Two reactors produce heat that turns water into steam. Steam turns turbines that generate electricity. Water from the Chesapeake is used to cool the system.
• There are currently 104 licensed to operate nuclear power plants in the United States, which generate about 20% of our nation's electrical use.
Maryland currently has one nuclear power plant producing about 31% of our electricity.
Safe and Secure
• The NRC requires that nuclear power plants be both safe and secure.
• Safety refers to operating the plant in a manner that protects the public and the environment.
• Security refers to protecting the plant—using people, equipment and fortifications—from intruders who wish to damage or destroy it in order to harm people and the environment.
