LONG TIME EVENT DIRECTOR DEPARTS Mark Perry to leave after sixteen Targa Events

Long time Event Director Mark Perry recently announced that the 2013 Targa Wrest Point was to be his last as Event Director Given that Perry was instrumental in the creation of the second Targa event in 2009 it was a fitting event for him to finish on After competing in Targa Tasmania from 1997 to 2004 Perry joined the Targa team as Event Director in 2006 He lead the team for the first time in 2007 when Eric Bana made Targa famous around the world firstly with lsquothat crashrsquo and then with his movie Love The Beast that followed in 2008 2009 saw the first of the new Targa events with Targa Wrest Point debuting with 113 entries 2010 saw the presumed impossible occur with the first ever Targa rally held in Victoria Targa High Country arrived to massive fanfare and an incredible 204 entries greeted the Mansfield Street Stage

After a five year build up the 20th anniversary Targa Tasmania delivered the first ever 300 car field with 334 entries leaving the official start in the heart of Launceston This was quickly followed by Targarsquos arrival in Adelaide Supaloc Targa Adelaide kicked off in August 2011 becoming the fourth Targa event and in turn forming the CAMS Australian Targa Championship Perry dreamed for many years of bringing the lsquoFlying Milersquo at Longford back to life and in 2011 his dream became a reality with the Longford Revival Festival being held for the first time Then just when the events division was at its largest the Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge returned under the management of Octagon to finish off a six major event year in 2011

Last year saw six events again along with operational support for Porschersquos Carrera Cup being added to the portfolio In all from 2007 to 2012 the events division has grown from a single event to six events under Perryrsquos leadership Mark leaves the business on March 15 to take up the senior role of Director ndash Promoted Events at V8 Supercars and ironically will return to Tasmania in early April to oversee his fist event in his new role the V8 round at Symmons Plains After a sixteen year association with Targa Tasmania Mark leaves with a heavy heart and we wish him well in his new career

With only six weeks to pass until the twenty second Targa Tasmania I am truly honored and thrilled to have been appointed custodian of not only this hugely important event but also the incredibly successful CAMS Australian Targa Championship stable During the past thirteen years with Octagon I have very much enjoyed the dream job that many enthusiasts would lust after working within the motorsport event management industry on cross-country desert rallies historic festivals touring and sports car circuit racing gravel rallying and of course my first love the production car based targa events Itrsquos my observation that many efforts have been made to mold and shape Targa Tasmania into various things by various people since its 1992 inception Most of those attempts have generally sat well at the given time but one thing has always rung true itrsquos the raw nature of the event that ensures Targa Tasmania remains the worldrsquos ultimate tarmac rally

Sure Targa Tasmania is prestigious and polished but itrsquos far from purposely flashy To me all rounds of the CAMS Australian Targa Championship are valuably rich in genuine challenge Targa is truly is a motorsport format where trophies must first be earned before they are won This is no better underscored than by the realisation that next month a gruelling 590 kilometres of narrow winding closed roads will need to be successfully covered before a single piece of silverware is presented to the deserving challengers

Since 2009 I have found huge reward and fulfillment as Sporting Director and Clerk of Course particularly in designing the courses that are now considered some of the worldrsquos best tarmac

rallies We have built highly successful events in Targa Adelaide Targa High Country and Targa Wrest Point and have grown the competitive distance of Targa Tasmania in line with its stature

As we begin a third decade the future is bright for the targa world There is still plenty of excitement to roll out in the years ahead With your input I personally look forward to shaping the future of our sport to ensure longevity accessibly desirability and importantly cost efficiency I very much look forward to seeing you in Tasmania this April but if you disappointingly canrsquot make it down this year I strongly encourage you to steer your web browser over to targacomau for all the latest live action All the best

Targa Source Stuart Benson Targa Group Director
