Amongst other serious health conditions, Malachi has epilepsy, but if he is having a good day Mum Julie likes to get him out and about. He wears rugby headgear, not because she is a rugby mad Mum as some people have asked, but to help protect her son’s head should he have a seizure and fall. On a couple of occasions he has had a seizure, such as the time they were shopping at The Ware- house and again at Pak’n Save. Miss Agnew says people look in horror while she puts in him the recovery position until it is over, or carries him somewhere private, but those episodes are not life threatening and are part of his everyday life. She says the Pak’n Save inci- dent was bad because he was sitting in the trolley with his legs through the holes and she couldn’t lift him out. He now sits in the trolley, which has raised a few eyebrows and some comments — but that’s what she does so she can lift him if she needs to. The family is from Southland, where Miss Agnew worked as a farm manager and AI technician. She separated from her hus- band prior to Malachi’s birth. Malachi was fine until he was about four years old and started having seizures at Kindergarten. He had to stop attending and started undergoing tests. MRI scans revealed the rare Arnold Chiari Malformation the base of the brain starts falling down into the spinal column, and epilepsy. The brain crushes the spinal cord and causes paralysis. Malachi is one of two children with this condition in New Zea- land. He had an operation to remove the nodes in the back of the neck and disc between to relieve the pressure. The operation was successful, but Malachi failed to thrive. He is still small for his age, and although quite tall, he is under- weight and needs special foods and supplements to survive. More tests found he had intra- cranial pressure, where excess fluid was squashing his brain. That also produced scoliosis, twisting of the spine, and in December last year he underwent another operation to install a shunt to take those fluids away from the brain and into his stom- ach area where they are absorbed. That isn’t working properly, and he needs another operation. Malachi’s treatment started at Christchurch Hospital, and while Miss Agnew says the staff and surgeons were excellent, the real specialist treatment is based at Starship. Two major earthquakes didn’t help the situation, so the Agnews, Julie, Malachi and his older brother Maitlan, shifted to Te Awamutu. She didn’t know anyone in the North Island, but did have two nieces about her age in Te Awa- mutu so this is where they came. Her parents Brian and Mar- garet Sievwright also shifted here to support her and the boys. They rent a home and the Agnews live in a motorhome on the property. The boys are homeschooled through New Zealand Corres- pondence School, and both are doing well. Miss Agnew says Malachi did attend Pekerau School, and they were great, but it was too much for everyone. ‘‘Homeschooling keeps the boys together and makes life easier for us and others.’’ Miss Agnew says the motor- home was a good choice, after first renting a house. ‘‘We have everything we need at hand should we be out when something happens to Malachi, or if we have to go to Starship,’’ she says. NEW HOME: Six-year-old Malachi Agnew, who has the rare Arnold Chiari Malformation, epilepsy and otherhealth complications, lives with his Mum Julie and older brother Maitlan in a motor home so everything theyneed is ready to go in an emergency.

Rights, wrongs on the roadHow I choose to use the

public road isunchallengeable, eh!

Yet the road should be aplace of total equality.Regardless of high or lowsocial status, youth or age,the public road is the onlymeans we have of gettingfrom place to place withoutcrossing private property.

Has current legislationbeen drafted by Toad of ToadHall? Users of the ‘‘HighWay’’ with motors clearlyhave more equal rights than

cyclists and equestrians.Pedestrians crossing theroad in the country to walksafely on the right hand side, join the ranks of thedisenfranchised. Poop poop!Poop poop!

New Zealand, at the fore-front of international legisla-tive reform since womenwere seen to be humanenough to vote, has recog-nised that most motorvehicles have one person onboard, sitting on the rightside of the car.

The unspoken safety ruleis that if an oncomingvehicle at an intersectionwould hit the vehicle on theside that the person is sit-ting, they give way. Con-versely, if the oncomingvehicle would hit theirvehicle on the left, they keepgoing.

This is much too hard foranyone to understand des-pite being in use for 30 years— perhaps because it hasnever been presented as pol-icy but instead as a compli-

cated set of case-by-caserules.

With the confusion that isabout to reign during ourreversal of forward-thinkinglegislation, we will needplenty of policy, becauserules and their interpreta-tion will lead only to argu-ment.

Like the right that lets ususe the road equally withothers, the policy is old-fashioned, and has an old-fashioned name: courtesy.

