ELECTRICITY

PRODUCTION

Can you imagine

your life

without electricity?

Americans call the night of July 13, 1977 "Night of fear." Then there was a

huge in size and consequences of the accident at the power grids in New

York. Due to lightning and power line in 25 hours 9 million New Yorkers

turned out to be without electricity. Tragedy of the financial crisis was

accompanied by unusually hot weather and the unprecedented wave of

crime. After a power outage on the fashionable quarters of the city attacked

the gang from poor neighborhoods.

It was after those terrible events in New York, the term "blackout" has become a

commonly used in relation to accidents in the power industry.

Already in ancient times the fire was an

indispensable source of heat, light, human,

means for cooking, hunting tool.

Modern community is increasingly

dependent on electricity as well as heat.

Accidents on the electricity and heating

systems applied to tangible losses to

enterprises, governments and the public.

We can not imagine myself now without

technical equipment you use, whether it

is production, vehicles, information or life.

Since that time, the development of technical

ideas allowed to reach a new level of human life.

WHAT PRODUCES OUR

ELECTRICITY?

Page 6: Team #4 our pres

COAL PLANTS

• Coal Plants produce

44% of our

electricity.

• A typical (500

megawatt) coal

plant burns 1.4

million tons of coal

each year.

• As of 2012, there

are 572 operational

coal plants in the

U.S. with an

average capacity of

547 megawatts.

HYDRO PLANTS (NIAGARA

FALLS) Hydroelectricity is the

term referring to

electricity generated by

hydropower; the

production of electrical

power through the use of

the gravitational force of

falling or flowing water. It

is the most widely used

form of renewable

energy, accounting for 16

percent of global

electricity generation –

3,427 terawatt-hours of

electricity production in

2010, and is expected to

increase about 3.1%

each year for the next 25

years.

WIND TURBINES• A wind turbine is a device that converts kinetic energy

from the wind into electrical power.

• The smallest turbines are used for applications such as

battery charging for auxiliary power for boats or other

smaller things.

• Bigger wind turbines can be used to create large

amounts of electricity that can be sold to electrical

companies.

• Many countries are now creating wind farms to allow

less fossil fuels in the air.

The windmill above is located

at Holy Name High

School in Worcester Mass.

SOLAR POWERSolar power is the conversion of

sunlight into electricity, either

directly using photovoltaics (PV),

or indirectly using concentrated

solar power (CSP). Concentrated

solar power systems use lenses

or mirrors and tracking systems to

focus a large area of sunlight into

a small beam. Photovoltaics

convert light into electric current

using the photovoltaic effect. The

PV industry is beginning to adopt

levelized cost of energy (LCOE)

as the unit of cost. For a 10 MW

plant in Phoenix, AZ, the LCOE is

estimated at $0.15 to 0.22/kWh in

2005.[

HOW DOES IT GET TO OUR

HOMES?

• ELECTRICITY IS TRANSPORTED TO A

DISTRIBUTION CENTER

Page 11: Team #4 our pres

THEN THE ELECTRICITY TRAVELS TO OUR HOMES

Page 12: Team #4 our pres

VOLTAGES

• HERE WE USE 120 –240 VOLTS TO POWER OUR

HOUSES

• BUSINESS BUILDINGS USE 277-480 VOLTS OR 208/120

VOLTS

Page 13: Team #4 our pres

RECEPTACLES (PLUGS)

• OUR RECEPTACLES ARE DIFFERENT FROM YOURS

• IF WE WERE TO COME THERE WE WOULD USE AN ADAPTER

I've always wondered, where there is electricity in our house?

Who is responsible for ensuring that the apartments, schools, hospitals was always warm?

It turned out that our city is the

main producer of electricity and heat -

Arkhangelsk HPP.

Page 15: Team #4 our pres

I had the unique opportunity

to visit the Arkhangelsk

cogeneration plant ...

... and see the process of

production of electricity and heat

myself.

Treatment - is the processing of water from

a natural source, to bring it into conformity

with the quality requirements of the process.

The engine room installed power boilers. They

produces steam for the turbines.

During the combustion of fuel in the water tubes,

arranged inside the boiler is heated to the boiling

point and is converted into steam.

The power boiler comprises of

the plurality of pipelines,

auxiliary devices and

mechanisms.

Boiler drum. It resultant vapor is separated from the water and

heated to the desired temperature.

Boiler furnace, which burns fuel

supplied to the boiler.

The paper used CHP fossil fuel

energy. It is produced by burning

natural gas and fuel oil.

connect its equipment together. Pipelines steam

enters the power boiler of the steam turbine.

Transformer - a device adapted to raise the

voltage of the electric current to reduce the

losses in power lines.

Power line - one of the components of the power system for

transmitting electricity, consisting of wires and auxiliary

devices for transmission and distribution of power between

consumers.

Every year on the last Saturday in March, millions of

people around the world turning off the lights for an

hour. This action - a symbol of our respect for the

home planet, it is designed to draw attention to the

unsustainable use of natural resources and

environmental problems

Energy gives us light and heat. And more in the development of

mankind advances, the more energy it needs.

However, very often people do not think about what fuels that are

used for energy (gas, oil, coal) are irreplaceable natural resources, which

are slowly but surely come to an end.

Page 25: Team #4 our pres

Each of us needs to understand how important it is to conserve energy and use energy

saving simple rules in your home.

0.5 kg of coal

The most efficient way to use energy - just learn how to protect it.

When saving 1 kW/h we saved:

0.4m ³ of gas0.3 liters of

oil
