BUSTER’S AROUND THE WORLD ADVENTURE ADVENTURE # 3 : EGYPT Episode Description Much to his surprise, Buster discovers there’s more to Egypt than just mummies and mythology. Buster’s new Egyptian friends not only show him the famous sights of Egypt—pyramids, camel rides, and a trip down the Nile—but also invite him into their homes to experience the rich customs and culture of Egypt today. Buster is treated to a typical Egyptian breakfast, learns how his friends practice their religion, gets a lesson in Arabic, and meets an unusual pet—a baby crocodile! Before Viewing Explore Buster’s world map. Use the map (or a wall map) to have a discussion about Egypt’s geographic location. Ask students to: 1. Locate Egypt on the map and draw an arrow from the country to the matching postcard. 2. Locate their own country on the map and draw a star there. 3. Use their finger to “fly” across the map from their country to Egypt. 4. Use the Internet or a world wall map to locate Cairo, Giza, and Aswan within Egypt. Discuss what you know. With your students, create a K-W-L chart with three columns: 1. Know 2. Want to Know 3. Learned Fill in the first two columns, recording what they know about Egypt and what they want to know. After viewing the episode and completing the four activity sheets (see below), return to the chart and fill in the final column, what they learned. After Viewing Complete the activity sheets. When your students have finished, discuss as a class. You may need to replay portions of the episode to help students recall some of the events. ACTIVITY 2 Egypt: Then and NowThis activity expands students’ historical understanding by asking them to differentiate between ancient Egypt and present-day Egypt, a distinction emphasized in the episode.

Extension: Have your students write their name or a short message in hieroglyphics, using an online site such as Hieroglyphic Typewriter (http://www.eyelid.co.uk/hieroglyphic-typewriter.html) or Guardian’s Egypt (http://www.guardians.net/egypt/hieroglyphs/hiero-translator.htm).

ACTIVITY 3 Buster’s Map AdventureBuster traveled in both the north and south of Egypt. In this map activity, students locate the four places Buster visited in Egypt: Cairo, Giza, Nile River, and Aswan.

ACTIVITY 4 Postcard from BusterIn this activity, students create a picture postcard for Buster, drawing something he saw or did in Egypt. They also fill in Buster’s speech bubble with an Arabic phrase. Optional: Have students write a message and address the postcard, and then mail it to their family.

Make More Connections (optional)Compare a related episode. Show students a related Postcards from Buster episode. In A Sense of Direction (Episode 102), Buster meets Farah, a Muslim girl who lives in Chicago, Illinois. Ask students to discuss the similarities and differences between what they learn about the Muslim religion in this episode and in Buster’s Egyptian Adventure.

Here are some of the friends Buster makes in Egypt. Explore the ways you are similar to or different from them.

A Visit from Egypt If Fahrid, Haya, and Ahmed came to visit you, what would you show them about your country?

Fahrid

Fahrid is an inventor. He shows Buster a telescope he’s invented—and a sketch of a device that would let people jump over the pyramids! If you invented something, what would it be? Describe or draw it below.

When Buster visits Haya, she shows him how she prays. Have you met someone from a different religious background? What religion was it, and what did you learn about it?

Buster is thrilled when Ahmed gives him an Ankh as a present. What are some of your favorite presents? Who gave them to you?