NICK EMPSON

Time forgratitudeJames Parlane needs to get his factsright before writing to your paper.

He needs to be assured that footand mouth disease isn’t spreadsimply by ‘‘trucks spreading cowfaeces along our highways’’; thedisease must first be imported intoNew Zealand.

And when he suggests that theWaipa Council is over-representedby farmers, he once again exposeshis ignorance.

For that to be the case, twothirds or more of the council wouldbe made up of the rural folk whopay almost two thirds of the generalrate.

That is, rural Waipa subsidisesJames’ urban excesses. For that,James might show a little grati-tude.

He might even become sooverwhelmed with gratitude and anewly-discovered bonhomie, thatwe will see him embracing horses, offering to shovel their spilt pooand inviting them to share thestreets as is their legal right.

ROGER CLARKE

Wastingmoney

I feel that I mustwrite in to this greatpaper in support ofJohn Stewart (inrelation to JimParlane). Don’t give into him.

He has the biggestchip on his shoulderand thinks that havinga go and wasting publicmoney is his right.

He needs to have areality check and lookat where the money heis wasting could beused to improve thelives of Te Awamuturesidents.

If he does not likethe way things are donehe could always standfor council or movesomewhere else.

Put up or shut up.

BERT SIMPSON

Good for councilsThe new ‘‘better governmentplan’’ may well be the bestthing that has happened tomany local councils.

It will give them tightguidelines in which to oper-ate concentrating on coreissues and managing ratelevies to be affordable for allresidents.

Excess debt is somethingno one needs. It’s easy toaccumulate and hard to getrid of.

Some borrowing will benecessary to fund water andsewerage upgrades, but itmust be well planned for and

managed in tight budgets.Major sporting events

would have to look elsewherefor funding and not hit thepoor old ratepayer’s pocket.

One concern I personallyhave is any suggestion ofamalgamating local councils.

It would be a disaster forWaipa, we would lose ourunique identity completely, just becoming a small cog in abig wheel.

Also, your rates could wellbe siphoned off to support bigprojects in other towns.

VERN WILSONWaipa District Councillor

Nice turns to nastyThank you to the young

girls who helped pick me upwhen I had fallen onSunday, and took me backinside to my chair.

Your help was needed, but did you really have to

help yourselves to my walletand money?

It would be appreciated ifyou could please return mywallet as it was a gift frommy 95-year-old mother.

Prison jobs under threatCorrections staff at sev-eral prisons look likely tolose their jobs when anew privately runfacility at Wiri, SouthAuckland, replaces sev-eral older prisons.

Prime Minister JohnKey confirmed that someolder prisons wouldclose, but did not saywhich ones or howmany.

‘‘We’re going throughthe process of talking tothe unions that areinvolved.’’

Mr Key told NewstalkZB that the financialeffect the closures wouldhave on local communi-

ties had been considered, but that overall it was inthe best interests of thejustice system not tokeep them going.

‘‘They required a lotof ongoing maintenance,so they wouldn’t be greatfacilities for theprisoners and staff whowork in them.

‘‘We took the viewthat it was better toupgrade the stock withthe new prison at Wiri.’’

Corrections MinisterAnne Tolley has alreadysaid Corrections waslooking to close Mt Craw-ford Prison in Welling-ton.

Labour justicespokesman CharlesChauvel says sourceshad suggested New Ply-mouth, Invercargill andWellington prisons wereamong those slated forclosure, while Waikeriaand Paremoremoprisons would also be cutback.

Mr Chauvel saidprison closures woulddeal big blows to regionaleconomies, as a sig-nificant number of jobswere lost.

‘‘Prison beds are stillneeded, and smallerinstitutions, spreadacross New Zealand, are

better than mega-facilities concentrated ina few centres.

‘ ‘These reasonsinclude risk manage-ment and rehabilita-tion, as well as theircontribution toregional economies.‘‘But more import-antly, they’re alreadythere, and the taxpayerhas spent millions ofdollars over decades tokeep them open.’’

The new Wiriprison is to be run bySerco, a private com-pany that alsomanages Mt Edenprison. — APNZ

Companion Kingwill help Corban

TC080111CA01

FLASHBACK: Corban Melville when he appeared on the front of theTe Awamutu Courier (08/01/11).

