Ben Popoola is entering his 11th season as head coach of the Mountaineers with a record of 85-91-15 at Appalachian. One of the most successful women’s soccer coaches in the nation, Popoola’s 270 career wins on the women’s sideline ranks 11th among active Division I coaches. In addition, he also has a 201-63-5 record as a men’s soccer coach. As a testament to the solid program Popoola has built at Appalachian, the Mountaineers have posted records at .500 or better in each of the last four seasons after going 9-9-1 in 2006. In 2004, the Apps had their second-consecutive double-digit win season with a 10-9-1 mark. Popoola's 2003 squad was by far the best in school history, compiling a 12-5-3 mark for a winning percentage of .675. That tally was a six-game improvement over the previous year’s win total. In addition, Popoola guided the 2003 Mountaineers to a 3-1

victory over the College of Charleston in the opening round of the SoCon Tournament, marking just the second win ever and first under the eight-team format, for ASU in SoCon Tournament play. Popoola’s efforts on the recruiting trail and the field paid off in 2001, as Appalachian was able to build the first winning record in the program’s history, going 9-8-3. ASU was undefeated at home that year — in fact, only one goal was scored by an opponent at Kidd Brewer Stadium during the entire campaign. Under the tutelage of Coach Popoola, a young Mountaineer squad battled to six overtime games and managed to knock off traditional SoCon power Furman on Oct. 12 of that year. Popoola came to Appalachian from Lambuth University, where his 1996 squad compiled a 12-4-1 record. Prior to his one-year stint at Lambuth, Popoola was both head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Park College in Missouri. His men’s squad tallied a 201-63-5 record in 13 years, while his women’s team went 173-30-4 in seven years. Popoola owns an all-time women’s head coaching record of 270-127-20. A 1979 graduate of Clemson, Popoola played on the Nigerian national team from 1971-75 before joining Clemson in the fall of 1975. A former member of the Kansas City Comets, Popoola also has MISL experience playing in Chicago and Cleveland. He was a NASL starter for the Memphis Rogues and has also competed for his native Nigeria in the World Cup. He and his wife, Christine, have two children.

Hallie Briggs enters her second season on the Mountaineer coaching staff after a four-year playing career at Appalachian from 2002-05. Briggs played in 43 matches at midfield for the Apps before having her senior season cut short by a knee injury. A native of Boca Raton, Fla., Briggs graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Ft. Lauderdale where she was a member of the 1999 state champion, 2001 state finalist and 2002 state runner-up teams. She was also a 2002 Miami Herald all-county team selection and played for Broward County Hall of Fame coach Carlos Giron. Briggs has also played internationally with St. Thomas Aquinas, taking second place in the Dana Cup in Denmark, second in Italy’s Renaissance Cup and first in Ireland’s Emerald Cup.

Lindsay Cobb begins her third season assisting with the Appalachian women’s soccer program and will continue to train the team’s goalkeepers. Cobb was a three-time first-team All-ACC goalkeeper for NC State from 1988-90. During her four-year career with the Wolfpack, Cobb was in goal for the ACC championship team and helped lead the Wolfpack to a 65-21-7 record (.737) and a pair of NCAA Final Fours. Cobb was named Tournament MVP when NC State won the 1988 ACC championship after allowing one goal and recording 14 saves in 270 minutes. A year later, she was named to the NCAA Final Four’s All-Tournament team after recording 15 saves in the semifinals against North Carolina. Currently, Cobb is ranked second all-time in ACC history with 396 career saves.

