Brief description of the subject

The subject Sports Nutrition is part of the module Sports and Quality of Life with 25.5 compulsory ECTS

credits. This subject deals with the special nutritional requirements of athletes. Through this subject,

students will be able to acquire the necessary knowledge to analyse and reason the nutritional needs of

athletes, and they will be able to make recommendations based on scientific evidence.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites are established to take this subject.

Objectives

1. To know the different sources of energy and their use during exercise.

2. To be able to carry out a correct nutritional assessment.

3. To be able to correctly guide the athlete regarding adequate eating rules and habits.

4. To know and be able to apply the different dietary guidelines with the aim of preserving health

and increasing sport performance.

Theoretical and practical presentation: Presentation of theoretical and practical contents by the

teacher in classroom. The presentations will be available to the students, in the virtual campus, prior to

the presentation in class.

Seminars: Some theoretical content will be illustrated with current issues for further discussion.

Likewise, analysis and assimilation of the contents of the subject, bibliographical consultations,

preparation of individual works and self-evaluation tests will be carried out.

Practical sessions: Experimental application of the knowledge acquired in the master classes.

Students will carry out practical works that allow them to develop their capacity for analysis, observation,

understanding of the scientific method and critical reasoning, which will allow them to guide the

patient/user.

Assessment: The necessary activities will be carried out for the evaluation of the students through the

learning outcomes in which the competences acquired by students in each subject are specified. For

student evaluations, theoretical exams and the work done will be taken into account.

Tutoring sessions: Individual and small group academic tutoring sessions will be carried out to resolve

doubts raised throughout the learning process, review and discuss topics presented in master classes

and practical sessions, consolidate knowledge, guide the student on the case studies to be made

regarding the practical work and check the evolution in the student’s learning.

Autonomous work: The objective is to assimilate theoretical and practical contents, to prepare possible

doubts to be solved through the academic tutoring sessions, to carry out learning activities and to

prepare the exams of the theoretical contents.

Relation with other subjects of the curriculum

The subject “Sports Nutrition” is related to the subjects Exercise Physiology, Planning of Sports Training,

Physical Activity and Health, Prescription of Physical Exercise, Personal Training and Fitness and

Kinanthropometry.

Evaluation framework

Exam session of February/June:

- Theoretical part: 60% of the total mark.

- Exhibition: 20% of the total mark.

- Practical part: 20% of the total mark.

The student will pass the subject when his or her weighted average is equal or superior to 5 points and

once he or she has passed all the parts of the evaluation framework, with a weighted average equal or

superior to 20%.

If the student obtains a mark below 5 in one of the parts whose weighted average is equal or superior to

20%, the subject will be failed and the student will have to retake that/those part/parts in the following

exam session of the same academic year. The part/s passed in the official exam sessions

(February/June) will be preserved until the next sessions of the same academic year.

In case the student doesn’t pass the subject during the exam session of September, the passed parts will not be

preserved for the following academic years.

The marking system (RD 1.125/2003 of 5 September) will be the following:

0-4.9 Fail (SS)

5.0-6.9 Pass (AP)

9.0-10 Excellent (SB)

The “distinction” mark can be given to those students who obtained a mark equal or superior to 9.0. It

may not exceed 5% of the students enrolled in the subject in the corresponding academic year, unless

the number of students enrolled is inferior to 20, in which case only one “distinction” mark can be given.

Exam session of September:

Recommendations for study

It is advisable that the student reviews daily the contents taught in the master classes and practical

lessons given the incremental nature of the subject.

Students will be able to access the email to make any questions they may have to the teachers. If

necessary, forums for discussion or doubts resolution will be enabled on the e-learning platform.

Teaching material

In the e-learning IT platform students will have all the necessary material for the correct development of

the subject. This material will be available before the beginning of the topics that make up the subject, so

that the student can review the subject before the contents are taught, being able to complete them in

class.

For the best performance of the practical sessions it is essential that the student attend with the

appropriate work material that will be indicated by the teachers in class.

Tutoring sessions

Brief description

The academic tutoring sessions will have the following goals:

- To provide personal guidance on the contents of the subject, evaluation systems, study methods and

teaching methodology.

- To solve the doubts and problems that the student may have about the topics taught.

- To reinforce and provide the minimum necessary knowledge to those students who require to

adequately follow the syllabus.

- To carry out with the students the extra activities required to complete and improve the training in the

subject.

Furthermore, the University has a special Group of Tutors that provides personal tutoring to the students

registered in the bachelor’s degree. The personal tutor accompanies the students throughout their whole