BY CATHY ASPLIN

TC220312SP08

FUTURE: King (with his harness on) is in his final stage of training so that he can assist CorbanMelville.

Corban Melville’s wait for anassistance dog is almost over.

Corban featured on the frontpage of the Te Awamutu Courierjust over a year ago.

At the time the autistic four-year-old was causing safety con-cerns for his grandparents Lynleyand Carl Melville ‘‘It was when hewas around three we comparedhim to other children of a similarage and realised something wasn’tquite right.

‘‘He was often in his own worldand oblivious to what others weredoing around him. He also ranaway at every chance he got andhad no concept of safety.

‘‘We made our property moresecure, but we had to keep hold ofhim while we were out or hebolted.’’

A meeting for families of autis-tic children gave the Melvillefamily a possible solution to theirproblem.

Kaz Pollard organised themeeting and had local disabilitydog trainer Julie Hancox visit.

She says they realised a dis-ability dog could provide Corbanwith a companion to stop himfrom escaping.

Mrs Pollard says this couldmake a huge difference to him andhis family.

‘‘The dog will enable them toventure out. If Corban becomesoverwhelmed the dog will distracthim or comfort him.’’

Corban can be tethered to thedog, so that if he decided to runaway it would collapse on theground, stopping his escape.

‘‘Most importantly the dog willgive Corban a companion he canbond with and help him connectwith the world.’’

The assistance dog earmarkedfor Corban is ‘King’ who has justturned one.

He has just finished his puppytraining stage and is starting histraining towards being Corban’s

support and mate. He will masterbasic commands first and thenstart his advanced training basedon Corban’s needs.

Trainer Julie Hancox saysKing is doing well and is confidentthat he will suit Corban.

‘‘King is enjoying the trainingwalks he goes on and likes histrips into Te Awamutu. In his offtime hours he spends time gam-bolling around the farm atNgutunui or in the pine treeforest.

‘‘King has shown himself to bea sensitive and caring dog — morethan capable of sharing his love

with those that need it most.’’Of course a specially trained

disability dog also comes with alarge price tag so a fundraisingcampaign has been underwaysince last year. Mrs Pollard saysso far nearly $3000 has been raisedtowards the $10,000 target.

‘‘We are currently staging araffle, the prize is a beautiful quiltwhich has been donated from theTe Awamutu Quilting Group.’’

■ If youwould like to helpwith theCorbanMelville fundraisingcampaign, contact Kaz Pollard (ph871 7056).

NEW MOVES: Newly appointed Te Awamutu Brass musical director Te Reo Hughes at the helm of lastweek’s band rehearsal.

Proud to lead her band

Te Awamutu Brass hasappointed a new musical directorwho, it is fair to say, breaks thetraditional mould of the role.

Te Reo Hughes is young andfemale — but she has a proudmusical heritage and long associa-tion with Te Awamutu Brass andthe local music scene.

Te Reo is the oldest daughter ofMaria and the late Bill Hughes, himself a talented well knownmusician.

‘‘I watched my dad conduct theKihikihi Ratana choir from a veryyoung age and sang in the choirtoo. From this I taught myselfpiano, reading tonic sol-fa beforemusic notation.’’

Te Reo started keyboardlessons with Jane Wilson agedeight and was later taught pianoby Dorothy Schimanski- Grey. Shewas her first student to receive 100per cent in a theory exam.

Te Reo progressed to Grade 7Piano practical and Grade 5 the-ory, before finishing tuition andfocusing on the cornet.

Her Dad always had a love ofbrass bands and at nine Te Reojoined the Te Awamutu Brasslearner group, playing tenor hornunder John Pye, alongside heryounger sister Kaperiera, whoplayed cornet .

Kaperiera is still a member of

Te Awamutu Brass.A year later in 1995 she joined

the senior band on cornet, thesame year Barry Cullen took overas musical director from GregMoverly.

Mr Cullen and other membersof the band nurtured her, and shebecame an excellent cornet player.

She was also member of the TeAwamutu College Concert andJazz band under George Brooks.

Through school she receivedtuition from Grant Mason, whotook her for her first practicalexam — Grade 7 Trinity College, playing in braces. Te Reo passedwith distinction.

She later completed Grade 8cornet under Mr Cullen’s guid-ance.