2007 OUtLOOK Appalachian State University women’s soccer enters the 2007 season with one huge advantage over previous squads; experience. In the program’s brief 14-year history, few squads can equal the match-forged experience that this team possesses. Eleventh-year head coach Ben popoola believes that this year’s squad has all the tools to build upon the suc-ceses of previous seasons. “With the experience that we have this season, along with the quickness and physicality, we have an opportunity to do things that no other previous ASU team has done,” said Popoola. The Mountaineers return10 starters and 14 players overall from a squad that finished with a record of 9-9-1 in 2006, the fourth consecutive season with a record of .500 or better. In the SoCon, the Mountaineers finished at 5-4-1 to se-cure sixth place and a spot in the SoCon Tournament for the first time since 2004. At forward, all-conference candidate casey cleary returns as part of the trio of top goal scorers. With five goals to her credit in 2006 and 11 in 2005; Clearly is in sixth place on ASU’s goals chart with 16. She is only nine goals shy of moving into first place as the Mountaineers’ all-time leading goal scorer.

“Casey has been an impact player for us from day one,” said coach Popoola. “We expect for her to come in and con-tribute as much as possible again this year.” Also fighting for time at forward will be the other two top goalscorers from 2006. paige morrow and Jenni-fer macneill both netted five goals in the 2006 cam-paign and look to improve on those numbers. Join-ing them on the front line is caro-line Lowe, who posted four goals and three assists last season and led the team in shots with 61 attempts, and senior captain Lindsay moore who has nine career goals. Numerous newcomers including freshman carella dimaggio, Australian Amy Zahirski, Charlotte transfer and

Boone native Jen callahan, as well as michelle Lavine, a junior transfer from Jacksonville Uni-versity, look to make the team up front and fight for playing time. Lavine was named All-Atlantic Sun in 2005 and joins the Mountain-eers with five career goals and 18 career assists. The midfield is home to Ap-palachain’s only 2007 conference honoree. Jaclyn hoffman returns after receiving second-team all-SoCon recognition in 2006. The senior uses her distribution skills and physical presence to set up teammates in forward positions. “When you look at Jackie, she is the heart of the team,” said Popoola. “She’s just like a quarter-back setting up all her teammates.” Helping Hoffman in the cen-ter of the midfield is stephanie Balzano who transferred into Ap-palachian State from Duquesnse University, where she saw action in six matches as a defensive mid-fielder.

Jaclyn Hoffman

Balzano will also battle with shania gold, a transfer from Char-lotte, freshmen rachel handy, Kelsey ohlger and Bennett suber for the vacant mid-field position left by graduating se-nior Dana Murphy. The Moun-taineers return a defensive corps that is fully intact from last season. Senior captain courtney o’Brien anchors the de-fense with junior Brooke humphrey and sophomores Leigh morrow and Lauren Bouffard.

“We’re going to rely on them being solid this year,” said Popoola. “You’re looking at a group that has played to-gether for two years now, so they should keep the defense solid.” The miserly defense only allowed 23 goals on the season, placing it in the top half of the conference chart. In confer-ence matches, the defense only allowed 10 goals, placing it third on the list for conference games only. The heart and soul of any defensive unit is the goalkeeper. Appalachian returns emma white who played almost every minute of the 2006 season in goal. However, she will get pressure from freshman caroline clarke and sopho-more transfer Leslie widener, who joins the Mountaineers from Radford. As is his trademark, Popoola will experiment with many different styles of play to find the one that best suits his players on the pitch. “Any of the 11 teams can win this conference,” said Popoola. “They’re all very good, but we have to take care of our team first , and if we do that, we’ll win our share of matches.” Appalachian will open up the 2007 season under the lights at Kidd Brewer Stadium on August 31 against Tennessee Tech at 7:30 p.m. The conference sched-ule opens on September 27 with a road match at Davidson.

ASU SOCCEr STADIUM

Appalachian soccer begins its third season at the ASU Soccer Stadium in 2007. The facility features a full-size natural-grass pitch and bleacher seating for 360 fans on an elevated bluff that offers impeccable sight lines of the action on the field as well as a picturesque panoramic view of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains The facility is located at the university’s State Farm complex and saw its first regular-season action on Thursday, Sept. 1 when Mountaineers’ women’s team defeated Gardner-Webb 2-0 with Whitney Southard scoring the first regular-season goal at the ASU Soccer Stadium. The men opened up their home schedule on Sept. 12 with a 2-0 win over Liberty. Paul Pessina scored the men’s first tally on the new field. Plans are already underway to improve the home of the Mountaineers in the near future. As part of a $32 million athletics facilities enchancement plan, the Mountaineer soccer program will have a new, on-campus facility located adjacent to the new baseball stadium near the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center in the coming years.

