Sl.No UNIT ACTIVITY
1 LARGE ANIMAL GYNAECOLOGY UNIT
This unit attends to pregnancy diagnosis and treatment
of infertility problems (Anoestrum, Repeat breeder,
Cystic ovaries, Endometritis etc.,) in both large and small
ruminants. Early pregnancy diagnosis using
ultrasonography is also being routinely done.

This unit performs artificial insemination in goat, cows
and buffaloes that are presented to the hospital.
3 LARGE ANIMAL OBSTETRICS UNIT
This unit attends to cases that are presented with Pre-
partum complications, dystocia and post-partum
complications such as total uterine prolapse, retained fetal
membranes and metritis etc., in cows, buffaloes and goats.
Cesarean operation is also being performed in both cattle
and goat.
4 SMALL ANIMAL OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY
This unit attends to cases such as pregnancy diagnosis,
Breeding advice, whelping and its complications,
abortion, pyometra, pseudopregnancy and medical
termination of pregnancy in bitches, semen evaluation
and infertility in dogs.
5 SMALL ANIMAL OPERATION THEATRE
This unit attends to regular castration and spaying in both
dog and cats. In addition, all surgeries related to
reproductive problems such as C-Section and OHE are
also being performed.
6 ASSISTED REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY

• Synchronization of estrus and ovulation is being done using the CIDR which involves
insertion of CIDR on day 0, Inj. PGF2α on day 8, removal of CIDR by day 9 and timed AI
on day 11 and 12. Pregnancy diagnosis in cattle, sheep and goats is being done using
Ultrasonography.
• Sexing of the fetus in cattle and buffaloes is done using ultrasonography
• Accurate timing of insemination in cattle is being determined based on the vaginal
electrical resistance using Heat detector. In addition, the staff of this department attend to
the AI mobile unit wherein 381 cows in and around the city have been inseminated.
• In cases of repeat breeder cows, white side test, endometrial cytology and endometrial
biopsy is being performed to detect subclinical endometritis and to ascertain the status of
endometrium. Vaginal exfoliative cytology is being done to identify estrus in goats brought
for AI
LARGE ANIMAL OBSTETRICS UNIT
During the year 2011-2012, 1301 cases were treated for pre, peri and post partum
complications in bovines and goats of which, the frequently encountered conditions are retained
fetal membranes, metritis, uterine torsion and dystocia due to fetal malpresentation and posture.

passage in a goat Dystocia due to janiceps fetal monster in a cow
SMALL ANIMAL OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY UNIT
During the year 2011-2012, 2674 cases were examined for various reproductive disorders.
The most common conditions encountered are Breeding advice, anestrus, misalliance, pregnancy
diagnosis, pseudopregnancy, pyometra, dystocia etc. Among the cases examined, bitches brought for
breeding advice, pregnancy diagnosis and for treatment of pyometra were higher in number.

SMALL AND LARGE ANIMAL REFERRAL UNIT
• In the small and large animal referral unit, vaginal exfoliative cytology, vaginoscopy,
ultrasonography, semen analysis and artificial inseminations are being carried out.
• 1663 large and small animal reproductive ultrasonography have been performed and the
total revenue generated was Rs.1,48,000/-
• Around 900 vaginal exfoliative cytology were carried out (including canine, caprine and
others) and total revenue generated was Rs. 36,700/-
• Prediction of gestational age and fetal sexing of bovine fetus is being standardized.
• Prediction of gestational age using placentome diameter in goats is being standardized
• Ultrafast Peroxidase Antiperoxidase (PAP) stain is used for staining vaginal exfoliative
cytology smears for identification of estrus in goats.
