GONE FISHINGby Rick Dandes
There is an old and wise Chinese proverb that says, “If you want happiness
for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing.” For anglers, nothing
more need be said. This week, Tidbits casts a long look at one of life’s
great pleasures: fishing. F It’s one of the best fishing spots in the world: Port Loring in the Almaguin Highlands in Ontario, Canada. If you go there, expect to find species like small mouth bass, large mouth bass and northern pike. There is a series of lakes giving fishermen 100 miles of shoreline with great fishing spots.F Fishing for small mouth bass? Most experts advise that if possible, always cast upstream. This gives the bait a natural appearance, plus it will come from a direction that the bass are expecting. When you bring your lure by a fallen tree or a little pocket on the down side of a rock, you’ve put “food” exactly where the fish are waiting for a meal. In most cases, they’ll grab it before it gets by them.F What may be the largest fish ever hooked and landed in America is described in a book, “Fishes and Fishing in Louisiana,” by James Gowanloch (1933). Gowanloch tells how Captain Jay Gould captured a manta ray that measured 19 feet, 9 inches (6 meters) from wing-tip to wing-tip. Even more amazing: The manta ray’s weight was estimated at a hefty 5,500 pounds (2,395 kilograms).F Bet you were upset the last time you snagged and lost a $5 or $10 (U.S.) fishing lure. Imagine then how you might feel if you used a Million Dollar Lure from MacDaddy Fishing Lures. This 12-inch (30.5 centimeters) trolling lure, designed to catch marlin, is crafted with just over 3 pounds (1.4 kg) of glimmering gold and platinum and encrusted with 100 carats of diamonds and rubies (4,753 stones to be exact). Cost? Just as the name says — a cool $1 million (U.S.).F Casting call: In July 1999, Brent Olgers of Macon, GA, established a world record for the longest period of consecutive casting. Using a Zebco 33 Classic reel, Olgers cast 6,501 times in just over 24 hours,

There’s another study out comparing seniors with younger age groups. This time the research was on social dilemmas and conflicts, and predicting how they would turn out — in other words, wisdom.
Researchers broke participants into three age groups: 25-39, 40-59 and 60-plus. Subjects then read fake newspaper articles about different types of interpersonal conflict. Then they were asked questions like, “What do you think will happen next?” Later, the participants were called back for more tests. This time they read letters from an advice columnist and were asked questions such as, “What do you think should be done?”
The results were broken into wisdom-related categories, such as searching for compromise, recognizing change, taking into account the perspective of others and searching for a resolution.
The researchers worked blind when they tabulated the results: They didn’t know the subject’s age group.
So what did this study show? It proves what we already knew, that we seniors are able to take information we’ve accumulated over a lifetime and make wise decisions, especially when it comes to
conflicts. We’re better able than our younger counterparts to compromise, admit it when we just don’t know something, take into consideration the viewpoints of others and make accurate predictions about how situations will turn out.
So, what do we do with our wisdom, now that it’s been acknowledged? A few ideas come to mind:
• Act as mediators for divorcing couples or squabbling families.
• Work with groups of schoolchildren, the younger the better, on understanding the viewpoint of others.
• Work as advisers to young couples with unhealthy spending patterns, or in culture conflict resolution in companies.
While some of us already work in roles such as these, what we really need now is for more “wisdom” positions to be developed.

Dog Life Vests, Safety BeltsBy Sam Mazzotta
Several years ago, a frightening incident inspired automotive safety specialist Christina Selter to found BarkBuckleUP, a program that promotes pet safety.
“We had a near-accident with our dogs in the car. (We were) only traveling about 2 mph from a stop sign, when a car ran a red light and our little Betty fell off the seat. (She) wasn’t hurt, but didn’t want to be on the seat or in the car. It took some time to get her confident again.”
Selter, who has an SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) certification, created BarkBuckleUP to remind owners to restrain their pets properly in the car, using safety belts specially designed for pets. She travels the U.S. throughout the year, promoting the message and working with police and fire departments to support the safety program.
BarkBuckleUP also focuses on other safety issues, and Selter wants pet owners to stay aware. May is National Water Safety Month, and she reminds owners to keep a close eye on their pets while playing near or in the water.
While explaining that most dogs love water, she warns, “Dogs get tired just like us. They need to take breaks.”
Dogs also should wear a pet life vest when on the water with owners — in a boat or other watercraft, for example.
To keep dogs healthy, wash them off after they’ve finished their swim. “A few years ago in California at a pet event, there was a huge breakout of hot spots (on dogs) after going into the ocean,” Selter says. “Clean their fur thoroughly and their feet. Clean them off every time.”
The BarkBuckleUP website (www.BarkBuckleUP.com) features safety products for pets, including restraints for dogs and for pet carriers, life vests, first-aid kits, and more.

