and super yacht operators. We can provide customers with same day turnaround and maintain a stock of spare parts, new monitors and service exchange units for ships operating to tight schedules ensuring regulatory compliance at all times.

Sterntube retrofit within 10 days

Arespectedshipownerdecidedtoretrofitasterntubeseal system to an air seal as a class approved alternative to using ‘environmentally acceptable lubricant (EAL)’ as definedintheUSEPAVGPintroducedinDecember2013.

The project necessitated the production and class approval of a 850mm forward and aft fully split-seal arrangement and associated air seal components within four working weeks to meet the dry dock date.

AtZ Marine worked with its partner AEGIR-Marine to produce the seal and sent their director of engineering to project manage the installation. The seal, air seal components and revised STLO pipework was installed and commissioned within 9 days.

Tribomar Oil test Case No 3

Instead of new vessels, ship owners can decide to buy younger second hand ships. The challenge on these acquisitions is to get an immediate overview of the state of the oils in the main engine, auxiliary diesels and the hydraulic systems.

To support owners and superintendents in these cases we recommend the Tribomar Oil test Case No 3. With this Test Kit it is possible to determine Water in Oil, the Base Number (Alkalinity reserve of engine oils) and to check the Viscosity of Oils. The advantage of this test kit is that the results are available immediately. The usual waiting time for land-based laboratories are therefore eliminated. This test kit can be used for all engine types. i.e 2 or 4 stroke engines.

TriboIron Test Kit:The unfavorable economic climate has forced many shipping companies toreducethespeedoftheirships.Manyofthelarge2-strokeenginesarebeing operated far below the design target speed resulting in problems with “Cold Corrosion” due to operation at lower cylinder temperatures.

Cold Corrosion can be identified using a suitable measuring tool to detect the total iron content in the Scrape Down Oil.

The TriboIron measuring tool displays the corrosive and abrasive portions of the iron in the oil 100% digitally.

TriboIron is easy to use and quickly produces accurate results.

On time delivery of new Stern tube bearing for a chemical tanker

On arrival at a planned drydock in Tuzla, Turkey the water lubricated rubber sterntune bearing on the vessel was found to have excessive clearance.

A new rubber bearing would have required a ten week lead time so the vessel manager asked AtZ Marine Technologies to propose an alternative solution that would meet Class Approval. As a result AtZ recommended and supplied a custom made, new Class Approved composite bearing (ACM L2 Marine) in three days. During the production time AtZ analysed the sterntube measurement data and designed the new bearing. Our specialist engineer then attended the drydock to oversee the installation.

Improving oily water separator performance and reducing system maintenance

AtZ Marine was commissioned to re-design and improve the OWS performanceonaUKtankeroperator’sfleetofover100vessels.

The OWS systems were upgraded using new Deckma 15ppm monitors and a 4 cartridge Wavestream WS-C3 filter package. The filter upgrade reduced oily water outfalls from an unacceptable 15~20ppm to 2ppm in just one pass through the Wavestream filters. The upgrade allowed the vessels owner to retain the older OWS saving them approximately £1,000,000.

Based in the UK, Wave International manufactures the complete range of Wavestream™ Oil-From-Water filtration systems. They are designed to suit all marine bilge applications and are supplied worldwide through a network of focused distributors, which is expanding all the time.

AtZ Marine Technologies offer the full range of Wavestream products including adsorption filters that remove up to 99% of total hydrocarbon from water streams. The filters vastly improve performance of Oily Water Separator outfalls resulting in improved cleanliness of discharge water to within the more difficult 5ppm regime and reduced OWS maintenance.

Solve leak on oil lubricated stern-tube seal

A Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel was ordered to Sierra LeoneaspartoftheUKGovernment’semergencyresponse to the Ebola outbreak in that region.

Prior to sailing it was discovered that one of the two propeller shafts had a small but identifiable oil leak on the seaward side of the shaft. AtZ Marine Technologies Ltd was asked to provide a ‘quick fix’ solution as there was no time to dry-dock the vessel.

AtZ Marine, shipped 100L of ABCON® Stern-tube Stop Leak product overnight from its stock in Southampton to the vessel’s base in Falmouth. The product was added to the shaft oil system resulting in a complete cessation of oil leakage within 24 hours. As a result the vessel was deployed to mission on time and spent 6 months off West Africa successfully establishing medical treatment centres in Ebola affected areas.

Sterntube Seal repairs for all makes

UPEwereapproachedbyalargetankerowneronveryshortnoticetoserviceavessel in Singapore that had a stern tube seal malfunction. Immediately, a service team was set up for the project and travelled from the Netherlands to Singapore, arrivingwithin24hours.Ashorttimeafterthatdivingoperationsstartedontheanchoredvessel.Firstinspectionwasperformedandestablishedthatfishingnet, wire and ropes were stuck around the liner and under the seal assembly.

The divers cleaned the outside of the seal assembly and removed the offending material. At the same time an oil boom was installed around the aft of the vessel as an environmental precaution against leakage.

The Sealdock© underwater habitat was placed in position, providing a dry working area created with all required life support, communication and CCTV equipment. The seal assembly was dismantled following standard procedures and taken to the surface. New replacement seals were then fitted and fully tested. The Sealdock© was then removed and returned to the surface and the oilboom removed. All works were completed within 3 days.

Bearing failure problem resolved

A leading operator of chemical tankers were experiencing consistently rising lead and tin levels in the sterntube oil analysis on one their vessels.

Following consultation with AtZ Marine it was decided to investigate the sterntube bearing at the vessel’s next drydocking. At the drydock it was discovered that the sterntube bearing had suffered a fatigue failure at the aft end. Subsequent investigation proved that the damaged bearing had been previously ‘re-metalled’ and the bearing shell had been machined (probably to remove distortion in the bearing shell). The machining had removed the required interference fit between the bearing and sterntube housing resulting in fretting and finally fatigue failure of the whitemetal. The damage had been compounded by excessive edge loading due to an in-correctly aligned bearing. AtZ Marine supplied a new sterntube bearing and managed the design, machining and fitting of the new bearing to achieve the correct fit and alignment.
