What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

Through-out both the filming and editing process for our thriller

opening of ‘The Thicket’ I have learnt a lot about the different

technologies which I have been using.

In order to edit our film we used Final Cut, I had used this

program before to edit previous media pieces but from this task I

have learnt a lot more about the functions which can be used

within the program in order to create a better film.

FiltersWhen we watched our film back, we noticed that

during the bedroom scene thelighting did not look right for the time of day

which we wanted to portray it tobe. This affected the atmosphere significantly

and made it look a lot lessrealistic. We wanted the audience to know that it

was early in the morning, however, the lighting suggested that it was in the

evening.

This is when we were introduced to filters. By using filters we were able to use the‘colour correction’ tool in order to change the overall colour of the scene. By

doing thiswe were able to create a more ‘fresh’ light which would normally be associated

with themorning. This made it appear much more realistic and stopped any further

confusionfor the audience.

TitlesI had imported titles into a film on Final Cut before, however I had notknown how to import a font. After looking at different font styles onwww.dafont.com, we had come across some really good ideas. We

wanted thefont for our titles to be significant towards the narrative of our film. Wefound a font which fit the criteria perfectly. This particular font was

chosenas the ‘school-like’ image it gave off helped with the characterisation of

the girlwho featured in our opening.

We were able to download this font and import it into our film, something

which I had not know you could do before. In order to do this we clicked‘download’ on the website and saved it to the computer. We then

imported itinto Final Cut and were able to successfully use it in our film opening.

In order to make the titles fit in with our opening we made

it so that they would appear on-screen in time with thesoundtrack which we had added.

We added a ‘type-writer’ effect to make it appear as thoughthey were being typed onto the screen, complimenting the‘school-style’.

SoundIn order to create a soundtrack for effect we used the program

‘Garage Band’. This enabled us to createa soundtrack using many different instruments so that it would fit

in with the film clip which we wantedit to complement. At the bottom of the screen there are many different tracks to choose from. Once we had chosen which track we wanted to include, we were able to select it and drag it to the timeline at the top. I learnt that not only were we able to customise the timing of the soundtrack, but we were able to build up many different layers in order to built up a unique one to fit in best with our film

I also learnt how to change the volume of certain tracks

so that certain tracks could be heard over the other, or so

that the whole soundtrack could be more quiet so that the

main focus can remain on the diegetic sound, in our case,

the spade.
