I hope that you find the programs and activities outlined in this brochure exciting and interesting. We are examining the possibility of providing Theatre programming in co-operation with the Library and welcome your comments. Some of our ideas include classes for youth, teens, adults and seniors, a skit night and/or a major intergenerational production directed and produced by a professional team. We are also in the process of maintaining and replacing our park playground equipment. I believe that every day can be filled with fun by taking full advantage of our facilities and activities offered right here in our city.

Mayor’s MessageWhat an exciting time it is to live in Côte Saint-Luc! I anticipate that the new Aquatic and Community Centre on Parkhaven Avenue will be fully operational by September 2011. As a former competitive swimmer and water-polo player, I am thrilled that our residents will now have the opportunity to swim all year in 2 indoor pools (a competitive one and a recreational one) and join competitive teams and aquatic programs that Côte Saint-Luc will now be able to offer. The new facility will also house our seniors clubs and a multi-purpose room usable for many types of occasions, add an auxiliary library branch and a small fitness centre and offer programs for all age groups. See page 10 for a full description of the new facility.

In the mean time, there are still a lot of programs and activities going on at our existing facilities and parks. I encourage you to participate in as many programs and activities as you can and to get fit. Exercise is one of the secrets to a long and healthy life. I hope you have a great spring and summer and look forward to seeing you at our parks, ball fields, pools, tennis courts and other facilities.

heart in Motion Walking PathsThe City of Côte Saint-Luc, in partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Quebec, inaugurated a series of four urban walking paths in 2007. These walking paths are part of the international Heart in Motion program, which promotes physical activity as part of the global strategy of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Residents are welcome to borrow a pedometer from the Eleanor London Côte Saint-Luc Public Library to allow them to monitor their progress. All four paths start at Pierre Elliott Trudeau Park. Côte Saint-Luc is proud to be the first municipality on the island of Montreal to be part of this international initiative.

In 2011, the City of Côte Saint-Luc will install outdoor fitness areas in various parks across Côte Saint-Luc. These outdoor workout zones will offer residents a ‘fitness-centre’ style workout, with a variety of muscular and cardio-vascular stations. The equipment uses the user’s personal weight to create resistance, which will enable all of the adult population to benefit from the equipment.

The City will install in the the Green Gym line of outdoor fitness equipment at the following three locations in the spring of 2011:

• Richard Schwartz Park

• McDowell Park

• Adjacent to the Côte Saint-Luc Gymnasium and outdoor municipal pool

In each park, residents will find a mix of equipment to complete a full body workout. Users should read the health and safety warnings before using the equipment.

* NEW * Aquatic and Community CentreExcavation started in October 2010 at the site of the $18 million Côte Saint-Luc Aquatic and Community Centre located on Parkhaven Avenue, next to the current Côte Saint-Luc Gymnasium and outdoor swimming pool. Construction is ongoing and we are pleased with the process. We fully anticipate that the ACC will be fully operational in September 2011.

The ACC will include a 10-lane 25 metre competition pool, a recreational pool, meeting spaces and offices for our seniors’ programs, multipurpose rooms for meetings and banquets, a satellite public library, a dance studio, an art studio, an exercise room with physical fitness equipment, a games room, a youth drop-in room, a kids gymnasium room, a babysitting service for parents using the facility, a refreshment area, and an exterior terrace.

At the heart of the ACC’s aquatic component are the competition pool and recreation pool. The competition pool will allow Côte Saint-Luc to have a swim team, a masters team, a synchronized swimming team, a water polo team, and other activities such as free swim, swimming lessons, and bronze, leaders and national lifeguard programs. The recreational pool will provide games and fun for families, a beach area, swimming lessons for non-swimmers, aquasize classes and more.

The ACC is the most significant addition to our recreational facilities in a decade and will be a place for our entire community to enjoy year round for many years to come.
