In this Hands-on Labs Interactive Simulation, you will learn what desktop as a service(DaaS) means, contrast it with typical virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), and explainwhy VMware Horizon Cloud is the market-leading offering. The attendee will then havethe opportunity to walk through a simulation of setting up an Horizon Cloudenvironment.

Location of the Main Console

1. The area in the RED box contains the Main Console. The Lab Manual is on the tabto the Right of the Main Console.

2. Your lab starts with 90 minutes on the timer. The lab can not be saved. All yourwork must be done during the lab session. But you can click the EXTEND toincrease your time. If you are at a VMware event, you can extend your lab timetwice, for up to 30 minutes. Each click gives you an additional 15 minutes.Outside of VMware events, you can extend your lab time up to 9 hours and 30

minutes. Each click gives you an additional hour.3. All work in this HOL Interactive Simulation will take place in the manual.

This chapter will provide a brief introduction to Horizon Cloud, which is a new cloud-scale, feature-rich service for managing and delivering desktops and apps. This servicedelivers virtual desktops and applications while allowing you to decide whether to bringyour own capacity or buy capacity from VMware. The Horizon Cloud Service is designedto enable organizations to start small and then scale up on demand.

Modernized Delivery of traditional Desktops andApplications

The need to re-evaluate desktop strategies is driving many companies to considervirtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). VDI has promised to solve many of the traditionalchallenges of physical desktops. With VDI, desktops are centralized onto virtualmachines that run in corporate data centers. Cloud hosted Virtual Desktops make day-to-day tasks, such as deploying new desktops and applications, and supportingdistributed workers, much easier and less labor-intensive. Users access their virtualdesktops via remoting technology, making it possible for IT to finely control themovement of data into and out of the data center. Because data is not stored on thelocal device, companies are at much less risk if PCs or mobile devices are stolen or lost.

Horizon Cloud delivers desktops and applications using a purpose-built cloud platformthat is scalable across multiple deployment options, including on-premises infrastructureor fully managed infrastructure from VMware. It supports a cloud scale architecture thatmakes it easy deliver virtualized, Windows desktops and applications to any device,anytime. A flexible subscription model that enable organizations to easily get up andrunning and scale quickly.

Financial Reasons for Leveraging Horizon Cloud

Traditional desktop and application virtualization is costly and time-consuming toimplement. It generally requires specialized IT expertise to set up. With traditional

desktop and application virtualization, organizations need to purchase infrastructure forboth hosting desktops and apps, as well as management infrastructure.

Moving to Horizon Cloud gives organizations the opportunity to move from a CapExmodel to an OpEx model with predictable economics. The Horizon Cloud solution is asimple, yet flexible and scalable solution that enables organizations to choose wherevirtual desktops and apps reside, on-premises or in the cloud, or both, all while beingmanaged by a centralized cloud control plane.

Horizon Cloud Concept & Capabilities

With Horizon Cloud, management is in the cloud, but organizations can choose wheredesktops and apps reside either hosted in the cloud or sitting on-premises. HorizonCloud requires less IT expertise and takes less time to set up than traditional desktopand application solutions. Horizon Cloud is available using an OPEX model withsubscription based pricing for more predictable economics. The Horizon Cloud servicemakes it easy for organizations to move between deployment models using a singleuser license.

For organizations leveraging Horizon Cloud with hosted infrastructure, workspaces arehosted by VMware in the public cloud. This model simplifies the delivery of desktops andapps as a service. This option is great for organizations who might not have desktop andapplication virtualization expertise. It is ideal for organizations that have cloud firstinitiatives and who want subscription pricing.

For organizations using Horizon Cloud with on-premises infrastructure, IT can choosefrom a growing ecosystem of partners including Dell, EMC, QCT, and HDS. In thisscenario, management is in the cloud, and desktops/apps are on-premises.Organizations often choose this deployment model when they want to move to thecloud but need desktops and apps close to end-users to improve performance or tocomply with regulatory or security mandates. This deployment option is useful fororganizations that have branch offices and need infrastructure closer to end-users. It isuseful for organizations that want to deploy desktop and application virtualization butwho do not want to invest in the expertise or infrastructure required for traditionaldesktop and application virtualization deployments.

You will do a simulated setup of a Horizon Cloud tenant. While this lab focuses onconfiguring a Horizon Cloud Hosted Infrastructure environment, the configuration stepsfor an on-premises infrastructure deployment are very similar.

IntroductionOnce your Horizon Cloud Service Provider has provisioned your Horizon Cloudenvironment, also known as a tenant, you will need to configure some initial settingsthat are in the Horizon Cloud Administration Console, which is is where all your tenantadministration will take place. In this module, you join your tenant to the domain,configure administrative access, set the agent file installation location, as well as reviewgeneral system settings.
