  • Teaching in the Virtual Classroom

The ProgramFielding’s innovative Teaching in the Virtual Classroom (TVC) certificate program, the most comprehensive of its kind, provides community and four-year college faculty, military trainers and faculty, corporate trainers, and K-12 teachers the skills they need to successfully develop, conduct, and evaluate online classes. Offered asynchronously online, the program is accessible using either dial-up or broadband connections.

What’s In It for YouIn this program, you will:

    ■ Learn in-demand skills. The increased role of online education in institutions of higher learning, K-12 school districts, the armed forces, and corporations has produced a dramatic increase in the demand for skilled, high quality online educators who can design and deliver effective online education.

    ■ Learn online. Delivered completely online, the comprehensive TVC program allows partici-

pants to learn online teaching skills and then practice these skills as they develop their own effective online courses.

    ■ Learn from the experts. The program’s core faculty, Drs. Rena Paloff and Keith Pratt, are well-known authors and consultants in online learning. Adjunct faculty includes Rita Marie Conrad, noted author of Engaging the Online Learner.

    The Faculty

The TVC Faculty are internation-ally known as leaders in the field of virtual classroom and distance learning.

Rena PaloffPh.D. and M.A., Fielding Graduate University. M.S.W., University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

This popular and talented team’s extensive work forms the foundation of Fielding’s Teaching in the Virtual Classroom program. Since 1994, Drs. Paloff and Pratt have been presenting this work at conferences across the United States and international-ly, including the Distance Teaching and Learning Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, EDUCAUSE, and the League for Innovation, as well as consulting to academic institutions regarding the devel-opment of effective distance learning programs. Drs. Paloff and Pratt coauthored Building Learning Communities in Cyberspace: Effective Strate-gies for the Online Classroom (Jossey-Bass, 1999), which won the 1999 Frandson Award. They have also published Lessons from the Cyberspace Classroom (Jossey-Bass 2001), The Virtual Student (Jossey-Bass, 2003), and Collaborating Online: Learning Together in Community (Jossey-Bass, 2005). The books, written for faculty, trainers, faculty developers, and administrators of distance learning programs, are comprehensive guides to the development of an online environment that promotes

successful learning outcomes while fostering a sense of community among learners.

I am thrilled to be taking these classes online and to be talking about my passion—teaching and learning. This online experience is very different...and I am really excited about it.

Denise Kingsley-Joy, Director of Computer and Information SciencesJamestown Community College

My goal in this program is to grow as instructor— especially as an online instructor and department chair. I want my students to come away with knowledge, inspiration, and the empowerment to learn more.