ThE SOUtHErn CONFErENCE The Southern Conference, which enters its 87th season of intercollegiate competition in 2007, has become known as one of the nation’s leaders in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has excelled as the premier conference in the Football Championship Subdivision since earning that classification in 1981. The Conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Throughout its history, the Southern Conference has been an innovator in college athletics. The Southern Conference was the first “super conference” with its charter membership including the likes of Alabama, Auburn, and North Carolina. The SoCon, as it has come to be known by headline writers throughout the country, is the league that gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball and was the college home of such sporting greats as Arnold Palmer, Jerry West and Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes-Scholarship winners have been selected from the conference. The Southern Conference office is located in the Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, SC. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans four Southeastern states. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. The SoCon also sponsors two all-sports awards, the Commissioner's Cup for men's programs and the Germann Cup for women's teams. In 2006, Appalachian claimed its 27th Commissioner’s Cup since 1972 in addition to the Germann Cup for the eighth time in school history. Appalachian is the only SoCon program to win both cups in the same year, a feat it has accomplished seven times.

ASU ADMInIStrAtIOn

A member of the Appalachian State University community the past 23 years, Dr. Kenneth E. Peacock begins his fourth year as ASU’s sixth Chancellor in 2007-08. Dr. Peacock, who served as the University’s Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs during the 2003-04 academic year and was the Dean of Appalachian’s Walker College of Business from 1992-2003, assumed the office of Chancellor on July 1, 2004. During his 11-year tenure as Dean, Dr. Peacock introduced numerous initiatives that enhanced the college’s academic and financial stature. Among his many accomplishments as dean were securing a financial commitment from prominent businesswoman and civic leader Thelma C. Raley to name the building that currently houses the Walker College of Business and endowing a lecture series in honor of former State Treasurer Harlan E. Boyles. Dr. Peacock also developed an international program in partnership with Fudan University in Shanghai, China, to help students understand the challenges and opportunities of doing business in Asia. As the Walker College of Business Dean, he also established the Dean’s Council of Student Advisors and a Business Advisory Council, composed of 25 business leaders who meet once a semester to review programs and to anticipate the needs of the College. He guided the college to reaffirmation of accreditation by the Association to Advance College Schools of Business (AACSB International) in April, 1998. The AACSB’s Visitation Team awarded ASU’s Walker College of Business nine commendations of strengths and innovations during the reaffirmation. Chancellor Peacock arrived at Appalachian in 1983 as a faculty member in the Walker College of Business and began teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in accounting and taxation. He was promoted to Assistant Dean in 1987 and Associate Dean in 1989, before assuming the role of Dean in 1992. Prior to his arrival in Boone, he was a faculty member at the University of Virginia, from 1980-83, where he taught, primarily, taxation classes and served as faculty advisor for many student organizations. He also co-authored an Instructor’s Manual to accompany West’s Intermediate Accounting textbook and helped create an Investment and Tax Planning Seminar offered through UVA’s Division of Continuing Education. Upon receiving a B.S. in accounting from Mars Hill College in 1970, Chancellor Peacock worked for Price Waterhouse and Company in Winston-Salem and Charlotte, N.C., while teaching taxation classes on a part-time basis at Winston-Salem State University. In 1975, Dr. Peacock moved to Baton Rouge, La., where he earned Master’s (1977) and PhD. (1979) degrees in accounting from Louisiana State University. During his time at LSU, he helped develop a pair of training courses, funded and published by the Louisiana State Board of Regents for Higher Education, and taught throughout the state. An active member of the academic and local communities, Chancellor Peacock serves on the Boards of Directors of the Investment Advisory Committee for AACSB International, the Watauga Medical Center Foundation, and the Grandfather Home for Children. He is involved in numerous civic programs and activities. In 1995, Governor Jim Hunt appointed Peacock as one of just 25 North Carolinians to participate in the inaugural Leadership North Carolina program. Chancellor Peacock is married to the former Rosanne Barkley of Winston-Salem, N.C. They have two sons: Chris, 30, and Brian, 26.

