children’s outerwear for local, regional, European and the American markets. Adriaan also has sales experience
in European / Australian and regional markets. This included screentone printing, dyed and finished woven

and ran the Woolworths retail franchise stores in Zimbabwe. From 2002 Adriaan has worked for the Ninian &

sleepwear, thermal wear and sportswear. In 2006 appointed Director on the Ninian & Lester Board. In 2007

finishing of knitted fabrics; printing of knitted fabrics; markets and manufacturing processes involved in

Anita has spent 28 years working in various areas of the CTFL value chain, with a specific focus on the Fashion,
Clothing, Textile, and Footwear Sectors. She spent 8 years doing Planning, Supervision, Production Mgt,
Cutting Room Mgt and Work Study Mgt; this was followed by 2 years in Retail as an Area Manager; 9 years in
HE as a lecturer, the Co-ordinator of the KZN CoE for C&T and HoD: C&T Technology. Therafter Anita spent 2
years in clustering & business-turnaround consulting. Anita also jointly ran a CMT clothing factory in Durban.
Anita was for 4 years the DD: C&T for the WC DEDT, as well as the Acting Director over Manufacturing. Anita

Beauty started working at Map Clothing as a cleaner, and thereafter was promoted as a machinist. She then
worked at I M Lockhart as a machinist, and thereafter was promoted as a sample machinist. Currently she is
working for Prestige ( TCI ) as a sample machinist. During her years in the clothing industry, Beauty became
acutely aware of the production processes and gained valuable knowledge in enhancing the clothing industry.
Beauty is very keen to join the labour movement and therefore got involved more in management negotiations,
her reason why she became elected in a number of leadership positions in the union. Many years down the line
Beauty became a board member of a company called Zenzeleni. This is a company that was opened by the
union after massive retrenchments that took place in the late 90’s and early 80’s. This is the position that she is
still holding currently. As a trade unionist, Beauty has travelled around the world and came to a profound
realisation and build up her management capacity to understand what the role of a labour movement, and of

Etienne has worked in SACTWU’s research department since 2001, focusing on the union’s jobs campaign. On
a daily basis, he deals with matters of industrial policy and measures, trade policy and instruments, procurement
and factory interventions, aimed at saving and growing clothing and textile jobs. While at the union, Etienne has
been involved in several major industry initiatives including the discussions to construct a Customised Sector
Programme, applications to government to introduce quotas on certain Chinese imports and to increase duties
on certain clothing products, negotiations with clothing retailers and asset managers on procurement,
discussions between employers and the union to set up a Productivity Institute at the clothing bargaining council
and negotiations between the clothing and textile industry on textile tariffs. He has been responsible for
numerous submissions to the competition authorities on mergers, to ITAC on regulations, import duties and
rebates, to the Davis Tax Committee on South Africa’s tax system, to SARS on new legislation and to various
parliamentary committees on government’s trade and industrial policies. Etienne has also served on many task
teams at Nedlac, various bodies at the former CTFL SETA and am currently serving as a part-time
Commissioner at ITAC. From 2012 to early 2015, Etienne worked on a part-time basis at the Economic
Development Department on matters of social dialogue, trade and industry interventions. There, served on inter-
governmental task teams on poultry, iron and steel and set-top boxes and was responsible for the
conceptualisation and implementation of a programme to beneficiate scrap metal.

January 1988 (26 years 9 months). Appointed as CEO of Aranda Learnership FET College in 2009 in addition
to HR responsibility. The College offers 52 Learnerships in the CTFL Sector on a national basis and was
awarded the status of an ISOE in 2011 by the CTFL SETA. Developed a re-structured national bargaining
framework for the Textile Industry in 2001 and negotiated its constitution with the Union to secure the autonomy
of nine Sub-sectors to agree their own wages and conditions of employment. The National Textile Bargaining
Council was founded in 2003. Was appointed the Chairman of the Textile Industry Training Board in 1998, and
subsequent Chairman of the CTFL SETA from 2000 to 2010. Currently serving as Textile Employer
Representative on the FP&M SETA Board since 2013. Aranda Textile Mills received an award as winner of the
best practice skills development company in the CTFL Sector during 2007 – 2009 and one of the top three skills
development best practice companies in South Africa during the same period. Acted as Project Manager for the
development of 70 Learnerships in the CTFL Sector during 2000 and 2004. Currently in use in the CTFL Sector.
Currently acting as the Project Manager in developing 26 Textile Operator Qualifications covering the full

Graham matriculated at Durbanville High School in 1978 with exemption. He has been involved in all aspects of
clothing manufacturing and has been part of the National Clothing Industry Value chain for the past 33 years.
His career in the clothing industry started in clothing production in November 1982 where he joined PEP
manufacturing and completed most of his training. In 1982, he attended the Cape Technicon, Institute of
Marketing Management course. In 1984, he joined House of Monatic as a Trouser Floor Manager and in 1987
joined Pals Clothing as their Factory Manager. Graham started Prestige Clothing on 6 February 1989, and has

