TONIGHT’S GAMEThe Flyers start the 2015-16 season tonight with a visit to the Tampa Bay Lightning here at Amalie Arena.  The Flyers are starting off a10-game month of October with tonight’s contest, and over the course of tonight and tomorrow play the first two of only four road gameson the month.  This season starts off with one of two visits for the Flyers to Florida this season, both of which involve games against theLightning and Florida Panthers.  They’ll be in Sunrise on Saturday to take on Florida, and then will return here for a back-to-back setagainst the Lightning and Panthers on March 11-12.  After Saturday’s matchup against Florida, the Flyers will return home to host thePanthers on KIA Opening Night at the Wells Fargo Center on Monday, October 12. BROADCAST INFOTV: CSNRadio: 93.3 WMMR, ESPN 97.3 (Atlantic City, NJ) SEASON/ROAD OPENERSThe Flyers are opening the season on the road for the second consecutive year.  Last year they opened up in Boston, dropping a 2-1decision.  This is the first time the Flyers have ever opened their season against the Lightning and is also the first time they’ve openedthe year in the state of Florida at all.  The previous southern-most opener in Flyers history was the 2009-10 opener, which was a 2-0win at Carolina.  The Flyers have lost three consecutive opening night games – 3-1 at home vs. PIT in 2012-13 and 3-1 at home vs. TOR in 2013-14, inaddition to last year.  Prior to that, they had won three opening night games in a row.  The Flyers are 21-19-7 all-time in seasonopeners. The Flyers have also dropped three consecutive road openers – last year’s at Boston, along with a 4-1 setback at Montreal in 2013-14and a 5-2 loss in Buffalo in 2012-13.  Prior to that, the Flyers had gone 4-0-1 in the previous five seasons of road openers.  This is thefarthest south the Flyers have come for the first road game of the season since starting their away schedule in Atlanta in the 1979-80and 1976-77 seasons.  The Flyers are 20-16-11 all-time in road openers.  This is the third time in the last five seasons that the Flyers have served as the opponent for multiple home openers on their first roadtrip.  They did so at the start of the shortened 2012-13 season, when after opening at home they went to New Jersey (3-0 L) and then toBuffalo (5-2 L).  The season before, the Flyers did the same thing and swept both games, winning 2-1 at Boston before going to NewJersey and beating the Devils 3-0.  That season’s win over Boston was the last time the Flyers have been an opening night opponentfor a team raising a banner before the game.   vs. TAMPA BAY This is the first of three meetings between the two clubs this season.  The other two meetings will take place over the course of a weekin March; for the Flyers, it’s a home-and-home situation, but the Lightning take on the Bruins between the two games.  Mon 10/7 – PHI at TBLMon 3/7 – TBL vs. PHIFri 3/11 – PHI at TBL The teams also met three times last season.  10/30 at TBL – TBL 4, PHI 312/16 at PHI – TBL 3, PHI 11/12 at PHI – PHI 7, TBL 3 Claude Giroux led the Flyers in the season series last year with five assists, while Wayne Simmonds and Jake Voracek each hadtwo goals and two assists.  Michael Raffl also had two goals.  Steve Mason played the Dec. 16, 2014 game and absorbed a loss, making 20 saves on 22 shots.

Steve Mason had a solid preseason after posting a 2.25 GAA and a .928 save percentage last season.  Mason recorded the second-highest save percentage in Flyers history for a goaltender that played the majority of the team’s games in a given season.  The topthree are as follows:Player                                    Year                       GP          SV%Bernie Parent                       1973-74                 73           .933Steve Mason                       2014-15                 51           .928Roman Cechmanek           2002-03                 58           .923       Note: In 1967-68, Doug Favell (37 GP) and Bernie Parent (38 GP) split the 74-game season essentially in half, with Favell recording a.931 sv% and Parent recording a .926. Mason had the lowest full-season GAA for a Flyers goaltender since 2003-04, when Robert Esche finished the year with a 2.04 GAA. His 5-on-5 save percentage was the best in the NHL last year (.944) and his GAA in that situation of 1.73 was second-best in theleague, behind only Carey Price (1.67). The Flyers had the league’s best power play in the preseason, going 10-for-30 (33.3 pct).  Last season the unit was third-best in theNHL at 23.4 percent.  On home ice, the Flyers set a new franchise high of 28.0 percent, breaking the club’s previous high of 27.8 pctset in 2012-13 that covered seasons from 1982-83 until now.  (Home/road power play splits were first kept in 1982; Flyers teampercentages prior to that were not available.)
