    Ideas for phonics activities

    Compiled by Engku, Maspah, Rashidah, Rubil, Sazlinda, Zunaini, Briana and Ellie.

    Mini Books

    Lesson Plan:

    Prep: Teacher hides sounds around the class on ashcards. Sts ha!e to "nd the sounds theteacher says.

    Main activity: Teacher pro!ides a mini book to each group #ith letters in. Students "nd and

    stick the pictures that relate to the sounds in the mini book.

    Consolidate: Matching sounds and #ords to the pictures.

    Activities:

    $running dictation. Teacher posts a #ritten passage on the #all, one %or each group. The sts

    run up one by one to their passage. They then memorise a part, run back to their group and

    tell the group. This is #ritten into the mini book. Then the ne&t student runs to the passage

    and so on until their mini book is complete.

    $'uess the phonemes( Students each ha!e a mini book #ith sounds in. Teacher #ill )uickly

    sho# or *ip+ a ashcard and the pupils ha!e to turn to the correct page in the mini book.

    E&ample teacher ashes a picture o% a cat. Students ha!e to "nd the k sound.

    Play dough

    Lesson Plan

    Prep: Rub the sand letters

    Main activity:Each student has someplay dough. Teacher sounds aloud a sound e.g. s. Sts

    ha!e to make the sound #ith their play dough.

    Consolidation( -orksheet. Matching pictures #ith sounds.

    Activities

    $orm the sounds, letters #ords etc the teacher says. /can be done as group, pair or indi!idual

    $Students make ob1ects and the other student has to guess the beginning sound/pair or group

    #ork02r other students can make the beginning sound.

    $Can be used %or spelling or a sound bee.

    Dice

    Prep: Teacher says a #ord %rom a picture card. Students guess the initial sound.

    Main activity: Teacher puts bo&es around room #ith parts o% the %an in. Teacher says a sound

    and Sts ha!e to go to the correct bo& and "nd the sound, or, each group has a bo& #ith all

    parts o% the %an in and look in their o#n bo&.

    Consolidation: Match sounds to graphemes

    Activities:

    $Sts stand in 5 lines. The "rst 5 students ha!e %ans and segment and blend #ords. They then

    go to the back and the ne&t Sts step %or#ard.

    $Sts segment and blend #ords using %ans

    $guess and hold up phonemes on the %an, %rom either ashcard or an action done by the

    teacher.

    Prep: Telephone game. 6i!ide class into 37 groups. 8a!e them get into ro#s. 9t the back o%

    each ro# ha!e a bo& #ith letters. 8a!e the :st student in each ro# come %or#ard and sound

    out a letter to them. They go back and #hisper the sound to the ne&t person in line. The last

    sts goes to the bo& and "nds the sound and holds it up. Rotate.

    Main acti!ity( ind your partner. 8and;out letters and pictures to Sts. They must go around

    saying only the "rst sound o% the #ord or letter until they "nd their partner. -hen they ha!e

    %ound their partner, present pictures and sounds to class.