Greg James, Founder of SAGITTA GROUP AND JAG FOUNDATION. In 1994 Greg left South Africa to launch
what became a strong international career with Glencore International in Switzerland where he managed
Mergers & Acquisition in the Coal Division. Under Greg’s expert guidance and vision coal assets in Colombia,
Australia and South Africa were added to Glencore’s portfolio. Over an eight-year period, Glencore became the
world’s largest producer of export thermal coal in 2001. In addition he successfully brokered the deals that saw
the sale of coal mines in South Africa and Australia to Xstrata. These sales led to the firm’s listing on the London
Stock Exchange (LSE). Greg also achieved a merger of Glencore’s Colombian coal assets with Rio Tinto
Colombian coal mines and upped its annual rollout from 3 million to 30 million tonnes. He also successfully led
negotiations with the Colombian Government to gain access to the rail and port infrastructure in the country. On
his return to South Africa in 2006, Greg established the Sagitta Group, which acquired Cycle Lab and Prosport
international (Pty) Ltd. He was also appointed as CEO of Central Rand Gold in July 2007 and took this junior
exploration to a main board listing on the London Stock Exchange. After obtaining the mining licence and pour
the first gold Greg left CRG in December 2009, to focus on CRG and the JAG Foundation. Also during this time

Herman Pillay is the Chairman and the Chief Executive Officer of Trade Call Investments Apparel (Pty)
Limited. He has been involved in the Clothing & Textile Industry for the last twenty one (21) years. In
1996 he opened his first company, which was a production consulting and co-ordinating company that serviced
twenty eight (28) CMT factories (Cut, Make & Trim) throughout Kwa-Zulu Natal servicing the local Retailers.

Retail, Transport & Logistics and IT Solutions. Herman engaged with the Department of Land Reform &
Rural Development to train, develop and empower rural communities in the nine (9) Provinces of South
Africa by building a sustainable value chain in the sector. He introduced Cotton SA to The Department
of Rural Development and Land Reform in 2011, with the objective of creating a value chain from cotton
farming right down to the clothing retailers. In 2011, he expanded his clothing business operations into the
Western Cape by opening Trade Call Investments (Pty) Limited and by 2012 he had three
additional factories established, two in central Cape Town and one in Darling, Swartland. In June 2013,

local Retailers of South Africa, Herman Pillay together with SACTWU, saved around two thousand two hundred
and seventy four (2,274) jobs in the textile sector. In six (6) months he grew employment by a further seven
hundred (700) employees. Today Trade Call Investments Apparel (Pty) Limited has over three
thousand (3,000) employees and is on a major expansion drive with a vision to create a sustainable business
model within the Clothing & Textile Industry in South Africa, thereby contributing to the
reindustrialisation of this sector. Herman firmly believes that developing skills in people is the new currency of

Prior to this, he part-time lectured at the University of Cape Town.
Simon also engages in research and policy advocacy in a range of matters relevant to the CTFL manufacturing

campaigns, they support and initiate various supply-side and demand-side interventions in companies and the

Rajen worked as a Trade Unionist for approximately 20 years. Ten ( 10) years ago, he entered the Clothing
Manufacturing Industry, employing 12 people and currently employing 180 people. He is a founding member of
the Coastal Clothing Manufacturers’ Association. Rajen currently serve as the Chairperson of the Coastal
Clothing Manufacturers’ Association. The CCMA has organised small businesses in the SMME, mainly referred
to as cmt’s. Apart from articulating the interests at the National Bargaining Council, the Coastal Clothing
Manufacturers’ Association has adopted a developmental agenda with regards to its membership. The Coastal
Clothing Manufacturer’s Association also practices a collectivist approach to its membership, leveraging the
skills and opportunities in some members to help develop others. Rajen currently serves as an Executive
member of the National Bargaining Council and its various sub committees but more recently, he is a member of
the task team to develop Productivity Institute for the Clothing Manufacturing Sector in South Africa. Rajen has
had engagements with Cotton SA and the Department of Land Affairs and Rural Development, jointly, to
develop the Textile Industry through cotton growing in South Africa. His experience has taught him that a re-
industrialisation program is vital and critical for the Clothing Manufacturing Sector and ultimately for the

Zayd Tayob while at school, worked in his father’s textile factory which was known as the Crimp Fabriek in
Laudium. After school he attended the University of Witwatersrand were he completed a BSc majoring in
Computer Science. He worked as a system Analyst Programmer for Gencor Consolidated Mines for two years
before joining the family business. In 1994 he completed his MBL through UNISA School of Business
Leadership. His dissertation was titled “The competitiveness of the Textile Mill Industry in South Africa” which
gave him a huge insight on the state of the industry at the time and also lead me to enter into the manufacturing
sector of the industry. His progress in the Textile industry was leapfrogged when during one of his many visits to
Turkey he had the opportunity of meeting Mr Ahmed Zorlu from the Zorlu group of companies, with whom he
entered into a joint venture to open a vertically integrated home textile factory in South Africa lasting 13 years
growing the company into a player in the industry. During this time valuable skills were transferred from Turkey
to South Africa and was exposed to the entire Zorlu textile operations in Turkey, France, USA, Germany, India
and China. Today the company is an owned South African company employing 250 people encompassing 19
000 square meters in Sunderland Ridge, Pretoria. The international textile knowledge which Zayd has obtained
being exposed to a conglomerate such as Zorlu and the research on the Chinese Home Textile manufacturing
sector gave him a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses. Qualifications: University of
Witwatersrand were he completed a BSc majoring in Computer Science. In 1994 he completed his MBL through