Te Reo was also selected fornumerous bands: Waikato YouthBrass — Barry Cullen MD; Wai-kato Secondary Schools Brass —Colin Smith MD; the First andSecond New Zealand SecondarySchools Brass — Nigel Weeks MD;several National Youth BrassBands under Nigel Weeks andKevin Mosely and she was part ofthe 2003 UK Anzac Tour; principalcornet for Te Awamutu Brassunder Barry Cullen and HamiltonBrass under Mason Elliot; and, Acasual member of the Trust Wai-kato Symphony.

Te Reo also has achievednumerous wins and placings inregional and national contests forpiano and cornet.

She and her partner WalterGenefaas have a son, Walter, agedsix who is showing a keen interestin music.

Te Reo is currently in her finalyear studying for a Bachelor ofMusic degree at The University ofWaikato, majoring in trumpetunder the tuition of Rupertd’Cruze.

She plans to do a post graduatediploma in secondary teaching in2013.

She has a keen interest inTaonga Puoro (traditional maoriinstruments).

Other interests include compo-sition/orchestration/arrangingand musical direction.

‘‘I am incredibly excited todirect Te Awamutu Brass. I’vebeen a part of this band for themost part of my life and they havealways supported me,’’ says TeReo.

‘‘I feel like it is my turn to givesomething back and have a funtime doing it.

‘‘There are exciting timesahead and I look forward toimplementing and injecting mypersonal musical ideas andflavour into the band.’’

BRETT DENTON back playingbowls at his beloved Te AwamutuBowling Club where his long andillustrious career started in 1986.

BY COLIN THORSEN

Brett Denton picked up wherehe left off 18 years ago winning the2011-12 senior men’s singles cham-pionship at Te Awamutu BowlingClub.

The former Waikato senior (Top7) representative beat Murray Wil-son 22-6 over 16 ends in the final —restricting his opponent to fivesingles and a two.

Denton’s last title before leavingTe Awamutu in 1993 was the seniorsingles.

‘‘It’s been fantastic playingagainst and alongside players Iplayed with all those years ago as ajunior,’’ says Denton.

‘‘There were some real ‘blastfrom the past’ clashes against JoeTolich and John Hastie in the opensingles tournament.

‘‘Both still gave me a greatbattle.’’

Hastie was only trailing Denton19-17 after 18 ends in the semifinalbut conceded a two the next end tolose 21-17.

The other semifinal saw Wilsonoust Graham (Shoota) Ballinger21-16 over 22 ends.

Denton says the biggest thrillwinning this tournament washaving his very first coach, HarryHopping, looking on.

‘‘He taught me a lot and over theyears. In certain situations I wouldthink, what would Harry advise?

‘‘I’m still happy to seek his

advice and he is not slow in givingme some grief over some poorlyexecuted shot making — so thiswin is for you Harry.’’

Denton has returned to Te Awa-mutu bowling scene a far moreexperienced and superior playerthan when he was making hismark as a junior in the Waikato allthose years ago.

He has experienced playing outof the Onehunga and Hendersonclubs in Auckland and Kerikericlub in the Far North — capturingnumerous club and interclub titles,as well as three Far North Centretitles. His outstanding form sawhim become a Far North seniorrepresentative, and an AucklandDevelopment and Senior B repre-sentative. He was also a member ofthe Far North/Northland/NorthHarbour rep squad (10 players)that contested the National SuperEight finals.

In 2010, Denton was maderedundant by Westpac Banking, after 24 years of working for them,so he and his wife Lynette made thedecision to move back to Te Awa-mutu where he is currentlyemployed as a customer servicerepresentative for Genesis Energy.

They have a three-year-old son,Daniel.

‘‘I’ve been approached to try outfor the Waikato rep squad but, atthis stage, I have declined.

‘‘I simply want to enjoy thegame and involve myself with the

club where it all began. I may evenlook towards becoming a coachmyself and giving back to the gameI have enjoyed for the past 26years.’’

Maddrens mix itfor pairs champs

Dave Barnes and JoanMaddren retained both their liveswinning the drawn mixed pairschampionship at Kihikihi Bowl-ing Club.

The final pitted the twoMaddrens against each other.

Barnes skipped Joan Maddrento a 15-8 victory over one-lifersMerv Maddren (s) and AuriolLowerson.

The winning and losing of thematch occurred on ends two to fivewhich saw the Barnes’ team scorenine shots.

