I would like to thank Mrs Carlson for organising a great week of activities for all students. Thanks also to all of the teachers who helped and got in to the spirit of Book Week. It was great to see the students and families enjoying themselves. I am currently working with the P&C to investigate before and after school care for 2014 and beyond. Earlier in the year I sent home a letter from Camp Australia about before and after school care and we had a poor response of only 30 families. This could have been due to lack of interest or it may have been the fact that many families thought it was junk mail. We are going to redo the survey (see attached flyer) and I would like to encourage you to spend a few minutes to complete it, as many families would like the convenience of a before and after school hours care service on site at our school. Camp Australia in conjunction with Tanilba Bay Public School is conducting the survey to determine the level of interest in offering a before and after school hours care service on the school campus during the school terms. Please visit https://www.research.net/s/tanilbabaypublicschoolb eforeafter Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting our Stage 2 students at ‘The Great Aussie Bush Camp’ and was very impressed with our students’ attitudes and behaviour. All staff and students had a fabulous trip and I have heard from staff and students that it was the best camp ever! Congratulations to Byron Moores and his family who won our Voluntary Contribution raffle in Education Week. The Moores family won two nights’ accommodation at Shoal Bay Resort and Spa. Enjoy! Thank you to all families who have paid the contribution this year. Payments can still be made through the front office and all funds raised go directly to resources that support your child’s learning. Congratulations and well done to our Wakakirri dancers who had a fabulous time performing at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney on Friday. I have heard our students performed to a high level and their behaviour on the day was exemplary. A big thank you to Mrs Carlson and Miss Haddad for their excellent organisation and choreography. Thanks also to all the parent helpers for making this event a huge success. Our students won the Sustainability Award on the day and were favourably mentioned by the judges for their environmental message. Congratulations to our Girls Rugby League Team who travelled to Macquarie University in Sydney yesterday to play in the finals of the NRL Legends Shield. Our girls came up against three very big and strong Sydney teams and acquitted themselves very well with an 8-0 loss, 18-6 win and an exciting 14- 14 draw. The girls got to meet NRL Legends Mario Fenech, Nathan Hindmarsh and Steve Turner and there are some great photos on our Facebook page and the NRL website. Stuart Wylie Principal Page 1

Thursday, 22 August 2013 Week 6 Term 3

Stage 1 It has been a very busy term for Stage One and the past two weeks have been no different. Last week Stage One had a fantastic day at the theatre watching ‘Possum Magic.’ It was a fabulous experience and we would like to thank Mrs Carlson for organising it. This week it is Book Week. The Wakakirri Dancers performed an engaging story dance on Monday to open this eventful week. The Book Character Parade is on Friday and students come dressed up as their favourite book character, with the book. Happy birthday to Blake Broadfoot, Cohen Badger, Zane Wills and Jesse Gregory. We hope you all had a special day. Thank you to the parents for your ongoing support of the Stage One teachers. 4S It has been an exciting past week for all of 4S! We had a blast at camp. There were so many great activities and a lot of fun had by all. Miss Schofield was talked into going on the Giant Swing! She only wanted to go half way up but 4S had other ideas!!! She was taken the whole way up and she screamed the whole way down! There were flying foxes and high ropes! There was delicious food! Jack Jarvis said “These hamburgers are better than McDonalds!” From all accounts it was “The BEST camp ever”. Miss Schofield was very proud of all the students’ behaviours and manners. Book Worm Corner What a fantastic week we have had so far celebrating book week and ‘Read Around the Universe!. The book fair has been a huge success and it is great to see so many students buzzing around about books!!. The book fair is open until Friday at 4:30pm and we have been replenishing the stock and bringing in new books every day, so even if you have bought a book, come and check us out again and see the new stock. Book Parade is on tomorrow, so get your costumes ready!!!. The parade will be at 2pm at the ovals. Don’t forget to bring along your book that your character comes from if you can. Wakakirri What a performance!!! The dancers performed at NIDA on Friday and the students of Wakakirri wowed the audience with their dance titled ‘Earth’s Balance’. A dance that told the story of man versus nature and how different our lives would be without the trees and flowers around us. All students behaved exceptionally well both on the bus, waiting around for rehearsals and walking to and from the theatre for dinner. It was an exciting day for all involved, learning about how to perform on a main stage, what it is like to speak in front of a large audience, supporting and helping each other and working together as a team in an environment completely unknown to them. Andrew McFarland a well-known Australian actor was our schools judge and spoke highly of the students and their performance and even likened our students who were workman as Masterchef Professionals gone mad!!. The Tanilba Bay students wonderful performance won them The Most Sustainable Award Production and were highly recognised for their concept, inspirational message, entertainment, props and sustainable practices in the production of their dance. All students involve should be extremely proud of themselves, as Miss Haddad and Mrs Carlson and your school is very proud too. We would like to thank all the parents who supported the dancers, assisted on the trip, lent us costumes and anyone who had involvement. A thank you goes out to the staff who supported the dancers with rehearsals and costuming and props. Together as a community we were able to provide

these students with an experience they will not forget.

Possum Magic Last Wednesday Early Stage One and Stage One went on an excursion to Civic Theatre in Newcastle to watch the much loved book ‘Possum Magic’ by Mem Fox as a part of our Book Week celebrations. The play was performed beautifully with actors and actresses dressed in white and using life size puppets told the story of Possum Magic. All students thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We then went over to the park for a lovely lunch and games with the sun shining down it made for a very enjoyable day.

Grandparent Reading Session On Tuesday we had many of our lovely grandparent and families visit our school to read and share stories with their grandchildren. We even had friends of our grandparents attend and read as well even though they did not have grandchildren at our school. Teachers also read and shared stories in this time. We would like to thank our grandparents for attending and enriching the lives of the students at Tanilba bay Public School. The students really enjoyed this time and showing their grandparents around their school.

If you would like your child to attend please pay at the office no later than 28th August. No late payments will be made. 5W A very big thank you to all of the families who assisted our children for Market Day this year. Your support is very much appreciated and the children had a fantastic day. I would like to congratulate the students on the recent Antarctica assignments. I have been very impressed with the amount of effort and pride that was put into their work. The information was well researched and written clearly in line with our focus on ‘Information Reports’. Well done! Lisa Wood “Way Out Market Day” Stage 3 students thoroughly enjoyed planning and running the “Way Out Market Day”. Our students planned their own stalls, and families contributed various items to make the day a success. We were very impressed with the variety of stalls that were

on offer as well as the range of activities that students could participate in. Mr Wylie, Mr King, Miss Haddad, Mrs Carlson, Jack Hagan and Abbye Irwin all put themselves in the firing line to support our year 6 students. A very big thank you for your time – hope you didn’t get too wet!! We would like to particularly thank our families for being so generous and supporting our students. Without your support the day would not have been as exciting or successful. Stage 3 Teachers

Mr Wylie braces himself for a sponge in the face! (Luckily for him, although it has been thrown with gusto, it will NOT hit the target this time!)

Fundraising Trivia Night – Saturday 24th August Don’t miss out on this great fun event – book a table NOW!! See the opposite page for more information. We will be running raffles and silent auctions in conjunction with this. We will also have the Father’s Day stall at the end of August so mark the 29th and 30th of August on your calendars. We have been approved to hold a BBQ on the election day, September 7th. If you would like one, simply place the money in an envelope and write on the front your name etc and make sure you write Entertainment Book on it as well. ONLY A FEW LEFT, SO BE QUICK!
