Facilitated Study Groups Cindy Bongard, Coordinator, 416-208-2897, [email protected] Facilitated Study Groups (FSGs) are weekly study groups available to first and second year UTSC courses with high enrolment, attrition or failure rates. Led by a trained peer, FSGs encourage students to keep up with course material and develop effective study strategies. Results show that, on average, participants earn significantly higher mean grades and are more likely to complete the course. Available to consult with faculty on building a range of active and collaborative learning opportunities into their courses, both on and offline. TA and Graduate Student Services We offer TA training, seminars and a one-day event for TAs on teaching issues and professional development. Members of CTL can consult with TAs or with faculty on working effectively with TAs and TA teams, and on pedagogical issues around accessibility. The Writing Centre supports faculty, graduate and undergraduate students in improving oral and written communication skills related to academic programming.

We support faculty in using writing effectively and efficiently in courses, and can consult with faculty and TAs on customized in-class writing support, assignment design, marking, and rubrics.

We support students by providing individual and group writing instruction for students in all academic disciplines and at all levels. We offer one-on-one writing appointments, writing clinics, seminars, and print and electronic resources.

The English Language Development Centre supports faculty, graduate and undergraduate students in promoting language, critical thinking, and oral and written communication skills in courses. We support faculty in inclusive teaching that helps linguistically diverse students, first generation students and others acculturate academically.

Our programming is open to all students and includes: ELD Seminars, Communication Cafés, Discussion Skills Cafés, Academic Vocabulary Cafés, WordPlay: Critical Reading Workshops, a personalized academic reading/writing (RWE) program, one-on-one consultations and online resources.

We welcome requests to customize ELD programs to support courses.

We also offer a credit course CTLA01, Foundations in Effective Academic Communication.

We provide seminars, workshops, virtual tutoring, one-on-one appointments, and small-group consultations to improve students’ proficiency in mathematics and statistics. The goal is to create a vibrant environment to empower students to appreciate the beauty and utility of mathematics. Available to consult with faculty on collaborative learning and other techniques to improve student numeracy, data analysis, statistical analysis consultations and problem-solving skills.

Service learning provides students with structured opportunities to take academic concepts and approaches gained in their courses and actively apply them in meaningful contexts. Guided by deliberate reflection, students deepen their understanding of their discipline. The Service Learning program provides students with service learning opportunities in the community (“Outreach”) or classroom (“In-reach”).

Also available to consult with faculty on incorporating service learning in their courses or on engaging in-reach students, and on pedagogical tools such as reflective writing and portfolios.