Trailing 13-3 after 11 ends,Merv Maddren and Lowersonfound another gear, stringingtogether three twos on the trot, butit was all too little, too late.

In the semi-finals, Barnes elim-inated Ken Morriss and OlgaBarnes 18-10, while Merv Maddrenousted David Barnett and NinaThomson 20-8.

Progressive winners onPatron’s Day were Herman vanden Broek, Joan Maddren, BrianPickering and Hazel Chubb. Therunners-up were Rex McGill,Ngaire Lawson, Dot Anderson andPhil Chubb.

RECORD BREAKER: Hayden McCormick on hisway to a national under-19 record time in the 3kmindividual pursuit at Invercargill.

Te Awamutu’sHayden McCormick isdetermined to go onebetter and medal at thejunior world track cyc-ling championships inInvercargill.

McCormick was gut-ted on his return homefrom last year’s juniorworlds in Moscow afterbeing pipped for bronzein the scratch race as afirst year under-19 rider.

His selection in the16-strong team, namedthis week by BikeNZ,appeared automatic —especially after herecently won the under-19 individual pursuitchampionship in record

time at the New Zealandtrack nationals in Inver-cargill.

Waikato team mana-ger, Errol Newlands saysMcCormick was also thedominant enduranceathlete of the competi-tion but was ‘so closelymarked’ that he didn’treally have a medalchance in the scratch orpoints races.

‘‘The respect that wasshown by other ridersfrom throughout NewZealand was clearly tes-tament to the high stand-ard that Haydenperforms at.’’

The team will take onthe world’s best under-19cyclists from more than20 countries at the Inver-

cargill Velodrome fromAugust 22-26.

Six of the team returnfrom last year’s success-ful group that won arecord 10 medals inMoscow.

BikeNZ head coachRoss Machejefskibelieves they haveselected a strong teamfor the championships.

‘‘We had an excellentOceania Championshipsin Invercargill wherethese riders reallyperformed well. There’sa lot of hard work to gobut they are all fizzingabout the chance to com-pete in a world cham-pionships on their hometurf.

‘‘The velodrome at

Invercargill is like asecond home to them allwhich will be a sig-nificant advantage forsure.’’

Machejefski says heis confident thatMcCormick will bethereabouts when itcomes to handing out themedals in Invercargillcome August.■ A team of 17 Waikatoriders recently attendedthe Age Group TrackCycling National Cham-pionships in Invercar-gill, including 12 Te Awa-mutu Sports clubmembers — Les Candy,Hayden McCormick,Julia Main, Heidi vanLoon, Blair Treymane,Boris Clark, Emma

Porritt, Amanda Rowe,Shannon Grinter, JessieCrabb, Jessica Read andJordana Hallam.

McCormick’s contri-bution was huge helpingteam mates BlairTreymane and BorisClark secure their firstnational medal byplacing third.

The U17B team pur-suit saw Jessie Crabbteam up with two Tauporiders and a pool riderfrom Auckland. Theywon bronze in a timeworthy of the silvermedal.

Masters rider LesCandy also won bronzein the points race, as didJulia Main in the U19Wage group team pursuit.

High fl ying Chiefs win three in a rowThe Chiefs posted their third win in a row beating

the Brumbies 29-22 at Bay Park Stadium, Mount Maunganui on Friday night.

Dubbed the ‘Battle in the Bay’ - the encounter lived up to the pre-match hype as both teams contributed to what was an exhilarating contest.

The highlight of the match came when co-captain Craig Clarke chose to kick for touch instead of taking a penalty shot. To the delight of the crowd, who were chanting ‘Chiefs, Chiefs, Chiefs’, it resulted in their fi rst try of the match to prop Sona Taumalolo between the posts.

Taumalolo has now scored three tries and is one of the top try scorers in the Investec Super Rugby competition.

The Brumbies hit back with a try of their own before the Chiefs had the fi nal word with centre Jackson Willison scoring the match-winning fi ve pointer on fulltime.

Chiefs’ coach Dave Rennie was not pleased with his team’s performance, saying: “It was a frustrating night. We put ourselves under pressure and weren’t at our best, but to manufacture that try at fulltime was positive. It took a lot of guts and composure for us to get that four points (three for the win, one for four tries).”

