HIGH SPEED

HIGH SPEED

I have conducted some research into how to create high speed photography and have sourced a number of different high speed photographs that have been produced using a very specific technique. I thought that I would try to create some of my own high speed photographs because I really like the way in which certain moments that the eye cannot see because they happen in an instant can be immortalized using this type of photography, I think that there is a lot of potential for me to be as creative as possible with using this technique and I would really like to try and use it when creating my final images.

In order for me to create my own high speed photographs I had to research exactly how to create this effect, I found out that the key to high speed photography is shutter speed, lighting and the use of a tripod. I found out that in order to capture a specific moment in time using a camera, the shutter speed has to be extremely fast, this is because the longer your shutter is open for means that there is more time to capture the image, meaning that if you were to take a photograph with a shutter speed of 1/125th of a second a moving object would become blurred within the image. However if you were to take a photograph at 1/1000th of a second the image would have perfect focus and the moment would be captured perfectly. Baring this in mind it is very important that the image is taken with a tripod to avoid any camera shake as this would effect any image taken with such a high shutter speed. The aperture of the camera must also be extremely high, this is because as much light as possible must be let into the camera in order to create a photograph of high quality, which a high speed photograph must be. Because of this the image will have to be taken in a pitch black room using a flash in order to ensure that the lighting of the image is not ruined my the large aperture.

When creating my own image I make sure that I had applied all of these techniques so that I could create a good high speed photograph and to help further my understanding of the workings of a DSLR camera.

HIGH SPEED

The image that I produced while using the techniques for high speed photography worked with regards to capturing a moment in time with high focus and quality, however due to the facilities I had to work with the image itself is not the kind of image that I would submit, this image is purely en experimental tester image in order for me to understand how to create high speed photography myself. Baring this in mind I believe that I have achieved this very well, the pieces of paper in this image have been captured and look as if they are suspended in mid-air.

I really enjoyed looking into this type of experimental photography and can imagine that I could develop this technique further and create and image with depth and of a high quality when creating my final images for this unit. I find this technique of experimental photography very useful.

SCANOGRAPHY

SCANOGRAPHY

I have chosen to also look into the experimental technique of Scanography photography. In order to end up creating my own images using a scanner I had to conduct some research into how to create the images and decided to look at current photographs that have been produced in order to see the effect that can be achieved. There are two different ways in which a scanner can be used to create experimental photographs, because of the fact that a scanner is used to take very detailed images of a high quality, this means that it can pick up the smallest detail and anything that is pressed to the scanner glass is crystal clear, this means that some images can be produced with some parts of the image being in focus and some not, also due to the fact that the scanner has glass, it can be quite interesting to have things squashed and pressed up to the glass. Some of the images that I have sourced display this technique well.

The other way in which a scanner can be used to create experimental images is if you were to focus ion the fact that the scanner camera is a moving object which takes one image or a certain perimeter. Imagine having a camera with a very slow shutter speed and moving it slowly to the side, objects would become elongated and warped, making the object seem unusual and abnormal. some photographers have used this to their advantage and created some images that are very interesting and are most certainly experimental.

SCANOGRAPHY

This experiment was created by using a scanner/printer. I created the photograph by following the scanner light with my hand/face which meant that the photograph is elongated, warped and not a ‘normal’ or conventional photograph. I think that this technique is very interesting, however I do not think that I will use this technique when creating my own experimental photographs, as I think it would be difficult to create an image themed on discovery. However if I needed to take an image of a small object in order for it to be detailed I would definitely consider using this technique as the images that are produced using this technique are very clear and detailed.

Although scanography is usually very clear and of a high quality, when producing my images I used a scanner and printed off the image that I produced, then have used a scanner of a low quality in order to be able to submit it electronically, this is why my images seem to be of a bad quality, where as in reality they are of a high resolution.
