Welcome
Welcome to Ames and Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine! We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to host the 2014 APVMA Symposium and hope you enjoy your experience. Our planning committee has worked very hard to bring you the best symposium, and we are very proud to have worked with so many great people to make this possible. We encourage you to take advantage of the resources offered throughout the symposium, including talking with the different representatives in the Sponsor Hallway and with the veterinarians you meet in your labs and lectures. The annual Pre-Vet Olympics will be held Friday night, and we promise it will be a LOT of fun! This is a great way to get to know students from other schools and to develop closer relationships with your fellow students. On Saturday, you will hear speakers and demonstrators that excel in their fields of study. We are fortunate to have a wide array of topics that will be presented. The unique offering of two labs for each student attendee is something we strived for, and hope this extra hands-on experience is something all attendees will find memorable. Saturday evening there will be a dance, which will be a great way to network one more time before you head home. We are happy you decided to come visit Ames, Iowa! A variety of exciting and interesting laboratories and lectures have been prepared for your enjoyment and learning. We have a lot of fun things planned, and hope you enjoy all we have in store for you! Thank you all for this wonderful opportunity. Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine
The Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine is a great place to be whether you are a student, a client looking for outstanding veterinary diagnostic and medical services, or a faculty or staff member, clinician, or industry representative looking for a partnering opportunity. We take pride in our heritage and in the advances we are making today that will guarantee an even more exciting future as we continue to be a dynamic contributor to our profession and society.
Our college was founded in 1879 as the first public veterinary school in the United States. Since then, our graduates, faculty and staff have established a strong tradition of leadership in teaching, learning, research, and service in veterinary medicine. Our graduates continue to excel as leaders in all facets of the profession in all parts of the world.
Here are just a few of the things that make the college an exciting place:
• The State of Iowa and Iowa State University value veterinary medicine highly and since 2006 they have invested more than $105 million in expanding and renovating the Dr. W. Eugene and Linda Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center and renovating classrooms and laboratories, making the college an outstanding environment in which to teach, learn, practice veterinary medicine, and perform cutting-edge research.
• An aggressive assessment program allows us to continuously improve the quality of our education and service, and ensure that we exceed your expectations.
• We are fully accredited by the AVMA Council On Education.
• Our veterinary diagnostic services and laboratory protect animal and human health by providing effective diagnostic testing to tens of thousands of clients each year.
• From circovirus in hogs to HIV, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, E. coli, HIV and prion diseases in people, our researchers are having a global impact as they contribute to animal and human health, food safety; and discovery, prevention and treatment of emerging and re-emerging diseases.
• We are growing our clinical expertise and resources in key areas, including neurology, surgery and ophthalmology.
• Research expenditures have grown 38 percent in the last four years and the college was cited as being the number one “high-impact institution” for research citations in veterinary medicine.
• Comprehensive programs are helping to answer the national need for veterinarians, particularly in food animal medicine, with unique, hands-on student experiences such as immersive summer programs in swine, dairy, beef cattle, and research, and small animal medicine.

Lecture Descriptions
Animal Care and Well-Being: What’s Best for the Animal?Aumni Room 2010This presentation focuses on the confusion concerning the role and function of animals in our society affecting the debate about farm animal care. We will take a closer look at swine production and provide a solid case study of how science-based practices have driven the evolution of modern farm animal care.
Animal Welfare, Disconnect between Societal Values and High Tech AgricultureRoom 2532Animal welfare is a complicated issue whereby misunderstanding, differing values and the unwillingness of people to change have led to a polarization similar to that we are currently experiencing in American politics. The secret to finding common ground in the animal welfare issue is acknowledgement that the use of animals for food and fiber is appropriate; but only when we accept that all life is sacred.
Bats to Cats: Bridging the Gaps of Comparative NutritionRoom 2532The objectives of this lecture will be to understand the process of diet formulation for managed exotic species in zoological institutions, and how model species are selected for nutrient requirement comparisons.
Behavior Modification and Addressing Unwanted Behaviors in Domestic AnimalsRoom 2532Veterinarians are often asked to respond to clients with concerns about an animal’s behavior, which may be addressed directly in the veterinary clinic or may be referred to animal behavior professionals. In this presentation we will explore the underpinnings of unwanted behaviors, and techniques for behavior modification.
Behavior Training for Veterinary Procedures in ZoosRoom 1226This presentation will focus on the benefits and techniques used to train zoo animals to participate in their health-care in a zoological setting.
Challenges in Zoological Medicine (Case Studies)Room 1226This presentation will discuss several case studies on captive wild animals, which will highlight the challenges in dealing with medical problems in non-domestic species.
Equine HoofRoom 2226This talk will provide a basic introduction to the equine hoof capsule with a more in-depth discussion of the hoof wall.
Equine Dental AnatomyRoom 2226Knowing the anatomy of equine teeth is important in understanding and managing dental problems and age estimation, which this lecture will provide a basic introduction on. This lecture is recommended to be taken in correspondence with the equine dentistry lab.

Lecture Descriptions
Ethical Issues in the Study of Wild ChimpanzeesAlumni Room 2010This lecture will discuss the changes primatologists studying great apes have experienced recently, Which includes more intervention in cases of medical emergencies. Also being disucssed is the criteria we use to determine whether to intervene in the lives of wild apes and the costs and benefits of doing so, including a discussion on scientific and general ethical concerns.
Evaluation of Voluntary Movement Abnormalities of Dogs and CatsRoom 1226Clinical evaluation of the animal with gait disorders and movement abnormalities will be discussed in a case-based format. Discussion will include abnormalities such as lameness, ataxia, hypermetria, and paresis.
From Snakes to Swans: A Day in the Life of a Wildlife VeterinarianRoom 1226Lecture about wildlife medicine in general: an intro to the profession, how she got involved, what a typical day at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota looks like, and review some case studies.
GI Endoscopy in University PracticeAlumni Room 2010Value/utility of gastrointestinal endoscopy in the diagnosis of GI disease in dogs and cats.
Genomics and Clinical DiseaseAlumni Room 2010After a shaky start, the revolution has begun. “With the advances in genomics and genetics, everyone thought this “new medicine” would solve all our problems; that genes alone could explain everything. In fact, that did not turn out to be the case, but it is the next generation of genomics technologies that are now beginning to show what might be possible.
Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship: The Role of the State VeterinarianAlumni Room 2010It is important for pre-veterinary students to understand the roles they can be involved within protecting our food supply. Thus, this lecture will cover Iowa agriculture, production systems, the importance of agriculture in the state of Iowa, and an overview of foreign animal disease and emergency preparedness.
Lameness in CattleRoom 2226Lameness is one of the most important health problems in cattle. Our objectives for this session will be to discuss the general concepts of weight bearing in cattle and how those become important in the context of housing, environment, feeding and management conditions in cattle.
Measuring Animal Welfare: Research Tools and Application to Farm Animal Care ProgramsRoom 2532Multi-disciplinary techniques used in the laboratory are helpful to understand an animal response to particular situations, and are especially important in interpretation of data about affective states, such as pain, fear, and contentment.