Thought of the Week“Everybody believes in something and
everybody, by virtue of the fact that they believe in something, use that something to
support their own existence.” — Frank Zappa
z It was Pulitzer Prize-winning American author John Steinbeck, best known for “The Grapes of Wrath” and “Of Mice and Men,” who made the following sage observation: “The writer must believe that what he is doing is the most important thing in the world. And he must hold to this illusion even when he knows it is not true.”z If you’re planning a summer trip to Maine, you won’t want to miss the stunning tourist attraction to be found on Peaks Island. There you’ll find an entire museum devoted to housing a rather extensive collection of umbrella covers.z In the United States, January is the least popular month for weddings.z If you’ve never heard of the quagga, don’t blame yourself. The creature, once found on the plains of Africa, has been extinct since 1883. An
odd-looking creature, this subspecies of zebra was once thought to be half-zebra, half horse. Though the front part of its body had the zebra’s stripes, those stripes faded out mid-body and the rest of the equine looked remarkably like a common horse.z It’s been claimed that 19th-century English naturalist Charles Darwin devoted eight years to studying the lowly barnacle.z We all know that the day after Thanksgiving is commonly known as Black Friday, thanks to all the crowds seeking out deals on Christmas gifts, but have you ever wondered how it got that name? It seems that the moniker originated back in 1965 when the Philadelphia police department came up with the name after having to deal with the traffic jams and shopping crowds.

GONE FISHING (continued):averaging 270 casts per hour. Each cast had to be at least 45 feet (13.7 m) in length. F Best prize for a record fish happened in March 2006, during the Texas Carp Challenge. That’s when angler Al St. Cyr landed a 43.13-pound (19.6 kilogram), state-record common carp in Austin’s Town Lake. That fish earned St. Cyr a $250,000 (U.S.) payday from the American Carp Society, the largest prize ever for a carp fisherman in the United States.F The eyes have it: Why do bass often strike a lure right after being released and not remember it? Because a bass has two memory centers, one for each eye. For example, the first time a bass hits your lure he sees it with his right eye; if he hits it again right away, more than likely he saw it with the left eye.F King salmon, or Chinook salmon, are the largest of the Alaskan salmon, typically 25–50 lbs. (11.3–22.7 kg). The world-record King salmon was caught on the Kenai River, in Alaska. It weighed 97 lbs. 4 oz (44.1 kg). F Man’s interest in the yellowfin tuna is an ancient one. Research on the tuna’s migration, feeding and spawning practices began in the sixth century B.C. by Greek fishermen who prized their delicate flesh.F The oldest known painting of a fisherman using a rod is from Egypt and dated at about 2000 B.C.
Claudius Aelian (170–235 AD), a Roman author and teacher, mentions trout fishing with artificial flies with hooks in Macedonia. Fly-fishing has been around for more than 2,000 years. There is even evidence of the use of flies tied on bone hooks as early as 1400 B.C. in Egypt.F Shark fishermen beware: Sharks attack about 50 to 75 people each year worldwide, with perhaps 8 to 12 fatalities, according to data compiled in the International Shark Attack File. Although shark attacks get a lot of attention, this is far less than the number of people killed each year by elephants, bees, crocodiles, lightning or many other natural dangers. F Ice fishing is one of the only sectors of fishing that continues to grow rapidly, at a pace of 10 to 15 percent a year. F More than 90 percent of the rainbow trout sold in the United States is farm raised.F The largest brown trout weighed over 40 pounds (18.1 kg) and was caught in Arkansas on May 9, 1992.F The blue whale is the largest animal on our planet (exceeding the size of the greatest known dinosaurs) and has a heart the size of a Volkswagen. But it is not a fish; it’s a mammal.F The oarfish is the longest bony fish in the world. It has a snake-like body sporting a magnificent red fin along its length, a horse-like face and blue gills, and accounts for many sea-serpent sightings.

F A buck tail jig is a very simple lure that resembles a small minnow. They are often carried in survival packs, similar to the ones pilots have with them, because they are so effective. As the name implies, they are jigs tied with the hair of a buck deer’s tail. F Famous fish? Benson the carp was found floating in Bluebell Lakes near Peterborough, England. Benson was famous as England’s biggest fish and had been caught at least 60 times. F The biggest saltwater fish ever documented for an International Game Fish Association (IGFA) world fishing record was caught in 1959 by Alfred Dean of Irymple, Victoria, Australia. The white shark he snagged off Ceduna, South Australia, weighed 2,664 lbs. (1,208 kg). It was an IGFA all-tackle record and a 130 lb. (59 kg) line class record.F Catfish are the only animals that naturally have an odd number of whiskers.
Here are some simple steps you can take to go green on your fishing boat: Eliminate costly toxic cleaners, lubricants and hydraulic oils on your vessel. Ask your local marine retailer to recommend earth-friendly products that are certified environmentally preferable.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Kasey Kahne is headed to Hendrick Motorsports, but it’s kind of complicated.Kahne, 30, has already
driven for three teams in the Sprint Cup Series — without ever moving. He began with Evernham Motorsports, which became Gillett Evernham, which became Richard Petty Motorsports. All along, Kahne drove No. 9, but he started in a Dodge and this year changed to a Ford.Considered one of the sport’s more talented drivers, it’s no surprise that Kahne is moving to Hendrick Motorsports once his contract at RPM expires at the end of the season, but he’s not moving there directly, or at least, that’s the current spin.Next year Kahne will drive for a team not yet announced — Stewart Haas Racing, a Hendrick satellite of sorts, is most often mentioned — while Mark Martin completes his contractual commitment at Hendrick. Kahne will not actually join Hendrick proper until 2012. Or so it is currently assumed.Kahne is willing to wait a year, apparently, in order
to join the team that produced the top three finishers — Jimmie Johnson, Martin and Jeff Gordon — in last year’s Chase.“To be in the position I’m in now and know where I’m going to be in 2012, to have the opportunity with Rick Hendrick and everybody at Hendrick
Kasey Kahne announced that he will head to Hendrick Motorsports in 2012, complicating a team
roster that includes Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Mark Martin. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)
Kasey Kahne to Detour on Way to HendrickMotorsports, to me, it’s an unbelievable opportunity. I can’t wait to get that started.”Beyond the announcement of Kahne joining Hendrick in 2012, little is known. Martin has declared he isn’t retiring. Tony Stewart has said he has made no arrangements to have Kahne join him and Ryan Newman, and other scenarios (JR Motorsports, also Hendrick aligned, moving up from Nationwide to Cup being one) are similarly denied or, at least, played down. No one knows whether or not Kahne will take his crew chief, Kenny Francis, along with him — wherever that is.“I’ll work through it with Mr. Hendrick and figure out exactly what we need to do that makes the most sense,” said Kahne.