One lucky fan from Mt Maunganui won $3000 cash in the Waikato Draught halftime ‘Kick for Cash’

competition and is going to put the money towards his honeymoon.

The Chiefs next match is a home game at Waikato Stadium on Saturday, March 31 when they play the Waratahs at 7.35pm.

Ticket prices for the match start at $5 for Kids (plus service fee) and $10 for Adults (plus service fee).

Tickets are available from www.chiefs.co.nz, from Gate 1 at Waikato Stadium the week prior to the match on Wednesday and Thursday between 10am and 6pm, and from Friday 9am until halftime.

Ticket kiosks are also at The Warehouse stores throughout the Chiefs region.

For more information visit www.chiefs.co.nz

It was a tough week for our panel picking winners in round four of the Investec Super XV Rugby competition.

Team Timmo’s ITM have taken the outright lead

with 78% winning success rate after Kevin Hudson

managed to select fi ve out of six winners. His

only hiccup was the Western Force beating the

Hurricanes.

Former co-leader, Homeward’s Mark McNaughten

slipped to equal second after managing a 50% success

rate in round four. He is joined in second place on 70%

overall by PGG Wrightson Rural Supplies’ Andrea

Miller, who had four winners in the latest round.

Ohaupo look good in season openerO h a u p o l o o k e d W a i k a t o

second division rugby champion-ship contenders dealing to Raglan30-19.

Ken Collins reports that theseason opener on Saturdaystarted as one would expect withboth teams being a little rusty.

The first 20 minutes saw Rag-lan making most of the play.

The sea-siders scored two earlytries to lead 12-0 playing with theassistance of the wind.

For the next 20 minutesOhaupo started to get into theirwork.

The forwards took control of

the set pieces and, by keeping theball in hand, starved Raglan’sslick backs of any front foot ball.

After a couple of forwarddrives being held up by thedefence, Ohaupo finally scoredwhen No. 8 Watson Mason made abreak off the back of the scrumand sent halfback Jeff Kite overfor a try.

Ohaupo scored again througho p e n s i d e f l a n k e r G a r r yCurruthers after a series of pickand goes. Both the Ohaupo trieswere unconverted and Raglan led12-10 at halftime.

W i n d a s s i s t e d , O h a u p o

maintained pressure on theopposition’s ball in the set piecesin the second half, and the edu-cated boot of Mike Monahan keptRaglan trapped in their half forlong periods.

Ohaupo were rewarded with acouple of Monahan penalties.

Having more ball to play with, the Ohaupo backs started to findtheir rhythm.

Second five Ethan Cassidy-Minhinnick scored near the postsafter wrong footing the Raglandefence and breaking a couple oftackles. Monahan converted forOhaupo to lead 23-12.

With around 10 minutes to goRaglan’s ‘never say die’ attitudewas rewarded with a try in thecorner. An excellent conversionhad Raglan back in contention, trailing 23-17.

Ohaupo had the final say, win-ning a lineout inside the Raglanhalf from which centre ClaytonTungia chip kicked and gatheredthe ball to score an outstandingindividual try, converted byMonahan, to complete a hardearned win.

Collins says ‘‘with a mixture ofyouth and experience, Ohaupolook set for another good season.’’

Silky future for fillyBY PHILLIP QUAY

KERRY BENNETT PHOTO

SILKS PINS in the birdcage prior to running third in the Group 2Matamata Breeders’ Stakes last month.

Talented Te Awamutu-trained juvenile filly Silk Pinscould be headed for a Mel-bourne spring campaign.

Co-trainer, Brendon Hawtinsays Silk Pins had been turnedout for a spell and will remainin the paddock at TrelawneyStud until June.

‘‘She will then be back forthe first of the three-year-oldfillies series races at Hast-ings.’’

Si lk Pins’ owner MaxWhitby is considering takingher over to the Melbournespring carnival, provided shecomes up well.

‘‘She is a very excitingfilly,’’ says Whitby.

‘‘What she has done as atwo-year-old is very much abonus as she has a lot ofimprovement in her.’’

Silk Pins was unlucky not toland one of the major two-year-old races in the country thisseason.

Instead she had to settle for

minor placings in the $1million Karaka Million atEllerslie (second), the Group 1Diamond Stakes at Ellerslie(third) and Group 2 MatamataBreeders’ Stakes (third).

