Girls Basketball Tryouts will begin Oct. 30th. All interested ladies must have a completed Sports Packet with updated sports physical on file. Please see Coach Hawkins if you are interested in signing up.

Any students interested in participating on the track team, there is an informational and sign-up meeting this Friday during learning ops in Coach Cerney's room, 2-211.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Central Florida Dreamplex is seeking current freshman, sophomore, and junior level high school students for its StarGazers volunteer program. The Dreamplex is a fitness and recreation center for children and adults with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. Only 15-20 volunteers will be chosen to be StarGazers, and the program will span one year (January-December, 2018) and result in at least 100 community service hours for each participant. First aid, CPR, and other training will be provided at no cost. The ideal candidate will be an individual who loves to work with children and is interested in therapeutic services, special education, or other related fields as a career choice. Those chosen to be StarGazers will assist with Dreamplex sports and recreational programs, and will have the opportunity to shadow physical, speech, and occupational therapists. Completed applications may be submitted by email to cgomes@cfldreamplex.com or dropped off at the Dreamplex, located in the Clermont Hillside Terrace complex (same building as Graffiti Junktion) Applications are due by November 6th.

boycottNot on Speaking Terms Word of the Day:Every word type needs its poster child, and for eponyms a very good candidate is boycott. The verb came first: "to refuse to do business with, as a sign of disapproval." The inspiration was one Captain Charles Boycott (1832-97), an Irish land agent so treated in 1880, in an attempt by the Irish Land League to get a break on rent.

1765 - In the U.S., The Stamp Act Congress met and drew up a declaration of rights and liberties.

1781 - British General Charles Lord Cornwallis surrendered to U.S. General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia. It was to be the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War.

1812 - Napoleon Bonaparte's French forces began their retreat out of Russia after a month of chasing the retreating Russian army.

1814 - In Baltimore, MD, the first documented performance of "The Defence of Fort McHenry" with music took place at the Holliday Street Theatre. The work was later published under the title "The Star-Spangled Banner."

1914 - In the U.S., government owned vehicles were first used to pick up mail in Washington, DC.

1998 - Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson got his boxing license back after he had lost it for biting Evander Holyfield's ear during a fight.

2003 - In London, magician David Blaine emerged from a clear plastic box that had been suspended by a crane over the banks of the Thames River. He survived only on water for 44 days. Blaine had entered the box on September 5.

2006 - The Dow Jones industrial average ended the day at 12,011.73. It was the first close above 12,000.

2009 - The international version of Amazon's Kindle 2 was released.
