ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS

If you didn’t finish Year 12 or get the prerequisites you need for entry into that dream university course don’t worry, you’re not alone. TAFE Queensland can help you on your journey through to university studies with a variety of alternative programs.

ADULT TERTIARY PREPARATION

Our Adult Tertiary Preparation (ATP) course is specifically designed for people who want to study at university, but do not have the entrance rank they need to gain entry.

ATP is fully accredited and widely accepted by universities, training providers and employers as an alternative to Year 12. Upon successful completion you will gain a tertiary rank and fulfil select subject prerequisites for university entry like Year 12 maths and English.

UNILEARN

Unilearn offers a range of online bridging courses to help you get the subject pre-requisites you need to meet university entrance requirements.

These courses are accredited by a range of universities across Australia. We offer subjects in academic literacy skills, biology, chemistry, introduction to economics, introductory mathematics, senior mathematics, senior English, physics, and study preparation.

CERTIFICATE AND DIPLOMA COURSES

TAFE Queensland offers more than 500 nationally-recognised qualifications from entry-level certificates through to bachelor degrees. We also offer comprehensive trade training from beginner to advanced levels.

Certificate courses are generally designed to give you hands-on skills and introductory theory that will equip you to confidently seek employment in your chosen industry. Diploma level courses are more in depth and are perfect if you want to advance your career, build on your existing skills, and/or prepare for university study.

SENIOR COLLEGE

Available only in Brisbane at our Alexandra Hills campus, if you’re aged 15 – 17 you can complete Year 11 and 12 in an adult-learning environment with our Senior College program. This school alternative option is perfect if you’re looking for a practical and independent alternative to the traditional high school system.

You can earn a QCE or ATAR outcome by studying QCAA registered subjects. Depending on your goals these qualifications can help you transition to tertiary study or secure a job.

ABOUT OPS

An OP is a number between 1 and 25 calculated by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) on completion of Year 12 for eligible students. The highest possible score is an OP 1. If you’re a Year 12 student in 2019, you will still receive an OP. You will also be the last group to complete the Queensland Core Skill (QCS) test. The final year for tertiary study entry with OPs will be 2020.

QTAC SELECTION RANKS

A selection rank is calculated by QTAC based on qualifications you already hold. It is a number from 1 to 99 (99 being the highest) which demonstrates your level of current knowledge and ability like an OP or ATAR score. This selection rank is then used by education providers to determine if you are suitable for entry into a course.

Not getting the right Overall Position (OP) or Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) isn’t the end of future university study. Completing any TAFE Queensland certificate III, certificate IV, diploma, advanced diploma, or associate degree may improve your OP, ATAR or Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) selection rank and allow you to get into your dream university degree. Another added benefit of studying this way is that you can start working in your industry straight away, using your certificate or diploma skills while you finish off your degree.

TRANSITION TO ATAR

From 2020 the ATAR will replace the OP system in Queensland. The ATAR is the national standard for tertiary admissions. It indicates your position relative to other students. Entry to tertiary study will use ATARs from 2021. As a result of the transition, university admission policies in relation to vocational education and training (VET) qualifications will change. You will need to contact individual providers to confirm how your qualification will be assessed for rank improvement.

DIPLOMA-TO-DEGREE PATHWAYS

Through our partnerships with some of the country’s top universities and higher education providers, you can enter into a university degree course after completing one of our diploma or associate degree courses without reapplying through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC).

Our diploma-to-degree pathways, also known as either dual awards or credit transfers, mean that you can complete a diploma and bachelor degree in the time it usually takes to complete a degree alone. You'll graduate ahead of the pack with academic knowledge backed up by real-world skills. Studying this way may save you time and money, and will give you a head start in the job market allowing you to put your diploma skills into practice in the industry while you complete your degree qualification.

DUAL AWARDS

You can choose from more than 140 combined courses (dual awards), which you apply for through a single QTAC application.

You complete the diploma at TAFE Queensland then go directly to university to take up a place that has already been reserved and guaranteed for you. You don’t have to reapply through QTAC. In most cases you will get up to a year’s academic credit towards your degree.

CREDIT TRANSFER

You can choose to just study a single qualification at TAFE Queensland. If you decide to go to university later you can apply for academic credit towards a degree in a similar field. (e.g. complete a Diploma of Information Technology and go on to a Bachelor of Information Technology).

In some cases once you have completed your diploma universities will accept your application directly. However, in some cases you may need to apply for university entry through QTAC.

Once enrolled, you will be given your credit which has already been pre-negotiated by TAFE Queensland. Often this credit is as much as one year of the degree. Specific entry requirements may apply in some circumstances. Please contact the relevant university for more information.

PERFORMANCE LEVEL ASSESSMENT

Many of our diplomas and advanced diplomas have units (also called competencies) that have Performance Level Assessment (PLA) as a supplementary reporting system.

PLA is a form of graded assessment and an additional way of rating certain aspects of student achievement. If you demonstrate an advanced level of performance, you will be awarded a Credit, and a Distinction is awarded for exceptional level of performance. PLA has a number of advantages:

• QTAC converts PLA results into a Grade Point Average (GPA), which can then improve your Selection Rank (OP or ATAR equivalent).

• You have an opportunity to enhance your OP/ATAR equivalent rank to an even higher level through PLA when studying a PLA graded diploma or advanced diploma. This can open up a wider range of university courses.

• Evidence of additional effort and performance can enhance your employment prospects.

HOW TO APPLY

When you have made a decision about the course you want to study, it’s time to apply. TAFE Queensland offers two primary application processes – direct entry or an application through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC).

DIRECT ENTRY

Direct entry simply means applying to TAFE Queensland directly. Direct entry is available for all TAFE Queensland certificate and diploma courses.

To apply first visit tafeqld.edu.au and search for the course you want to study. Click the Apply Now button on the course page, and complete the Ready to Apply form. Alternatively you can visit a customer service centre at one of our 50+ locations or call 1300 308 233.

We will need to check you meet the entry requirements and selection criteria for your chosen course, as well as see if you're eligible to access any relevant funding. Check out the details under the important information section on the course page for a list of requirements. Gathering all your supporting eligibility documents together ready to supply to us when requested will help speed up this process.

Once your application has been accepted and you have accepted an offer for a place in your course you will receive an enrolment email that includes all the practical information you need to know including timetables and orientation information.

Direct entry is a good option if you want to apply for a course outside of QTAC timeframes and get started on your new study adventure sooner.

APPLYING THROUGH QTAC

You can also apply for our diploma to degree pathways and degree programs, as well as a range of our diploma courses, via the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) at qtac.edu.au/applying.

This process allows you to choose a range of courses and rank them as preferences.

Your application will be assessed, and if you are successful you will receive your offer directly from QTAC. You will need to contact QTAC to accept your offer before enrolling.

After you have accepted your offer, you will need to complete TAFE Queensland’s enrolment process. Once this has been processed and paid you will receive a confirmation of enrolment, receipt, and further instructions.
