1 A discussion meet on the technologies developed in TNFU was organised at Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi on 30.08.2013 under the Chairmanship of Dr.Baskaran Manimaran, Vice-Chancellor, TNFU. Dr.G. Sugumar, Dean in-charge of FC&RI welcomed the gathering and narrated on the technologies developed by different Departments of FC&RI for the benefit of fishing and fish farming communities. The Vice – Chancellor offered opening remarks of the programme and stressed on the need for development of viable technologies which would be beneficial for the fisherfolk. He also advised to popularise the already developed technologies through appropriate methods so that it could reach the end users without delay. The Heads of the Departments and Principal Investigators presented the details of technologies developed in their respective departments and external funded projects and the current status of such innovations. Technologies such as poly-herbal product for the production of disease resistant tiger shrimp, low cost cage farming for open waters aquaculture production, natural colour enhancer for ornamental fishes, herbal product for production of disease resistant ornamental fishes, value added fishery products, hot filled and chilled fish curry, fish gelatin, fish collagen, surimin gel gravy in retortable pouches, vacuum packed cook-chilled fish cutlet, cost effective technology for production of live fish food, chemical treatment of seafood processing plant effluents, seafood waste composting technology, FRP plywood squid jigging platform, improved Norwegian collapsible trap, production of monosex population of all female gynogentic Asian Catfish, breeding of magur, production of triploid Asian Catfish, indoor lobster fattening technology, cage culture of technology for tilapia in reservoirs and breeding of marine ornamental fishes were some of the technologies discussed for dissemination. At the end of the programme it was recommended that the technologies which are suited for immediate adoption by the fishing and fish farming communities need to be disseminated through appropriate extension methods. A discussion meet on the technologies developed in TNFU

was organised at Fisheries College and Research Institute,

Thoothukudi on 30.08.2013 under the Chairmanship of

Dr.Baskaran Manimaran, Vice-Chancellor, TNFU.

Dr.G. Sugumar, Dean in-charge of FC&RI welcomed the

gathering and narrated on the technologies developed by

different Departments of FC&RI for the benefit of fishing

and fish farming communities. The Vice – Chancellor

Catfish, breeding of magur, production of triploid Asian

Catfish, indoor lobster fattening technology, cage culture of

technology for tilapia in reservoirs and breeding of marine

ornamental fishes were some of the technologies discussed

for dissemination.

At the end of the programme it was recommended that the

technologies which are suited for immediate adoption by the

fishing and fish farming communities need to be

celebrated the 67th Independence Day in a grand manner.

Dr.Baskaran Manimaran, Vice Chancellor unfurled the

National Flag and the staff of TNFU and IFT honoured

the National flag. In his Independence Day address,

Dr. Baskaran Manimaran highlighted the Nation’s

achievements during the past years and efforts to

accomplish further development in the years to come.

Independence Day Celebrations at TNFU Centres

The Institute of Fisheries Technology (IFT), Ponneri,

a constituent Institute of TNFU celebrated the

Independence Day. Dr. D. Manikandavelu, Director in

-chage of the Centre unfurled the National Flag.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Manikandavelu stated

that the sense of freedom with responsibility is the

key for growth.

Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi

The Fisheries College and Research Institute,

Thoothukudi, a constitute college of Tamil Nadu

Fisheries University, Nagapattinam celebrated the 67th

Independence Day in a grand manner. The students and

staff of Fisheries College and Research Institute

participated in this programme. A guard of honour was

performed by the Security staff. Dr.G.Sugumar, Dean

in-charge unfurled the National Flag and addressed the

gathering.

As part of the Independent day celebrations, Sports events

viz. obstacle race, fast walk, sideward run & return,

cricket ball throw, running, balloon bursting for children,

volley ball match and lucky circle were conducted for

students, teaching and non-teaching staff of the College

and prizes distributed to the winners.

I.Sivaraman, an alumnus of the Fisheries College and

Research Institute has won the Fulbright-Nehru

fellowship sponsored by the United States – India

Education Foundation (USIEF).

The Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship, the flagship

international educational exchange programme of the

United States is designed to increase mutual

understanding between the people of the U.S. and India.

This fellowship enables the outstanding students in

India to study, research and engage in work experiences

in the United States.

Fisheries College Alumnus wins Fulbright Fellowship

In the National level selection process,

Mr. I.Sivaraman made it to the final list of 25

candidates who were selected for the Fulbright-Nehru

Doctoral and Professional Research fellowships for

this year. He is currently a doctoral research scholar at

the Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai.

The fellowship is worth ten lakh rupees. It will help

him carryout a part of his doctoral research in

University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida for Nine

months starting from August 2013.

Through his study he aims to model the sustainability

of Indian Shrimp Farming Systems. Shrimp farming is

a money spinner segment of our Indian seafood trade,

but its growth is characterised with many ups and

downs. His research would throw light on the

sustainability aspects of the industry and might aid the

policy makers. The Dean-in-charge of Fisheries

College and Research Institute, Dr.G.Sugumar

congratulated him on the achievement as he is the first

student from this institute to win this coveted

fellowship.

The NFDB sponsored 10 days training programme for

Master Trainers on improved harvest and post harvest

practices for sustainable fisheries and enhancing the

income of fisherfolk was organised from 30.07.2013 to

08.08.2013 by the Department of Fisheries Extension,

Fisheries College and Research Institute.

A total of 20 master trainers from the State Fisheries

Department, SCAD, KVK, Institute of Fisheries

Technology, Ponneri participated in the programme.

The valedictory function of the training programme

was conducted on 08.08.2013 in the AV Hall.

Dr. R. Santhakumar, Professor and Head in-charge

welcomed the gathering. Dr. G. Sugumar, Dean

in-charge presided over the function and issued

certificates to the trainees.

A manual on Improved harvest and post harvest

practices for sustainable fisheries and enhancing the

income of fisherfolk was released on this occasion.

Extension proposed vote of thanks. Dr. N.V.Sujath

kumar, Professor had made arrangements for the

valedictory function.

An exclusive training programme on Utilisation of Tuna

Processing wastes was conducted for 15 women of

Thoothur village, Kanyakumari district for two days by

the Department of Fish Quality Assurance and

Management, Fisheries College and Research Institute on

13.08.2013 and 14.08.2013. This programme was

arranged by the Association of Deep Sea Going Artisanal

Fishermen (ADSGAF), Thoothur through the National

Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad for the

benefit of fisherwomen.

Dr. Ansar Ali, Deputy Director, MPEDA, Thoothukudi

inaugurated the programme as the Chief guest and

Dr. G. Sugumar, the Dean in-charge, Fisheries College

and Research Institute presided over the function. During

the programme, trainees were explained about the

potential nutrients available in different tuna wastes like

skin, scales, bones and fins; and their possible use as

fertilizers, bio-fuel, nutraceuticals and other health foods.

The trainees were given practical demonstration on the

preparation of fish meal, liquid fish fertilizer, fish

biodiesel, fish gelatin, fish calcium supplements and fish

protein hydrolysates and sold at the rate of Rs. 75/L. To

provide confidence to the trainees, few case studies were

explained to them.

Training on utilisation of Tuna processing waste

Trainees informed that the first batch of trainees,

who had undergone this training at FC&RI, had

already started preparing liquid fish fertilizer.

Dr. R. Jeya Shakila, Associate Professor and

Mrs. R. Shalini, Assistant Professor served as the

training co-ordinators for this programme.

Training on engine maintenance , sea safety and responsible fishing

The Inaugural function of two weeks training programme

on Engine maintenance, Sea Safety and Responsible

fishing was held at Shore Laboratory of Fisheries College

and Research Institute, Thoothukudi on 19.08.2013.

The Principal Investigator of the NADP scheme and

Professor and Head, Department of Fishing Technology

and Fisheries Engineering of Fisheries College and

Research Institute, Thoothukudi Dr.N.Neethiselvan,

welcomed the gathering.

In his welcome address, he highlighted the facilities being

created under the NADP scheme on “Establishment of

Marine Engine and Sea Safety Training centre for the

fisher folk of Tamilnadu”.