Years one and two at Appalachian State University was an unparalleled success for director of athletics Charlie Cobb.Among the many successes enjoyed by Appalachian athletics during the first 24 months of Cobb’s tenure were:• Back-to-back NCAA Division 1 Football national championships - the first NCAA football titles ever won by a team from the state of North Carolina.• Shattering regular-season attendance records at “The Rock” with an average of 23,169 fans pilling into Kidd Brewer Stadium durring the regular season - 139.15 percent of the stadium’s seating capacity of 16,650. • Back-to-back Germann Cup Championships - given to the top women’s sports program in the Southern Conference• Back -to-back Commissioner’s Cup Championships – given to the top overall men’s sports program in the Southern Conference• 35 percent of the athletics department’s students making the Academic Honor Roll (minimum GPA of 3.25).• Four teams (men’s basketball, women’s cross country and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field) earning public recognition awards, based on being among the nation’s top 10 percent in their respective sports based on Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, with men’s basketball and women’s cross country earning the distinction in 2006 and ‘07.• The Yosef Club, which provides scholarships for student-athletes, reaching the $1 million threshold for each fiscal year — up over $400,000 from the year before Cobb’s arrival and marking the first time in the Yosef Club’s 35-year history that it reached the $1 million plateau. Additionally, Cobb has gotten the ball rolling on a $32 million athletics facilities enhancement plan. New state-of-the-art, on-campus facilities for ASU baseball and softball are already occupied and projects underway include renovations to Kidd Brewer Stadium, a 100,000-square foot athletics complex adjacent to KBS, and the university’s first indoor practice facility, which is slated for comletion in 2007. While Cobb is quick to point out the “total team effort” put forth to achieve the many successes that have been enjoyed since he began his tenure as ASU’s director of athletics on July 1, 2005, it is the experience, vision and work ethic of the 38-year-old Cobb steered the Mountaineers towards new heights. Prior to his arrival in Boone, Cobb was a member of the athletics department at North Carolina State University from 1998-2005. A four-year football letterwinner at NC State from 1987-90, Cobb served as the Wolfpack’s senior associate athletics director for external operations for the seven years prior to his arrival in Boone. In that role, he oversaw NC State’s marketing, ticket operations, media relations and student-athlete development operations, as well as serving on the department’s compact strategic planning initiative, gender equity and facilities committees. In addition, Cobb served as NC State’s administrator for baseball and women’s soccer, tournament manager for the 2004 NCAA men’s basketball first and second rounds at the RBC Center and the chair for the southeast region of the NCAA women’s soccer committee. Prior to returning to his alma mater in ‘98, Cobb spent five years in Atlanta, Ga., where he held positions with the Atlanta Sports Council, the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl and the Georgia Dome. Cobb earned a B.A. in business administration from NC State in 1990. A second-team all-ACC honoree at center as a senior, Cobb was an academic all-ACC selection and collected the prestigious Jim Tatum Award, presented to the ACC football senior with the highest grade point average, and the Bob Warren Memorial Award, given to the Wolfpack football player that displays the highest integrity and sportsmanship. After receiving post-graduate scholarships from both the ACC and NFL Charities, Cobb earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1992. Cobb is married to the former Lindsay Brecher, who was an all-ACC goalkeeper for NCSU women’s soccer from 1988-90 and serves as a volunteer assistant coach for Appalachian’s women’s soccer program. They have an nine-year-old son, Harrison, and a six-year-old daughter, Branan.
