Healthy Food Rhyming Competition We have had a huge response to our Healthy Food Competition. Students in every Stage wrote fabulous rhymes about good food to eat. We even had some terrific videos submitted. Look out on Facebook for those! You will see the healthy messages posted around the school. Congratulations to the following winners Early Stage One Sam KP Stage One Stanley 2M Stage Two Hannah 4M Stage Three Lily 5D They each received a basket of healthy food to share with their families.

Stage 1 Excursion to Murrook and Stockton Bight On 6th June, all of Stage 1 visited Murrook Cultural Centre at Williamtown. We arrived at Murrook by bus and all the Worimi ‘aunties’ and ‘uncles’ greeted us as we arrived. We listened to Uncle Jonathan Lilly talk to us about Worimi culture, he told us some very interesting stories. After that, we split into groups to do activities like local traditional dancing, painting boomerangs, learning about bush medicines, boomerang throwing and learning about Aboriginal artefacts. We learnt so much about our local area and Aboriginal culture before the Europeans arrived in Australia. We were very hungry after these activities, so a lovely BBQ lunch was prepared for us by many of the Worimi ‘uncles’ and ‘aunties’. After lunch, we got back on the buses to visit the sand dunes at Stockton Bight. These dunes are very special to the Worimi people; it is a very special and sacred place because it holds many thousands of years of history and culture for Worimi People. We had a wonderful time on our excursion; the best part of the day for many children was running and sliding down the sand dunes. We were all very tired when we got back onto the bus to go back to school. It was an exciting and enjoyable day for students, teachers and parent helpers. See page 5 for more pictures!

5D I would like to congratulate all the children on their efforts this term. They have worked very well on developing their writing skills, reciting poetry with feeling, learning about democracy in Australia and honing their art skills. The highlight this term has been working with “The Highwayman” poem. The children have looked forward to various activities where they worked in groups and in pairs to break down the poem and discover the story. Recently we illustrated stanzas of the poem and created storyboard pictures. Two excellent examples are shown. The children explained what they enjoyed about the activity:- Ellie – “It brings the poem to life.” Kaitlyn – “Drawing the emotion that we have been learning about.” Isaac – “Using your imagination and it helped with picturing the storyline.” Casey - “Creating your own pictures for the storyline.” Peter – “It helped us to see more detail in the poem.” Kara – “Drawing the scene helped me to create the picture in my head from the words.” Have a wonderful break and see you next term for some more interesting, focused learning.

Reforms to P&C Federation The NSW Parliament has introduced legislation to reform the NSW Federation of Parent and Citizens Associations, which has suspended operation pending Supreme Court action. While these reforms will not affect the day-to-day operation of individual school P&Cs, they will introduce a new executive structure which will ensure the Federation operates as a modern and representative body on behalf of school P&C Associations. Each school’s P&C Association will be asked to vote for councillors and delegates who will represent their electorate at the Federation’s Annual General Meeting and councillors who will serve on the Federation’s Board of Management. More information will be available on the Department’s website at http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/gotoschool/a-z/involvement.php. Entertainment Book Entertainment books for 2014/2015 are now available to purchase. This year they can be purchased as a book or as a digital version for use on smart phones. Both copies are $60 each and money raised will be put towards the new blinds throughout the school. A flyer will be sent home with more details. Lucky Locals Card As a reminder, parents who may have missed the chance to buy their Lucky Locals card through the Term 4/Term 1 Fundraiser Flyer which was sent home can still buy a card at any time via the website luckylocals.com.au The Tanilba Bay Public School Fundraising Code is TBPS14. Uniform Shop Our uniform shop, located in the AV room is open Mondays 9am – 10am and on Wednesdays 2.30pm – 3pm

Don’t forget if you can’t make it on these days, you can also leave an order at the office and we will put it together for you next time the uniform shop is open and these can be sent home with your child. Next Meeting Our meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month at 3:15pm. Our next meeting will be Thursday 26th June in the library. All welcome to attend. Canteen News We will be launching an exciting new Winter menu next term. Copies of the new menu will go home to families shortly. In line with our commitment to serve healthy and nutritious meals all sandwiches are now made using delicious wholemeal bread. Many students have commented on how tasty their sandwiches are with the new bread! Thank you to all parents and community members who have volunteered in the canteen recently. We really appreciate your time and effort! Building healthy habits Children are learning habits that will often last them a lifetime. Consider the following: Breakfast is important. Children who eat

breakfast have better concentration. Eating breakfast can reduce snacking on high-energy foods in the afternoon in both adults and children.

Be realistic about the size of the serve you offer children. Forcing children to finish what is on their plate when they are not hungry may lead to overeating and/or strong food dislikes.

Serve meals or snacks at a table rather than in front of the television. Children and adults can miss their body’s cues when they are full and are more likely to overeat. Limiting television also reduces their exposure to junk food advertising.

Avoid giving children processed snack foods high in sugar. Encourage brushing teeth in the morning and before bed to develop good dental habits.

You play an important role in promoting healthy habits. Set a good example by eating healthy foods and enjoying regular exercise. It may not be apparent, but your child is watching you!
