Laser is a tool renowned for its speed and precision. Laser

manufacturing processes enable the joining of lightweight

structural components in the automotive industry and open

new vistas in the production of innovative energy storage

devices. They improve the efficiency of solar cells and increase

throughput in the production environment – and laser pro-

cesses also lead the way when it comes to innovative repair

and maintenance methods in the engine and turbine industry.

While encouraging this shift towards sustainability, laser sys-

tems at the same time make highly efficient use of energy.

Laser radiation is applied precisely where it is needed – with-

out unintended side-effects: Just one reason why our work in

R&D places major emphasis on green photonics.

Seven Fraunhofer Institutes will be showcasing an impressive

range of tailored light applications at LASER World of PHO-

TONICS 2011. Our primary focus is on contract research and

development work across the full spectrum of optical technolo-

gies, including optical design, laser source development, opti-

cal test and measuring systems, precision optomechanical sys-

tems, and laser micro and macro machining of a wide variety

of materials. We also offer tailor-made process and system

solutions, feasibility studies and expert consulting services.

Whatever your needs, we are very much looking forward to

having an opportunity to discuss them with you in person!

MICRO-OPTICS ANDNANO-OPTICS

Micro- and nanostructured optics are key components of

modern optical systems. Electron beam lithography technolo-

gies specially enhanced for optics have made it possible to

manufacture micro-optical components at the highest resolu-

tion on substrates measuring up to 12 inches in diameter. Laser

lithography processes can be used to structure curved surfaces.

By combining both methods, microstructures with different

levels of feature size can be implemented on an optical ele-

ment. Fraunhofer researchers develop processes for the

replication and manufacture of molding tools that can be used

to produce low-cost precision optics for the consumer market.

OPTICS MANUFACTURING

The development of manufacturing processes for tailor-made

optical components and systems is one of the Fraunhofer

Institutes’ major areas of expertise. We design and develop

pursued by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Founded in 1949, the

research organization undertakes applied research that drives

economic development and serves the wider benefit of society.

Its services are solicited by customers and contractual partners

in industry, the service sector and public administration. At

present, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft maintains more than 80

research units in Germany, including 60 Fraunhofer Institutes.

The majority of the more than 18,000 staff are qualified

scientists and engineers, who work with an annual research

budget of 1.66 billion euros. Of this sum, 1.40 billion euros is

generated through contract research. Affiliated international

research centers and representative offices provide contact

with the regions of greatest importance to present and future

scientific progress and economic development.