STRaIghT TaLk abOuT DEbTAnytime somebody talks about having a “strategy” to get out of debt, it pays to be leery. There are scams galore, including those that promise (for a fee) to take your payments and make arrangements with lenders to accept a smaller amount each month. (Unless you send the check yourself, you really don’t know where it’s going.)However, there’s a new book out that talks about strategy, and it’s one you can trust: “Debt-Free Forever (Take Control of Your Money and Your Life)” by Gail Vaz-Oxlade (Collins, $14.95). There’s a lot of no-nonsense tough love in Vaz-Oxlade’s plans, and there should be if a strategy to reduce debt is going to succeed. After all, the average consumer has $16,000 in credit-card debt. But under the humor (yes, there’s that, too) is a sound plan. She tells you upfront that it’s going to be hard work, right in the first line of Chapter One, then moves quickly into the all-important first step: Find out where your money’s going (spreadsheets are provided in the book).Step two, facing your debt, is where Vaz-Oxlade takes things beyond the typical “get out of debt” book. Not only are debts written down and categorized, they’re critiqued and analyzed for what they really cost. There is plenty of hands-on help. Focus on long-term goals. Decide what you really want, because with debt control, it matters. Write down your core values, prioritize and set a goal. Find friends who are compatible with that goal (spending less to have fun). Swap bad habits for good ones.“Debt-Free Forever” explains how to get a handle on disappearing money (what happens when the pocket monster eats all the change when you break a $20), 401(k) plans, insurance, credit cards and more. There are worksheets, guidelines, instructions on how to make a budget — everything you need to become debt free, except for a pencil, piece of paper and a calculator.Vaz-Oxlade has a television show called “Til Debt Do Us Part” (about couples in debt) on CNBC and has written 11 books on finances. As she says on her blog: “Money is only a tool. You can use it to your advantage or you can misuse it to your detriment. You decide.”

DEaR DR. DONOhuE: What can you tell me about a low sodium level? My visiting friend (from England) was refused embarkation on his cruise because he was acting belligerent and confused. The ship’s doctor sent him to a hospital. He had scans, an EEG and numerous blood and urine tests. Everything was normal except he had low sodium. His insurance carrier sent a doctor from England to accompany him on a flight back to London. He has since seen his own doctor. His sodium level has risen. What happened to him? — B.L.aNSWER: Sodium has many functions. It keeps body fluids at the right level. It maintains blood pressure. It’s essential for muscle contractions. It participates in generating the heartbeat. It carries a positive electric charge, so it balances the negatively charged body substances. A drop in blood sodium leads to fatigue, nausea and weakness. If the level dips farther, people become confused and dizzy. At very low levels, they could have a seizure and lapse into a coma. Your friend’s doctor has the task of finding out why your friend’s sodium level fell. In quite a few instances, it comes about from an inappropriate release of a body hormone called ADH, antidiuretic hormone. This hormone stops kidney urine production. The result is too much water in
the body. The extra water dilutes sodium and produces a low reading. Liver diseases, troubles with the adrenal glands and a sluggish thyroid gland are other causes for a lowering of blood sodium.Restoring the body’s sodium content is not too difficult. Tracking the reason why it dropped is.Has your friend’s mental function normalized now that his sodium level has returned to normal? If it has not, then his doctor has to look for explanations of his erratic behavior that have nothing to do with his sodium. The booklet on sodium and potassium explains why these minerals are so important and what happens when they are out of kilter. One day, while driving home from his fishing trip in the pouring rain, a man got a flat tire outside a
monastery. A monk came out and invited him inside to have dinner and spend the night. The
motorist graciously accepted. That night he had a wonderful dinner of fish and chips. He decided to
compliment the chef. Entering the kitchen, he asked the cook, “Are you the fish friar?” No,
came the reply. “I’m the chip monk.”