The function was inaugurated by Mr.P.Prdeepkumar,

Assistant Director of Fisheries (Marine), Thoothukudi and

delivered the Chief Guest Address.

Dr.B. Sundaramoorthy, Co-Investigator of the

scheme proposed the vote of thanks.

Training on ornamental fish culture

A training programme on ornamental fish culture was

conducted at Therekalpudur village, Kanyakumari

district under the DBT Sponsored Scheme on

Empowerment of SC & ST population of Kanyakumari

District through adoption of ornamental fish culture

practices for 5 days from 19.8.2013 to 23.8.2013.

Twenty participants (SC/ST) from Therekalpudur

village participated in the programme.

The trainees were given special lectures on live bearers

and egg laying ornamental fishes of Kanyakumari

district, their culture and breeding practices.

Dr.S. Athithan, Professor, Maritech Research and

Extension Centre, Tharuvaikulam, offered a special

lecture on preparation of floating feeds for ornamental

fishes.

Demonstration classes on fabrication of glass tanks, use

of accessories in ornamental fish culture and feed

preparation were conducted. The Valedictory function

was held on 23.8.2013. Mr.P. Isaac Jeyakumar,

Assistant Director, Department of Fisheries, Nagercoil

offered felicitations and distributed certificates for the

participants.

Glass tanks along with ornamental fishes were

distributed for all participants by the Assistant

Director to enable them initiate culture of ornamental

fishes after the programme.

Dr.S.David Kingston, Professor and Head, Fisheries

Training and Research Centre, Parakkai organized the

programme.

Training on Tilapia culture

The NADP sponsored training programme on Tilapia

culture was conducted by the Department of Fisheries

Biotechnology, Fisheries College and Research Institute,

Thoothukudi from 20.08.2013 to 22.08.2013 in the

Farmers Training Centre, TANUVAS, Theni.

A total of 25 farmers from the District of Theni

participated in the three days training programme. The

training programme was inaugurated by Dr. K. Karal

Marx, Professor & Head and Principle Investigator of the

scheme, Department of Fisheries Biotechnology, Fisher-

ies College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi.

Dr.Peer Mohammed, Associate Professor & Head,

Farmers Training Centre, Theni presided over the

function and Mrs. Umarani, Associate Professor

organized this training programme for the benefit of

farmers of Theni district.

As a field visit, farmers were taken to Vaigai

reservoir and Nile tilapia landings were observed.

Training on Lobster fattening

One day on-campus training programme on Lobster

Fattening was conducted at this Centre on 27.08.2013.

A total of 10 trainees including 2 women from

Thoothukudi district participated. This training

programme mainly aims to impart knowledge and

create awareness on lobster fattening techniques

among trainees.

Video show on Lobster fattening techniques and

Packing of lobsters were shown to the trainees.

Trainees were exposed practically by taking to

Tharuvaikulam shore area and explained about the

different activities of fattening of lobsters including

the construction of cages.

Further, Mr.M.Francis, a progressive farmer from

Tharuvaikulam coastal village shared his experiences

in lobster fattening techniques among trainees during

field visit.

This training programme will pave the way for self

employment by starting their farming practices in the

coastal areas for the trainees. Dr. S.Athithan, Professor

and Head of this Centre coordinated the entire training

programme.

Training on preparation of value added fishery products

A training programme on Preparation of value added

fishery products was conducted at Fisheries Training

and Research Centre, Parakkai for 2 days from

26.8.2013 to 27.8.2013. Thirty five students from the

Department of Zoology, Women’s Christian College,

Nagercoil attended the programme. Dr.S. David

Kingston, Professor and Head, Fisheries Training and

Research Centre, Parakkai welcomed the gathering.

The Executive Engineer of Public Works Department

(Water Resources Organisation, Kodayar River Basin,

Nagercoil) Mr.S.K. Subramaniam inaugurated the

programme and addressed the gathering.

He insisted the need for aquaculture in perennial lakes

and ponds for increasing protein rich food.