‘‘She was unlucky not to

have picked up one of the bigraces and thoroughly deservedtoo,’’ says Hawtin.

‘‘She showed us a lot ofability from day one and wehave a lot to look forward towith her next season.’’

TA Marist down final foes

TC220312CT02

STALWART Te Awamutu Marist prop Stuart Dexter (pictured rightat pre-season training) played well against Te Akau on Saturdaybefore injuring a hamstring early in the second half. Also picturedare Chris Collins and Zahn Riri.

Te Awamutu Marist scored 25unanswered second half points tobeat arch rivals Te Akau 28-12 inWaikato second division rugby.

It was an uncharacteristicallyhigh winning margin between thetwo sides who met in last season’sfinal and augurs well for TeAwamutu Marist’s quest to winthe championship for a thirdconsecutive year.

For the opening 40 minutes, however, it appeared a combina-tion of first-game nerves andexcitement were getting the betterof the home team at CastletonPark.

It took stern words from Maristcoach Tony Kahura and an injec-tion from his bench to turn a 12-3halftime deficit into such a com-manding victory.

The Murray Gane Plumbing/Henrys sponsored Marist teamunveiled a new playing strip onSaturday.

Co-coach Carl Hendersonreports after securing a lot of newsponsors for 2012, the boys wantedto make a good impression intheir new jerseys — placing addedpressure on themselves against atypically spirited Te Akau team.

Te Akau opened the scoringafter 15 minutes with a try from asimple cut move the Maristbackline misread.

First five Ben Gisler openedMarist’s account 10 minutes laterwith a penalty.

The visitors then scored a softtry in the 30th minute for theirnine point halftime lead.

Marist came out firing in thesecond half, completelydominating possession and terri-tory.

The forward’s dominanceallowed the backs freedom toexpress themselves.

A second Gisler penaltyimmediately after the resumptionin play was followed, midwaythrough the second half, by a well-worked try to new recruit, secondfive Katane Hepi.

It wasn’t long before halfbackCody Collins scooted over for a tryfrom a five metre scrum. AdamKahura was next to dot down for afive pointer after a strong run.

Marist finished the game witha beautifully worked lineoutmove, resulting in barnstormingSouth African prop StefanBarnard crashing his way over tosecure a valuable fourth try bonuspoint. Gisler converted to blow thescore out to a 16 point winningmargin.

The Burger King sponsoredplayer of the day went to KataneHepi for his strong allround game. The Redoubt Bar and Eaterytackler of the day was StuartDexter.

Barnard also stood out, as didCollins, who had a lively game athalfback.

Melissa Etheridge liveMelissa Etheridge plays

Auckland’s Civic Theatre onFriday, July 6 and to cel-ebrate we have a copy of theCD — Greatest Hits: TheRoad Less Traveled — togive away.

An excellent cover tune, astirring rendition of TomPetty’s Refugee, beginsGreatest Hits: The RoadLess Traveled , whichswiftly switches gears toEtheridge’s early work, including the restless BringMe Some Water and the road-trip narrative You Can SleepWhile I Drive.

The disc also touches onthe singer/songwriter’smost successful singles (therollicking I’m the Only One, IWant To Come Over and theanthemic Come to My Win-dow), before settling intoEtheridge’s triumphant post-cancer tracks, most notablyher fierce take on JanisJoplin’s Piece of My Heart, and the determined I Run forLife. (‘They cut into my skin, and they cut into my body, but they will never get apiece of my soul’).

A concise overview ofEtheridge’s catalogue withplenty of previouslyunreleased material, Great-est Hits: The Road LessTraveled is sure to pleaselongtime fans, and it servesas an ideal introduction forthose unfamiliar with theperformer’s potent brand ofrock.

As one of the mostprominent women in rock,Melissa Etheridge has blazed

a striking path through thegenre with her soulful, grittyvoice and formidable guitarplaying.

In 1993, Etheridge tookthe bold step of coming outas a lesbian, and, in 2004, sheshowed even more tenacityby successfully battlingbreast cancer.

This (mostly)chronologically ordered17-track compilation pre-sents highlights fromEtheridge’s remarkablecareer.

Those who saw her sup-porting the Eagles back inthe mid 90’s or caught her

follow-up solo tour are stillraving about the power andpoignancy her live showdelivers.
