VI –Reading Comprehension(٤٠M )

Read the following text, and then answer the questions below :

“The Slow Food movement is committed to the preservation and restoration of the

traditional joy of the table,” says Jonathan White, a member of the Slow Food

organization.” And that’s not about food only; it’s also about strengthening the ties of

kinship and companionship through enjoying meals together, which you can’t just get by

driving through and eating in the traffic.”

Slow Food may use a snail as its logo, but it’s not anti-fast food. ”We’re not

against anything,’ White says.” Our agenda is to educate people about the pleasures of

the table, in order to help traditional food artists-bakers, cheese makers and farmers to

survive by sustaining demand for their products. Members of the slow food organization

meet on a regular basis for long, leisurely meals to talk about food, culture and

philosophy. They even organize food tastings and cooking classes. But most of all, they

the “Heat and eat it” American eating habits and style. For them, fooderadicatework to

is not only about literally eating slowly. It is a way of life. They also discuss how to

make eating healthy food a way of life not only in America but all over the world .

The movement dates back to the 1980’s.That was when a young Italian

organization protested against a fast-food restaurant which was about to open in Rome.

It was aiming to advocate authentic Italian food traditions. It was just a game at first, a

way as a sculpture byitschance to remind people that food is an art, as pleasurable in

Michelangelo.

Today, Slow Food is strong in Italy, where the joy of the table has become a

matter of national pride .There are slow Food organizations in more than 15 countries

from Switzerland to Singapore. Although the movement is new to some shores, it is

believed that it can reach America, which has become ripe for Slow Food. Ten years

ago, there were hardly any farmers’ markets, Americans were fast –food driven, and

there was less interest in food. It has dramatically changed. ”Americans are asking and

learning more about healthy food and how to make eating something enjoyable,” says

Paul Bartolotta, slow Foodist and the owner of a Chicago restaurant.
